USNinJapan2 and others, so the people of Okinawa should do what they are told by their "betters"? This is my main point of objection, that the Americans and Japanese know what is best for the Okinawa "children".
David Chiang, I understand America better than a lot of Americans. Unlike America where people rent land, Okinawa has a history of land staying in families for hundreds perhaps thousands of years. The land my family had has been passed down though the ages. It is a source of our identity and a source of comfort. next time you fly though Narita check out that little farm close to what should be the crosswind runway. In America the government takes away land only to give it to a businessperson to make a mall or whatever. Land rights are not in the US Constitution unlike Japan. America also has been settled by the European settlers and others for only a short period of time. The vast majority for less than 200 years, so there is no deep connection to the land.

Yubaru, well my brother wants to be a farmer. Our land is not being used by the Americans. We do not want to rent our land. The amount of rent he gets stinks.

Yubaru, I never knew the security of growing up on our family farm. My parents worked hard to put food on the table. We were forced to live under the flight path to Futenma, there was no place else to go. My brother inherited because he is a boy. The Americans paid no rent from 1945 to 1972, nothing. When I was a kid a lot Americans told me "you will be a good prostitute one day". So today I hear "how dare you have the nerve to disagree with your betters". I use to watch the American planes and dream of a better life. I was able to achieve it and unlike my brother speak passable English. Against all odds I meet my old love from college again. Now I live a new life.

sfjp330, the problem is Japan did not let the sovereign prefecture of Japan have any input. Just think what would happen if the USA made and agreement with another country leasing land to them. Then make it a state in which the majority population has been oppressed by the majority in the country. It would never happen. So why does America assume the Japanese majority has the right to oppress the Okinawa minority? I blame Tokyo for this problem being the empowers of the USA to have the bases. If they would not give their obedient consent it would never happen. The Governor of Okinawa will not sign the construction permit. He is not obligated to sign that permit. We are not slaves to Tokyo.
Yubaru, The USA needs to pay my brother for the farm they destroyed. My family suffered because of what they did. I suffered because of what the Americans did to me and my family. My families land could be released now. It is on the east side of the runway and the offices and barracks could be relocated to Camp Foster quickly. It is not even a 15 minute drive. It is not done because the Americans have zero flexibility. Look at google map and tell me how much land they really need, also why they need to use it for fix wing.

The Truth Matters, you need to come back and visit Okinawa sometime. As I always say it is not an anti-American thing or really an anti-military thing. Some people make it seem like the American bases are besieged and nothing could be further from the truth. I do not blame the Governor and Mayor being upset. Once again Tokyo and Washington decide and leave the Okinawa people out of it. I would want to see details before making a comment. Then they would have to act according to the plan. It would seem the announcement came after a drinking party between the Americans and Japanese. There is no substance to it.

Worse things fall from planes, every so often corpses fall from airliners after traveling from overseas. They are people who hid in the wheel wells and die in flight from the cold and lack of oxygen.

bam_boo, you sum up the problem better than me. The Americans destroyed my families business. They were never paid by the Americans a yen for their loss.

Actually if they just printed it there would be less problems. Japan has been suffering destructive deflation for years. The key would be to increase not decrease the amount of yen and this would weaken the Yen. With a weakened yen the exports would be more competitive. The exchange rate should be 150 yen per dollar. The jiji's that control Japans corps are making money hand over fist since they do not pass along the savings from the strong yen. Instead they are buying government bonds and reducing the money supply.

Fadamor, I expected nothing less from them. Does this really surprise you?
budzie, China will not invade just because there is no marines on Okinawa and this plan has 10k of them on island.
bilderberg_2015, we are still on our island. True the culture and language have been weakened but we are still around.

