In all likelihood, he probably didn't even know. Japanese women are very resilient about expressing their true feelings and she probably hid this from him. As for 'romance' - once you're married with kids, forget it, they ain't interested in romance. And how could she have been 'lonely, missed her family'??? You make no sense with that statement!

I recently talked about this with some Japanese friends and they said it's true, that Japanese see more value in death than in living. And if you're ill...forget it! Does anyone remember the story on JT about six years ago, where a man lay dying of a heart attack, and his stone cold wife just stood there looking at him before deciding to take the dog for a walk! He survived after calling an ambulance for himself and divorced that sad b**ch! Last week, I was seriously ill and only for the 2nd time in my nine year stay in Japan. But again, my Japanese wife was very cold towards me, even though I still went to work during my illness.
This country needs a damn good kick up the rear when it comes to community, social care and being there for others. I don't claim to know what this woman went through, but my guess is that her 7 year old especially, must have been petrified! The woman would have my sympathy if she hadn't been such a selfish person and taken two innocent lives with her. My prayers go out to her husband who now has to live with this for the rest of his life...something else his wife never gave thought to.
Also, isn't it amazing how people give a lot of thought and effort to killing themselves instead of picking up the phone and calling someone for support?

This is interesting. And I wonder where it'll end up. Because the dinosaur 'skeletons' you see in most big museums are plastic or plaster fakes. (Bill Bryson - A Brief History of Nearly Everything)

Nine years in Japan, with a wife and kid, Japanese, and I am so sick to death of the ESL field! I can't get a decent job just because I am a gaijin AND I live in the sticks to boot. I am applying for jobs in the USA, Canada and UK, but so far, nothing. Why? Now over 40 and wasted nine years of my working life (NOT my life in Japan, just my career), teaching English to people who are lazy, put too much thought into what you're saying, and simply do not and never will - get it! I have perhaps, if I'm fortunate, one last chance at changing my career here or anywhere, otherwise I'm doomed to the ESL field forever. With that thought in mind, I see how easily it would be to just give up on life.

Last week my manager asked me to wear a tie, I refused, quoting that it's the Cool Biz season, and if the Prime Minister doesn't wear one, neither should I. She didn't argue the case. I was also asked to shave off my goatee. My reply was, if she shaved hers off first, THEN I'd shave mine off!
Strangely enough, I haven't seen her all week.

As to the strap issue, that can be easily remedied, methinks, so teenages can put the giant mass of kitsch on it and be unable to fit it in their bags. Not to worry.

Can anyone with an iPhone 3G PLEASE give us more information about the charges? I am thinking to get one, but I'm hearing different things about the charges, that you have to have one thing and can't have another etc.
Please, only those that own the 3G model since last week, give us some idea!

The iPhone supplier is Softbank.
I went there again today to clear up a few misunderstandings about their charges. In the International Information booklet, written in several languages, the only part of it that is confusing, is not the Korean, Chinese or French pages, but the pages that give information about charges.
On the one page it says that a maximum ¥4,140 will be charged for UNLIMITED emails and web use. What it DOESN'T say is that that charge is ONLY for some of Softbank's other phones. The iPhone is NOT included.
The iPhone has unlimited web service for around ¥5300 per month!
All in all, a total charge for their Double White Plan, (making calls cheaper), unlimited web and email use, and monthly payments for the phone itself, amounts to around ¥9700 ($95) per month.
Not too shabby if you can stick to using it just for the web and emails, and don't make too many calls. My concern lies in that, so far, every single phone service provider I've been through here in Japan, gives you the monthly quote for a service, but when the bill comes, it is more than double what you think you're going to have to pay. I went home to the UK in January and my bill for that month was STILL over ¥14000 for that month!
I would really like to hear from ANYONE who has the new iPhone3G here in Japan, and just what plan you signed up for, how the service is so far, etc.
Alternatively, this site is a great source for more info about the new iPhone3G:
