I strongly object to the previous two posts, which are uninformed and unfair. I've been watching (and understanding) these August series for several decades and I think their message is unambiguous. Don't confuse NHK with the Ministry of Education. These TV documentarians don't pull any punches. The details of Unit 731, mistreatment of POWs, etc. have all been introduced and I never sensed any attempt to justify or cover up Japan's wartime activities.

My sentiments entirely. There's something pathetic about people who can't even put down their mobile devices long enough to enjoy watching a football game.

This is a bribe too, in a way. The money goes into a police slush fund instead of the public coffers. There have been numerous exposes in the media about how the police put the squeeze on citizens, including parking violations and traffic violations.

Thanks for the Fox News broadcast@sailwind. Wishful thinking should carry you through the last week of October, 2012. Which color necktie are you planning to wear to Obama's Inaugural Ball, by the way?

The Tea Party's school bully approach to governance is so lowbrow and unappealing I don't give the GOP very good odds. Their candidates now have 17 months in which to alienate voters by getting caught philandering, embezzling, and putting their foot in their mouth with a goofy or racist statement. Let the "process of elimination" begin.

I would have paid if Johnny Kitagawa himself had been present. He's about as elusive as Elvis and Bigfoot.

Several of my mail correspondents have remarked that Japanese have been much more subdued in the wake of this disaster than the one in 1923 -- when the government circulated rumors of arson by Koreans that led to lynchings of several thousand people. And the usually inflammatory Governor Ishihara has had the good sense to keep his mouth shut -- so far.

Four more years of government gridlock. The good news is there are still lots of countries in the Mideast that the US hasn't started bombing yet. Which one will be next?

I'd be willing to chip in for a round-trip ticket to Florida, if the Afghan promises only to flick his BIC at Terry Jones and then leave the country right away.

Considering the magnitude of that quake, I'm amazed that anything is still standing up there.

I would add that these things tend to be carefully staged and the young men would have received instructions on what was expected of them in advance.

The key protocol is that the Emperor's head be higher than his subjects. This is being observed. They're allowed to sit in that position because they are "victims" (no disrespect intended) and are thereby excused from putting on swallowtail morning coats.

The problem with this post hoc rationalization is that the loss of three such people doesn't represent a significant reduction in their still-living comrades, the exploits of which I'm fairly certain we'll be reading more about, soon, on JT.

As far as I'm concerned, they should concentrate on saving power by cutting back on the broadcasts. Until the semifinals it's almost always the same schools anyway -- with the teams made up of semiprofessional high school players from PL Gakuen and the like.

Although the fatalities were far fewer than northern Japan, the sad fact is that coastal areas of Chiba and Ibaraki also suffered considerable damage on March 11.

The salaries from those 6,000 workers go to pay off home mortgages and apartment rents, patronize restaurants, shop in supermarkets, etc. so all of these things will set off economic "aftershocks." We won't know the results for weeks or months, but years. After keeping the business going for 15 years from 1995, my friend's struggling restaurant in Kobe finally went under. He tried to keep it going, but the town's economic base never recovered. Now he's being sued by the people who lent him money to keep it afloat. One thing we can depend on -- the lawyers always get to come feast on the carrion.