Time for America to cut off all aid and assistance. Second would be refusing to sell them parts for their American made military equipment.

jforce being anti-base is not being anti-American. It is not the same thing at all. So now we wait for the plan. It looks to me that the 2006 plan will be used minus MCAS Futenma. There are so many different issues with the bases. The principle one is of sovereignty. The bases are a country to themselves, go onto any American base and it is like entering the USA. Second, there are so many of them on Okinawa. Third they block traffic flows and this includes emergency vehicles. How many people have died due to the longer trip required to go around the American base? Forth the base people make lousy customers, my friend ran a AU store. He went out of business since it was so hard for him to collect from Americans. They had to be tracked down and they hid on base. It was custom for most of them not to pay the final bill when PCSing. Fifth the rate of exchange is so bad things off base are too expensive, so most are not regular customers. Fifth there is the noise from the aircraft and the presence of the large military vehicles. There are more...
whiskeysour, actually I think there will be more MLC jobs onbase to replace departed Marines.

These things happen and it is not always due to the airframes age. These airframes were given extensive rebuilds. It is sad that some of the parts of the EA6B came down to earth before the rest of the plane. This is an aviation thing, we are not perfect and our planes are not as well. It could of been far far worse and as long as we fly planes there will be this problem.

CajunH2O, I am going to come to the defense of the US Marines. The vast majority of them are decent enough people. True a lot of them are single or unaccompanied by their spouses. This gives them wild image but calling them a "disease" is a disservice to them. As I said the question is which Marines they will move and from which camps? FYI, I am not now and have never been married to a US Marine.

realdoll, that would make sense. The Americans would not have to close any of the bases. However the 2006 plan called for all of the bases south of Foster to be closed. Camp Kuwae: Total return, Camp Zukeran: Partial return and consolidation of remaining facilities and infrastructure to the extent possible, Makiminato Service Area: Total return (Camp Kinser), Naha Port: Total return (relocated to the new facilities, including additional staging area, to be constructed at Urasoe), Army POL Depot Kuwae Tank Farm No. 1: Total return. MCAS Futenma being taken off of the list. All functions and capabilities that are resident in facilities designated for return, and that are required by forces remaining in Okinawa, will be relocated within Okinawa. These relocations will occur before the return of designated facilities.
I copied and pasted the previous, really I do not make this stuff up!

Yabaru, I do agree with you about separating the 2 issues. The thing about closing bases is each does something to contribute to the Marine mission. I would expect the Marines would have to build new warehouses to replace those on Camp Kinser. A new hospital is being built on Camp Foster to replace the one on Camp Lester. About Naha port, wonders why the US military could not use a civilian port? Anyhow it is not about the number of Marines but the ability to fulfill their mission.
I am surprised but happy the plan has been changed. Expect the changes will take time and hopefully the people of Okinawa do not hold up construction that is a result of the troop movement and camp closures. My view about MCAS Futenma, let it stay open. Try and reduce noise and risks but the Marines say they need it. They could reduce the amount of land used by the base and again fly only helicopters. That is my 2 yen

Just need to find out from where the Marines will leave. Knowing the Americans they will want a replacement facility for Camp Kinser before closing it. So what is the plan and when will it be done?

Yubaru, in a lot of ways I agree with you. I just try and get the Okinawan point of view online. I no longer get the joy of a F-18s passing low over my house. I no longer have to drive a long way to get around MCAS Futenma in heavy traffic. The thing is Tokyo and Washington treat the Uchinaa-ken like children. They do not involve the local community in any decisions or planning. Both expect them to obey their orders like obedient children. So Tokyo and Washington get upset when the Uchinaa-ken do not give their quiet consent. Tokyo firsts tries to bribe them then threaten them with the paddle. Washington then blames Tokyo for not honoring its promises when they have no control over the Okinawa people.
noirgaijin, the bases take up 18 percent of Okinawa. Worse it is some of the best land on island. Okinawa is really a small island.

JeffLee, so the people of Okinawa should listen to their "betters"? The people of Okinawa do not want the Marine airfields. Tokyo is trying to push their burden upon us. Yubaru, the Japanese government pays their salaries now. There is no new burden.

Only question is what the Americans want? MCAS Futenma could be made smaller with no fixed wing only helicopters. That was not done for whatever reason and even the noisy F-18's still fly into it. What the Americans really want is bases paid for by the government of Japan. If they are moved America would have to pay the new base bills. Once they are moved, Japan could use that money for other things. The base employees could be given special government jobs. The government already pays their salaries only difference would be what they do would be a benifit to the people of Okinawa.
