Amazing! It's incredible what some people are able to overcome.

Ask yourselves what you can do to hire American workers, to support the American economy, and to invest in this nation.

President Obama needs to ask himself this question before asking anyone else. Investing in socialism (ie. the redistribution of wealth to favored political groups) is not an investment in America. It's an investment for a future like that of Cuba or Venezuela. Obama has spent the first two years of his presidency focusing on collectivism. History and common sense tells the business community that investing in a failed ideology isn't a good way to do business and create jobs. The best thing Obama could do for job creation is to repeal Obamacare. The economy would boom.

yabits: Not really. If there is spending to be undertaken -- say, as in starting a war -- liberals will favor increased taxes to pay for it. When you raise revenues along with spending, deficits tend to be less. Reagan and W. spent, spent, spent, but never wanted to raise taxes to pay for the spending.

And so you mean that President Obama has raised taxes to cover his spending? That's funny, he had the House and Senate with a fillabuster majority and he still didn't "pay" for his porkulous spending spree. What happened to Paygo? Well, that was just a gimmick.

But both presidents were handed an economy that was driven into a deep abyss by their predecessors.

Reagan was handed a horrible economy as well - you know, the worst since the Great Depression kind of economy. Ever heard of stagflation and 16% interest rates, high energy prices, and malaise? So your argument is that it's okay for a Democrat to run up huge debts in a bad economy but it's not okay for a Republican to run up a relatively much smaller debt during a economic crisis. At least Reagan got the end of the Cold War as a result of increased defense spending; which led to the so called "peace dividend" under Clinton. President Obama just got us in hoc to the Communist's in Beijing.

Oh, no complaint here. As a conservative, you simply fail to understand how we laugh when your leaders attempt to present themselves as somehow better able to manage the economy or the budget -- and then end up with the numbers that Reagan and W. did.

Yet Obama will have accomplished deficits in the trillions for every year of his first (and hopefully last) term. I agree that Bush II ran up some serious debt. That is why I am no longer a Republican - just a plain old conservative. Reagan's debt is peanuts compared to Bush and Obama. Liberals are still worse in economics because they view business as nothing more than a funding source for social programs. They think every American's money is theirs first and that they shall decide how much each person can keep of what they earn.

Yes they did. And for seven out of eight years under Reagan, the Congress passed budgets that contained less deficit spending than the budgets that were submitted to them from the White House.

So whose is responsible for the debt then? Congress of course. They have the power of the purse.

Why is it that you have this innate need to blame things on Democrats when it is so clear that the Republicans are every bit as horrible.

I agree that Republicans have been horrible with spending during the Bush years. How on earth could a huge social program like prescription drug benefits get passed under a president whom Liberals actually believe was a conservative? Compassionate conservativism was nothing less than Liberal light. Sure, Bush got 9/11 and the tech bubble that he inherited from the Clinton years. All of the Enron corruption also took place during the Clinton administration - she he inherited that as well.

I think that the excess of the Obama administration is proof that Liberals are much worse when it comes to economics. They have an internalized hatred of business and refuse to see people as individuals with individual rights. No one could ever imagine yearly budget deficits in the trillions year after year until Obama became president. Both parties have serious problems with money management. However, at least conservatives - and I mean actual conservatives - are trying to do something about it. Liberals seem to believe that the huge deficit is no big deal. It's just insane. There is a tipping point when it comes to deficits where it will be all the country can do to just keep up with the interest. Well, we are getting awfully close to it.

Palin: America out of step with Reagan's values

It's even worse than that, America is out of step with America's values.

yabits: That explains a lot. Especially why Palin foolishly believes that the era of Reagan and his tripling of government debt is something worth returning to.

So Liberals don't support huge spending and deficits? Then President Obama's huge deficits are sure to lead to a revolt and a primary challenge in 2012? Well, no. Because Liberals don't have a problem with deficits and debt or else they wouldn't be demanding more spending now. America will have a $1.5 trillion deficit under Obama just this coming fiscal year alone. I doubt Reagan totaled that much in two full terms.

I roll my eyes every time a Liberal/Progressive/Socialist complains about the deficit during Reagan's time as president. Democratic House Speaker Tip O'Neal went along with every one of Reagan's budgets. Democrats had a share of power during all of Reagan's presidency.

    What a cute bag!

