Hey how about finishing all of thse half completed roads in Japan. Better yet rebuild the houses of those who lost their home in 311? No cost to them, better than propping up the failed EU.

What a nice thank you from the people of Afghanistan! Time to pull out and let the country sink into the old cesspool. Tell them attack America again and face retaliation of 10 or 100 fold. The country is not worth a single American life. Bring them home Mr. President.

oginome, He is not the mayor of the city I am a residence. I did not vote him into office and it is not my place to yell remove him. Oh again we are not German and Adolf Hitler was voted into office unlike Tojo and his minions. He had enthusiastic support while the Imperial government had forced support. Support that was back up by assassination and prison. The election that made him Chancellor was a free one.
As for giving them "ammunition", they would manufacture it if needed. I will never apologize for the actions of the Imperial government. What more does the new government of Japan have to do? It was acknowledged and apologized also repatriation were paid. China needs to move past our tragic history but it will not. Hating Japanese including the people of Okinawa helps keep the peoples minds off of real problems.

NetNinja, The people of Okinawa are aware of the main landers trying to whitewash history. They tried to change the school textbooks about what the Japanese did to the Okinawa people during the Typhoon of Steel. So when Takashi chan spoke out it did not surprise me. One reason he can get away with it is because the Japanese bashers bash every one in Japan and not just him. Feel that they are attacking me and my family and do not even support the man! He said something really STUPID. Perhaps he might have a drinking problem and that slipped but do not think so. He knew what he was saying. Anyhow by the nature of the attack by China and the bashers, our words of disapproval are being drowned out. This event leaves me depressed about the future.

Gobshite, something is very wrong when ONE person says something stupid and then China blames all of Japan. It means the Peoples Republic are looking for an excuse to bash Japan. While I do not agree with the mayor, I do support his right to speak. Japan is not China or Germany. Anyhow when Takashi chan spoke those words and then the Japan bashing starts, it confirms to me it is hopeless. There is nothing that can be done to approve relations. If it was not him something else would of set it off. No amount of apologies will ever get Japan forgiven for its actions in the Pacific war. They will all be brushed aside as "insecure" etc. It is time Japan gets its rumps out of the air and treat China as a foe. As for the Japanese bashers, yes you! You never miss a chance to slander our country. It has problems but people like you feed the paranoid.

This is ONE person and not all Japanese. He is NOT even a national politician but China blames all Japan for the mouth of a single person. I just do not see peace in the future. I think if China could land troops on Okinawa, they will kill all of us. It makes me sad that my cousins in China hate us so much. I do not hate them in return.

Well so a mayor of Japan says something not so smart. Japan has free speech and China and Germany does not. My Chinese cousins really bother me at times. The only thing that makes sense is the Peoples Republic is using the hatred of Japanese to rule. The fact that one politician and not a national one can "damage" relations with China means there is no relation at all. Relations with China is a lie and I fear one day soon they will go too far.
Netninja, the bases on Okinawa are not for the defense of Japan. True the marines could easily get to the disputed islands, the question is will America actually do it in time? Second will America go to war with China over a couple of small islands?

some07791, the Chinese disagree with you. As far as they are concerned we are all guilty and they want to kill ALL of the Japanese people. The hatred of all things Japanese makes it easier for the Communist Party to rule China. One day they will go to war with Japan and try and kill all of us. I still wonder what he really said and what language were they speaking?

Japan needs the gas and it is OUR waters much closer to Okinawa than China. There will not be a war unless China starts one and it is a war they can not win. The more I read these posts the more I understand why the Imperial Japanese Government went to war.

Time for America to bring her troops home and stop all aid. Oh Cletus, the friendly Muslims in the area burn bibles all of the time and the Christian as well. In a lot of these countries it is a death offense to be a Christian but because the Americans may have burned a few Korans it means death to the infidels. Like a lot of the people here on this blog, they are just looking foe an excuse.

One man says something in Japan and the entire country gets bashed. I think what he said is being taken out of context or is a misunderstanding and the Chinese are just looking for a excuse. All of you are looking for excuses to bash my nation. I will not apologize for the actions of my ancestors or now lets others do it. The world is holding Japan to a standard they themselves can not meet just to bash them.

After the question of the new airfield is settled by canceling it, then the work can start to close Futenma. The bases are suppose to "protect" against Chinese occupation but the bases are an occupation by themselves. By GOD! I think the tide is turning at last!

Fadamor, the Okinawa people are not children or slaves to Tokyo. We are a representational democracy and it is one of laws. What would you have Tokyo do? By the law the new airfield can not be built. Suppose Tokyo can take away most or all of the sympathy money. Do not think this will stop the Okinawa people. Probably start a series of on base strikes by the MLC's on base. Massive protests blocking the gates to the bases. What would the Americans and Tokyo do then?

Who cares if there have or have not been dugong sightings, the Governor of Okinawa is saying NO to the construction. Is this really news? Did any of you expect it to have been an approval? The government of Tokyo has been denied and there is NOTHING they or the American military can do about it. In the "land of the free" the national government could force it on a state. At least in theory....Well so much for the new American airfield, the mighty America frustrated by 1.3 million Okinawa people.

arrestpaul, pearl harbor was still during peacetime. Darwin was when the war was over 2 months old. Anyhow it is also a book, old and new versions. This is not kiddie pap like Disney. Anyhow you made a mistake, WWII is pre Commonwealth. They had no choice to fight the war. In fact part of the reason for the Darwin disaster was that so much of the Aussie military was in Egypt and Churchill refused to let them came back and defend Australia.
Anyhow "remembrances" like this to me are just more Japan bashing. Japan has never been forgiven for the Pacific war. These ceremonies are very one sided and remember only the Aussie casualties. It is like the tip of a bigotry against Japaneses people that lies just below the surface, sleeping just waiting to be fully awake. I fear something will happen and the old racism against Japanese and perceived Japanese will be fully awake. I am not sure about Australia but I have been called many racial surs in America. There are many people around the world that hate Japanese and there is NOTHING we can do to stop it. Thus these ceremonies are to spread the hate to the next generation.

arrestpaul, actually Australia was part of the British Empire. I was wondering if anyone would pick up my one piece of marley. They of course had no choice than to go to war. A piece of truth is Japan had no plans to invade since they did not believe it was possible. While it was an American movie, it was written by an English writer. Truth comes where you find it. I have read the comics which is different but very serious.
About the remembrance, it was full of itself. Do not know how President Obama can compare it to Pearl Harbor. It has nothing to do with it. They only way they are related is the defense was a charlie foxtrot. Oh Snowden needs to do some reading. A lot more Americans died than the 89 Sailors in their defense. First add the 10 pilots of the P-40's. They owe a debt to the Americans since they prevented an invasion. No Americans and it would of been too tempting to the Imperial Empire.

Sweat Jesus protect me from the uninformed! The daisy-cutter was a massive bomb made by the Americans some 20 years after the war. More than a million Japanese died from the war and the effects of the war. Can you say famine? At least the Americans did not spoil the food in their garbage like in Germany. I think the number is closer to 10 million. 200,000 people died on Okinawa alone. 700 Aussies died in the war, more people died in my hometown. Oh I was not referring to a natural storm, the typhoon of steel is of course the American invasion. As to the Japanese living in Darwin, are they resident aliens or citizens? If they are citizens why did you label them Japanese? When do they become Aussies? As to the "remembering" it has a rather nasty sound to it. The Americans sent their young men and women to protect Australia and a lot of them died. They died fighting for you and your family. They died fighting for your independence and a lot of them died. The battle of the Coral Sea was a defensive battle of your country. So again I do not think this "remembering" is done for the right reasons.
