Serrano, Japanese citizens but not Japanese and receive no respect from America or Japan. A formal vote would be nice.

People think of me as "anti base", however I have become "neutral" due to my life events. Not that the Governor of Okinawa asks me for advice. So I am just stating the facts. So unless the national government pulls a fast one and changes the law or convince the governor to sign it, the new airfield will not be built. Another fact the Chinese will not swarm into Okinawa if this airfield is not built. The scare tactics are not going to work.

Elbuda Mexicano, hah! that was the Russia or Soviet Union of 66 years ago. If they attacked Japan today, we will kick their butt! In the air, it will be a "turkey shoot" and on the seas it will be a repeat of 1905. If the north hits the south, why should Japan become involved? It is not our fight or war. As far as I have determined it would be interference in the internal politics of Korea, remember Japan has denounced such.

troyinjapan, it is called crisis escalation. Somebody hits back but hits back too hard. Anyhow how is the central government going to get around the prefecture government? The PM of the time goes down to Okinawa and says please allow construction and the Governor of Okinawa says no. So the new airfield is not built, the Marines stay on Okinawa and nothing changes.

just-a-guy, so what are you saying, the hate of the South Koreans will be perceptual? So South Korea wants to be Japans enemy? Make Japan an enemy and they will be surrounded. Again the new base is pure pork, having no real value. Not even to harass Japan. This does place the Americans in an awkward position. Which one to support?

toguro, there are Army, Air force and Navy personnel to do that. The Marines are on Okinawa for training purposes. Free bases to train the Marines in tropical warfare.

smithinjapan, I agree with you and think Futenma will remain open. I was just stating political reality and the Governor, etc were elected as being "anti base". It would be hard for them to turn around and support it.

NetNinja, it matter not what I think. What makes you think the Governor or government or Okinawa will cooperate with the national government? MCAS Futenma has little to do with defending Okinawa from our foes. If the Chinese can land their ground forces in Okinawa, the small amount of Marines will not make a difference. The battle for Okinawa will be fought in the air and the high seas.

So sorry fat chance, you would have to hold a gun to the Okinawa Governors head and then I bet he will sill not sign off on it. The new airfield will never be built. Again so sorry but Japan is a Republic and not a dictatorship. The American plan is another outright lie, it will NEVER happen. Just how stupid do they think the Okinawa are with their lies?

zichi, looks like one of those fallout maps. I have seen those before but not for a power plant. Who needs enemy nukes when we have TEPCO? Between them them and our government ...

jackieng, I have long said that the Liancourt Rocks are now part of Korea. Japan should drop all claims to the rocks and be done with it. These rocks are not worth damaging our relations with South Korea. However the Japanese Prime Minister does not ask me for advice.

Seems to me a lot of attention over nothing. The new base is not a danger to Japan and really redundant. Japan is not going to send troops to the Liancourt Rocks. What the Korean government is doing is destroying relations with Japan for internal political gain. Like the three "lawmakers" the government of Korea is putting personal political gain over their nations interests. Korea can only treat Japan as a military foe for so long.

zichi, this is Japan and not Europe and I just do not see it happening. The key is the new tech has to be available before the nuke plants are taken off line. Right now it is only 29% due to all of the plants going offline. The backup capability is being used, Japan is right on the edge. Worse some of the plants operating will have to come offline for maintenance, what then?

zichi in Japan all of that coal, oil and gas has to be imported. Second it creates a lot of pollution, really how many people die in Beijing and the other major cities in China because of the pollution? This quiet fiend promotes lung cancer, heart disease, etc. The radiation threat is less than the pollution threat. Ever fly out of Haneda on a "clear" day to discover a brown blanket covering the city? This kills people yet no one is worried about it at all. With no atomic power it is going to get worse.

Looks like a pork project as it really will not do too much good. Am wondering if Japan has a base anywhere close to the rocks? Well it is their money though am puzzled by this move. Yes, it must be pork.

Konsta, actually I am more worried about China. They are working on developing a first strike capacity. North Korea while it has bombers, giggles, it would be a "turkey shoot". Russia does not have the stealth aircraft, so we should take them off of the list. Oh North Korea with it 80 "Beagles" is reason along for 20 more fighters. Oh again, I am not a Japanese person, this get tiring. This leaves China and while now a "surprise" attack would be difficult if not outright impossible. Stealth Aircraft make it possible. What China would want is a quick victorious war and keep America from responding in kind by threatening to nuke their cities. Of course if these aircraft can be tracked it becomes a moot point. About the F-18, it is enough for China to warn America about selling new ones to Taiwan. So there has to be something. Oh about my comment about not sane leaders, well I wonder about all of them. However picking on China and Russia is not right so I retract it with an apology.
