I am sorry for the lengthy post. This is due to the dramatic events.
Let us recall the main facts. I do not pretend to be an expert in Korean history, but here is the picture as I understand it:
1) Korea was under Japanese occupation between 1905 and 1945. A very nasty occupation.
2) Korea should have been freed when WWII ended. Naturally, there were various domestic political forces, on a full spectrum ranging from the far left to the far right. The Koreans were looking for their way to establish their own governance.
3) America did not heed the will of the Koreans to find their own path, and invaded to the southern part.
4) As a result, Korea was split between two states, one capitalist at the south and one socialist at the north.
5) A war broke out in 1950 and continued till 1953. America claims that the north attacked the south. The north claims that America provoked the war intentionally. Most victims, about 4,000,000 were in the north, which was flattened by the war.
6) In the period that followed there were bad times and good times. It even happened once that the north and south marched together at the opening of the Olympic Games. There was an interval during which the south was ruled by a fascist dictatorship, and there were other intervals during which the south was governed by leaders who pursued unification processes with the north.
7) There were diplomatic contacts between the north and America during the term of Bill Clinton. But no agreement was finalized because of the objection of the Congress.
8) The neoconservative George W. Bush came to power after Bill Clinton. He wanted a regime change in the north, and was considering a military attack.
9) Nevertheless, the six party talks were opened. The aim of the talks was to denuclearize the peninsula, and to assure the safety and sovereignty of both the south and the north.
10) Japan made a mockery of the talks, and they did not converge. Meanwhile the north continued to advance its nuclear armament.
11) After Bush's term ended, Barack Obama came to power in America. His philosophy, as far as foreign affairs are concerned, is that regimes that do not comply with American standards should be removed. In this sense he is very similar to Bush, but he as been advancing this policy using much more sophisticated methods.
12) Obama made it clear that he is going to press the north until the regime collapses. One manifestation was the provocative military maneuvers near the border, as well as terrorizing the north with the most advanced and mighty weapons. Another manifestation is the crippling sanctions, and the prohibition on developing satellite technology.
13) As a result of Obama's policy, the north now reacts again as someone who is pushed to the corner, and does not have much to loose.

Tamarama, you said it honestly and plain. But Obama has not said it plain yet, and is continuing to fool the world. Obama owes the truth about his agenda especially to John Kerry: It is not decent to employ a senior person (who bears a responsibility) in your team and deceive him, as W did to Colin Powell.

Obama's agenda is not defending the South: This would not have entailed so much fuss and mayhem. The real agenda is changing the regime in the North. Kim Jong-Un understands that Barack Obama is preparing for him the same fate that he prepared for Moammar Gadhafi and for Bashar Al-Assad, so he reacts accordingly.

The aim of this treaty is not to prevent war. Rather, its aim is to enable America to distribute arms freely, and at the same time to prevent America's rivals from arming themselves.

"Part of me wishes they would just attack and free the poor people living in the world's most ridiculous society ever" (bgaudry).
Ineed, America's agenda is a regime change in North Korea. The agenda is not defending the south -- this would not have entailed such a conflict. There is also a secondary agenda: Showing off all the military toys that have been developed, thereby demonstrating greatness and might, and justifying further expenses for arms development.

Tens of posts so far, digging and assessing the situation from every angle, except one: The idea of stopping the American provocations. The idea of leaving the peninsula, returning to where America belongs at the other side of the great ocean and allowing the Koreans at the south and at the north to coexist peacefully, without provocations and with mutual respect to each other's way of life. Dropping the agenda of annihilating NK. This simple idea has not occurred to anybody save Jim Poushinsky.

The cunning but very devoted servant in charge of the empire crosses the ocean and visits the most active edge of the empire:
"How about Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Jordan? Our monarchs are fine, nobody call them despots. Check mark. How about Iraq? It ours now, thanks to the man who preceded me. Killing 1,500.000 natives directly by our forces is not my style, but never mind. Check mark. How about Yemen? Overall it is ok, but I have to eliminate some undesirable elements there using my drones. Check mark. How about Libya? It is also ours now, thanks to the Europeans who did their job. Check mark. How about Egypt? The 80-million-strong nation has no economy. They completely depend on handouts from our empire. Check mark. How about Syria? Well, I said that the president is a despot, and the whole world seconded. I am now removing this despot using the same type of people that kill in Yemen; I will kill and cull them too, afterwards."
"And now I arrive to the cherry on top of the Middle East cake. The Palestinians are quickly being replaced by our settlers. What a joy it is to hug and kiss these dear brave pioneers of the Wild East! The Palestinians? They will soon be extinct and forgotten."

The life of Hugo Chavez was not motivated by chasing wealth or pleasures. His motivation was to emancipate the oppressed and underprivileged people, the working people. To emancipate Latin America and the world. And he gave his life, like other martyrs who were either directly murdered by evil-makers or spent their vigor till the last drop and died prematurely. The pantheon of martyr leaders from Latin America and around the world who fought for making the world a better place, and/or for emancipating their countries, includes such personas as Ernesto (Che) Guevara, Rosa Luxemburg, Karl Liebknecht and James Connolly. In this era of rotting of capitalism, which exhibits its brutality and stupidity ever more, these and other leaders sought a way of saving mankind and this planet. They will be remembered for eternity, and Hugo Chavez is one of them.

Madverts, thank you for your elaborate post. One of the things you said is
Well, the point is that Hugo Chavez has helped many people to get better education. Some information about this can be found in the website venezuelanalysis.com. You would disagree with this website, but if you look at the list of authors you will see that these are serious people (though with views different from yours). By the way, it was not me who thumbed down your last post: It turns out that this thread is still being read, and someone apart of me has thought that you were wrong.

Madverts, the website of the Criminal Justice International Associates,
http://www.cjiausa.org
does not appear like that of a serious and credible firm or institution. Accusations can be made, but accusations are not facts. Comparing between Hugo Chavez and Winston Churchill, the worth of the former is million times greater than that of the latter. No, I do not refer to personal assets but to contribution to mankind.

The source that you cite is a small article in nbclatino.com from May 2012, which speaks about Latinos included in Forbes list of powerful people. The article says that there are five, with the late Hugo Chavez being the 48th in the list. That is all. No more details are given, except for the following sentence: "While he won a fourth term and six more years to develop some of the world's largest proven oil reserves, Chavez also continues to fight pelvic cancer".

Korea is a small country bordering with China, situated between China and Japan. It is an ancient country, whose culture has been strongly influenced by China over the millennia, but it has also struggled for its independence and identity. Presently, half of its territory is occupied by America. The other half is independent, but America works relentlessly and obsessively to occupy the independent half as well since 1945. For this sake, America is even willing to annihilate the entire population of this half of Korea (about 22 millions). It is not dignified for China to collaborate with America in this. The three countries of East Asia, namely China, Korea and Japan (or four states - China, ROK, DPRK and Japan) are a family of nations with some common heritage, even though they also have some diversity, in particular relating to social/economic system, and some disputes. In this family China is the big sister, or perhaps the mother. Collaborating with a remote monstrosity that wants to annihilate one of the sisters in the neighborhood? That is not dignified.

After the disappointment of the DPJ episode, the people have returned to Shinzo Abe and clung to him as a savior. But how will they react when Abenomics proves to be a flop? Indeed, it is bound to fail, because it is too simplistic. The economy is not a balloon that can simply be inflated. Will people begin to realize that capitalism is not a system that can sustain society forever?