The old 'double entendre'. Funny, but not really deserved. She is cute as well. She is just a little scrawny for a 19 year old woman. She looks as though she could almost fit her entire body into that bag.

President Obama is actually doing well so far. Early on Hillary was hedging her bets and backing Mubarak but they have been moving away and being more supportive of the peoples right to self-determination. As for Obama's speech in Cairo, his speech follows Condi Rice's speech six years ago calling for freedom in the Middle East. Obama needs to just keep himself from showing any support for a dictator like Mubarak - and then hope like hell that the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood doesn't somehow take power - that would be a disaster.

The federal government should reduce spending to the budgeted level in 2008 and freeze it there until the budget is balanced. I don't care if the cuts are across the board or if they are more in one department or another - the yearly large increases in spending must stop! We are to the point were the huge deficit and debts alone are causing the economy to stagnate. The interest on the US debt is $4 billion per day - that's insane!

I just came back to my apartment from class during my second year in college and saw the explosion on television. That day and 9/11 were both unforgettable because of the shock of the events. Reagan's speech was short and beautiful.

'Sputnik moment'? Obama has lost his mind. He is still talking about spending - it' going to be a long two years until the next election - assuming America is still around then.

I think most of the posters on this site will agree with Loughner's not guilty plea. After all, they all know that either Rush, Palin, Beck, or some vast right wing conspiracy did the crime. You saw the black helicopters flying away during CNN's wall-to-wall coverage of the event didn't you?

I have no doubt that Emanuel will figure out how to beat the courts decision. This is Chicago after all. Surely he can get Obama to give some guy a big job in the Federal government somewhere to let his buddy be crowned Mayor.

Yeah and hundreds of thousands of people wouldn't have met a hideous death sarge. The Americans, petceived by many as causing today's problems, and The Occupier, are the problem, they need to leave.

It will not be much longer before America will not be able to be the worlds policemen anymore. At that point, does anyone think the world will be a better place? It also won't be too much longer before China takes on the policeman's role. Then they will be asking, where are the Americans? The Left will soon have it's wish of a bankrupted and inward looking America. We know from history that the "hideous death" can get much worse.

Now that the initial rush by the American news media to turn this tragedy into an anti-conservative story is over, it is clear that Loughner was not influenced by the rough and tumble of American political debate but by the deteriorating state of his own mental health. Even partisans such as President Obama himself understands this.

It is ironic that the blame-game started by Paul Krugman just a few hours after the shooting and quickly followed by many other irresponsible media figures has resulted in a huge increase in the number of death threats against Tea Party members, Palin and others that were unjustly implicated by them. Will they now blame themselves for Fullers' in person death threat? Well, of course not. Nor will we see much hay being made of this particular event either.

I don't believe that Fuller actually wanted to kill Humphries - although given the circumstances the precaution of temporarily detaining him is understandable. He was obviously deeply affected and upset by what happened to him and the others that were victimized by Loughner. It was definitely a mistake to allow him to participate in Amanpour's program. I have always disliked the fact that the media is always trying to put a microphone in front of people that have just been traumatized by a crime or tragedy. It is the worst kind of journalism because it prey's on the raw emotions of victims in order to generate a type of story that will help some journalists career and get high ratings for their particular media outlet. With the media pinning the blame (in this case unjustifiably) on some person or group it is easy to understand why the victims would lash out like this.

One thing we seem to be forgetting in trying to blame either the left or the right, we need to look at the person himself.

Yeah, but if we do that how can we make ourselves feel superior to those that disagree with us and discredit their motives as evil and dangerous? I mean, isn't the the point of many of the previous 200+ comments?

I'm sensing both you guys on the right and left want this guy to be one of the other.... what do you gain by that?

That's just the way politics is these days - seize the moral high ground and seek to discredit your opponents as extremists. Quite frankly, the Left are experts at this. They have been branding their political opponents as racists, sexist, greedy, and hate-mongers for decades all for the purposes of changing the subject from defending an ideology that looks good on paper but always fails when put into practice. The media then pick up on the Lefts attacks and turn a tragic crime perpetrated by a lunatic into a political weapon.

Why do they do it? Well, it works! Watch the news over the next several weeks and months and see it unfold - happens every time.

What the hell is with all the people on this page blaming this on leftists? Why would leftists attack leftists?

This guy lists Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto among his favorite books and also criticizes the US Constitution. Sounds like a Lefty to me. Or perhaps he is just a mad man...
