Well, an update:
The same store where I saw the display model yesterday, kindly gave me a magazine with all English explanations about charges, billing etc, as well as what they require to buy one (registration card, inkan, resident status etc). They were more than helpful and the assistant that helped me gave me her phone number too - so phone or not, my weekend is sorted!!
Anyway, it gets even better!
While one store told me that I would have to pay ¥34,560 just for the phone, PLUS the monthly charges at ¥6,300 per month PLUS any additional charges, taxes, etc, etc, etc.... ...the other store (where my date for Saturday night works) is offering the iPhone3G for 0円!! The plan includes all charges and the 円80,000 (86k with tax) at a rate of just 円3,590 per month! So, while I initially said I was going to wait, I might have to reconsider, because this deal is just too sweet to pass up on. Besides, an unlocked iPhone3G sells for well over $1400 in some cases on eBay!
And the internet is now awash with thousands of new videos showing the capability of the new model iPhone! Could this be the phone to end all phones? I doubt it, but it's certainly putting a very large dent in the offerings of other phones!

Looking forward to Saturday!

I've been to several stores in my area looking for this thing and only ONE Softbank store has an actual model on display, that you can pick up and examine the functions.
ONE STORE out of 5 that I went to.
If Apple is hoping to sell ten million of these before the end of the year, then they had best start shipping them to other carriers instead of just Softbank.
If they give this to AU to sell, then I'll be happy to have one, but I'm not changing carriers just to have this phone.

These phones are easy to hack and worth waiting for either the Black Market to catch up or for AU to get their finger out and start offering this phone in its lineup. When they do, I'll get one. (Preferably via the latter means). I ain't signing up to Softbank just to get one of these, Softbank ain't worth it!

And another thing....how the hell can Softbank sell the iPhone for ¥80,000 when Job's has stated clearly that it is only $299!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Save your money and stay away from $oftbank!

Movieguy - I couldn't agree more!
My friend Tony got iPhone today, but in the store he said his wife was practically handed hers immediately, while he had to go through a procedure that even Narita Airport Customs officials would be proud of!
Screw Softbank and their lousy overpriced service, just get one off ebay and save a tonne of money! (initially at least)

I hate Softbank with a passion. I really do. They are rude and downright liars about every aspect of their service. Any company that has gone through as many changes as they have in the past 9 years, should have the word 'DODGY' preceding their company name.
One can only hope that the other phone communications companies catch up and get signed onto providing the iPhone.

Well, let's look at the facts here first shall we. There were more police officers arrested or dismissed in the first half of this year for petty crimes, than have been in the previous five years altogether. Perhaps this accounts for the drop of 5%? Either that or cops are finding it harder to catch the elite and highly dangerous bicycle thief!

I went to Softbank yesterday and asked to see their display model. I might as well have said "My cat drives a carrot!" No display, no model phone and I was told to "Be patient, it will be here at 8AM."
When I asked to see one, knowing they must have had them in the store somewhere at 5PM with launch day just around the corner, I was given a pathetic looking flyer with a picture of the iPhone 3G on it, and a piece of paper with ¥33,640 yen on it and a monthly quote of over ¥6,300 yen underneath that.
There were no queues there this morning (and it's the biggest Softbank store in my city) and at the price they're asking, I think I'll just wait until someone gets bored or confused with it, and sells it to a recycle shop. Then just buy the unlock program for it.

I worked for a German company here in Japan last year, and the president of the company came over here, and couldn't understand how Japanese work so many hours and achieve less results. And he had a valid point. I watched Japanese staff members run around like headless chickens in the company, and yet, most of the time they were doing nothing but having meetings about meetings! I felt sorry for the guys who only saw their kids twice a year - Golden Week and Obon - and their families. The sick thing is, Japanese people really believe you have to be a hard worker for the company to be worth anything in society. The other sick thing is - they work for a salary that in the USA and UK for example, was made illegal years ago. Who in their right mind is going to sit in an office all day for $7 an hour?
Japanese working conditions are an abomination to the rights of men and women alike. And while the senior authority figures at the top have the power to change things, they don't, simply because they lack the conscience of guilt when they make their subordinates work hard to fatten their pockets!

I am considering a move back to Softbank now that they've got rid of Vodafone and partly because AU is ripping me off!
Looking at the new iphone 3G as an option too.

The biggest mistake is simply having greater expectations that the first date will lead somewhere else that night...ie, the sack! Treat your date like you would a cherished family member and ALWAYS ALWAYS be YOURSELF!! Because if things do work out between you, and you later stop being the person you were on your first date, there's a very likely chance that you'll head for a break up sooner or later.
Just relax, have fun and don't thing you're getting your leg over that night! (This goes for women too!)
If however, you're both looking for nothing more than a quick one nighter, then forget about the drinks and dinner, okay, maybe a few drinks might help, hit the covenie and get a packet of 3 and enjoy!

Ooh, I know, How about changing the skirts for something more appropriate? With some of the girls at schools these days, they look more like glamor models!! It's hard to resist staring at some of them, after all, they do look amazingly beautiful...BUT, personally I do not go further than admiring their beauty. This sick dude obviously did and would have done well to get himself a woman!

Which bright spark said the iPhone is not 'technologically superior' to Japanese phones?
Yusuke, you win the "Dipstick of the day" award!
The iPhone is WAY more advanced than the average Japanese cell phone! I paid more for my AU phone than the iPhone is priced at, but the only websites I can view are crappy Japanese ones!
I'm not going to bother buying an iPhone when they come out, as it's easier just to wait and buy it from the recycle store after someone gets bored with it after two months (like they did with my current laptop, valued at $2600, I got it for $1400 and it was only 7 weeks old!). Then, I'll just use one of the easily affordable unlock programs available on the web, and use my current pin card in it. (And yes, it will work)
There's some good videos and information about the iPhone and the new 3G model here: http://www.inyouriphone.com
