It's the Republicans that have been pushing Reid's remark as a wedge issue, not the Democrats.

Republicans are only holding Democrats to the standards in which they themselves set for others. Can anyone seriously doubt that if Senator McConnell had said the same thing that Senator Reid said that Democrats would be likening him to Lott and demanding him to resign? Come on - does anyone doubt that one bit? Of course not, because that is what Democrats always do when an oppoinent makes a politically incorrect statement.

If you ever want to be taken seriously in any discussion regarding American politics here, you have to be willing to acknowledge that the current Republican Party IS the Democratic Party of the Reconstruction Era -- more specifically, Southern Democrats.

Wow, what a simplistic and historically inaccurate argument. Once slavery was ended and major civil rights laws passed due in large part to the Republican party, racist politicians lost their home in any political party. Racists Democrats left the Democrat party because it had swung from the party of Jim Crowe laws to the exact opposite - the party of Jesse Jackson affirmative action laws. Republicans have always and continue to believe that each person should be treated as individuals that are equal in the eyes of the government. Those racist Democrats could either remain Democrats (like Senator Byrd and George Wallace) go to the Dixiecrats (Strom Thurmond), move to the only other party and fight against affirmative action, or just get out of politics altogether.

If the Republican party was just the party of former racist southern Democrats then their would not have been any Republican presidents since the 1960's and no signficant numbers of Republicans in Congress. This of course has not been the case. Republicans maintain significant support outside of the south particularly in the southwest and in the middle part of the country. Surprisingly, the next Senator from Massachusettes may even be a Republican - or will come close to it.

LFRAgain - if YOU ever want to be taken seriously in any discussion about American politics here, you have to be willing to acknowledge that politics isn't as simplistic as you make it out to be and that the Democrat party has been responsible for supporting a great deal of the racist attitudes the have existed in American society. In fact, the Democrat parties support of affirmative action and other policies that refuse to treat people of every color as individuals and not as members of a political interest group to be given preferential treatment are the single most disruptive force in American race relations today.

The republicans do want to return, as Trent Lot said, to a time when blacks were slaves and were kept in their proper place. Where women stayed at home to clean. Where only landowners voted. That is what they all want to go back to, like climbing back into the womb. The real world is just too confusing for them. Hence their support for idiots who tell them its all right, like Palin is playing now.

OK, are you are trying to say that Republican's want women to stay at home and clean but they also support Sarah Palin's political career? I guess you haven't noticed that your understanding of Republicans is a bit contradictory.

A Republican president ended slavery - and it is one of the party's greatest achievements. One would have to be a hyper-partisan to believe that a party with such a background would want to re-impose slavery - that's just idiotic and nonsensical. My observation has been that Republicans have always wanted a color blind society and not one based on divisive public policy based on racial categorization. It is no surprise that large majorities of blacks support the Democrat party in the years since the Civil Rights era when Democrats have done a 180 and have committed to using race to give them an advantage. It's also no surprise that a white fire fighter might be angered when his race is used to deny him a promotion.

At the end of the day, if one were to tally up everything that either party has done to improve the lot for millions of African-Americans (and other minorities), Republicans would be found sorely lacking in both effort and inclination nine times out of ten.

I am not a Republican myself (I am an independent Conservative) but the truth of the matter is, the Republican party ended slavery. The Democrat party is the home of the KKK, fillibusters against civil rights legislation, and Governors standing in school house doors. Regardless of how blacks align themselves today, you can't change history. Whatever affirmative action Liberals have been able to achieve since the 1960's via a racial spoils system sort of pales in comparision.

Republicans have generally been the color-blind party and the Democrats have been the color-conscious party. Before the 60's, they were the party of Jim Crow; after losing politically they swung completely in the opposite direction to become the party of race-based solutions to all problems. The Demcrat party's obsession with race - which is part of their political power base - is the biggest obstacle to race relations in America today. Race is part of their political playbook and they use it constantly to attack their political opponents. It is shameful but the sad reality of modern times.

I can assure readers that any superiority I might feel is simply a by-product of what occurs when those of average intelligence are pitted against ignorant and narrow-minded bigots.

I agree with you completely. I just wish the Democrat party and Liberals in general would stop showing how ignorant they are by constantly using race as a wedge issue and by getting over their race-centric view of the world. Otherwise, they will continue to be called out as hypocrites when one of their own gets caught saying something politically incorrect. People can't go around branding their political opponents as racist when their own party is obsessed with race.

If Senator McConnell had said the exact same thing that Senator Reid did, the Dems and the media would brank him a racist and would be out for his head. However, for Reid it's no big deal. It is so obviously a double standard there really is not much of a debate about that.

Liberals will always hate strong women who don't think the way they want them to. On top of that, she is relatively good looking and those manly Lib women can't stand that.

When I watched the film it was obvious to me that this was one of those 'white people bad, indigenous people good' kind of movie. As if no indigenous peoples ever dominated other indigenous people. This is a tried and true formula for Liberal Hollywood. Any movie that pits one race against another it will always be the whites that wear the black hats - that is just the way it is. Given all that and ignoring the race dimension, it was a good movie with outstanding special effects. I enjoyed it.

That is incorrect. Duke, like Strom Thurmond before him, changed parties from Democrat to Republican and won elective office for the first time in 1989 as a Republican to the Louisiana House of Representatives.

My apologies, you are right on that account. I find it pretty sad that Duke could get elected anywhere - pretty disturbing. It is rather more astounding how a minority Republican could be elected Governor by that same state party (Gov. Jindal). Yet even today Democrat Senator Byrd still serves in the US Senate.

Byrd was never a grand wizard

Right again - but he was an 'Exalted Cyclops' which is second in command to the grand wizard. Either way it's not much of a difference in my book and hardly worth quibbling about.

That's because the nature of the remarks are vastly different. Saying that America would have been better off if an arch-segregationist had won the highest office in the land is different from acknowledging that there is a difference to non-blacks between "black English" and "standard English."

Of course the comments made by Reid and Lott are not exactly equivalent. The issue is that both men apologized and Lott even went on BET television to made sure that everyone knew that he didn't mean to infer that he supports segregation. As far as I know, Lott has never supported the goals of segregation or even sponsored any segregationist of discrimintory policies at any level politically. If it turns out that I am wrong then I would be glad to see the evidence and change my opinion. Lott has been just the opposite and has always pursued public policy in a color blind fashion.

Reid's comment was worse than just the "negro" comment which he assumed was made off the record - makes one wonder what other racial comments the man says "off the record". Reid stated that he thought the lighter skinned Obama was more acceptable. By any Liberal standard, Senator Reid is a racist. Oh, except he is a Democrat so the media will give him a pass.

Face it Liberals, had any Republican made the exact same comments they would be called a racist and the media would be hounding them relentlessly. The Democrat party uses race for political purposes and no level of hypocrisy will keep them from using this wedge issue to achieve political power.

LOL! Two whole decades, huh? You later bring up Senator Byrd to try to make a point -- omitting the fact that Byrd cut his ties to a racist organization over a half-century ago.

Yes, and Thurmond cut his ties with his segregationist past as well. Thanks for helping me make my point.

Since the single reason why Thurmond and other white segregationists broke with the Democratic Party and formed the Dixicrats was their opposition to the Democrats' push for civil rights and integration -- as exemplified by Truman's integration of the armed services -- anyone claiming that Lott is not saying what he clearly said is either daft or dishonest.

Again, Lott was just humouring a 100 year old man on his birthday. Yes, everyone knows that Thurmond was a segregationist (as was Senator Byrd) and that what Lott said was stupid. Lott himself believes what he said was stupid. My point is that Lott was not given the benefit of the doubt while Reid was. Lott is not racist and has never advocated discrimination in government policy; yet Liberals and the media want to insist that he is. By the way, Civil Rights only passed because it received more Republican support than Democrat support in Congress.

Interesting to note that Thurmond the segregationist soon found a happy home in the party that David Duke later chose as his own: the Republicans.

Duke was rejected by the Republican party and did not hold any office as a Republican. However, only nine years ago (and not 50) Senator Byrd used the 'N-word' on national television. Republicans and Democrats can't prevent racists from claiming they are members of their party but they can prevent them from holding office as representatives of their party. The fact remains, Byrd was an actual grand wizard of the KKK - and that doesn't seem to bother Democrats in the least. Unbelievable hypocrisy - much more so than even Senator Reid's case.

Senator Reid's comments and the reaction towards them are par for the course in todays' partisan political culture. President Obama gives him a pass because he is a Democrat. If Senator McConnell had said the exact same thing Obama would not have been so gracious and the media would have compared him to Senator Lott. The media will bring it up but Reid won't be dogged by it in the way that Lott was. Not only did Reid use the term "Negro" but he also focused on the racist stereotypes of light-skin color and that he uses a "Negro dialect" when he wants to. His comments were 'insensitive' on several different levels.

Neither Reid or Lott are racists. Neither of them attended a segregationist or racist church for two decades. Senator Lott was obviously not saying that the nation would have been better off if a segregationist had become president; and when asked directly he has stated so. He was just trying to flatter an old man on his birthday. He admitted that it was a dumb thing to say and wasn't thought through. There was simply a jump to the conclusion that Lott is a Republican so obviously he meant his statement to be racist. In other words, Lott isn't a human being but a person of a certain group that should be treated differently. This is how the Democrats use race to keep blacks voting for them by manipulating their emotions and fears. This is what leads to branding blacks such as Justice Thomas, Secretary Rice, and Chairman Steele as Uncle Toms or house negros - or worse.

The most prominent politician with a racist background in Americn politics today is Senator Byrd, a Democrat. Byrd's background as an admitted Grand Wizard of the KKK is much more insidious then say, Senator Helms, yet Byrd is an acceptable Democrat that the party embraces as one of their own. In fact, it wasn't that long ago that Byrd used the verbotten "N-word". Contrast this to Helms who was labeled a racist by the Democrat party and the media. Helms didn't support segregation in the post Civil Rights era. He changed just as Byrd changed yet as a Republican he was assumed to be a racist. Until Liberals learn to accept that the world has changed the country will continue to be 'cowards' when it comes to talking about race.

If Senator Reid is ultimately damaged by his insensitive remarks about blacks then I would chalk it up to karma equalizing things out a bit.

Generally speaking, the more maneuverable boat is responsible for avoiding a collision at sea. In addition, the Ady Gil put itself in the position for the collision. Who can say if the Japanese ship didn't actually try somewhat to hit the smaller boat; but the the harrassing boat is ultimately responsible in my opinion. Groups like Green Peace and the Sea Shepard Conservation Society try to act as though they are some law enforcement organization - they are not.
