sfip330, relations have been getting poorer. Until Putin the Russians stole the investment of the Japanese companies in their gas fields. Why would any sane Japanese company invest more money only to have it stolen? Again Putin stole Japans investments and then acted surprised more did not come.

whiskeysour, there is not going to be any increased immigration. Because soon Japanese will become the minority and then the repressed minority. One thing the population of Okinawa is going up. So we should start moving to underpopulated areas of the mainland and multiply. It is a good thing the population of Japan will go down, no natural resources, natural disasters.

andrewfx51, perhaps but Japan will not sign the peace treaty. My guess is trade will also be limited. Russia has nothing to offer Japan. More telling is any agreement with them is worthless. About China and Japan teaming up, not likely but we have more in common with each other than China and Russia. China does need those Russian resources. 1.3 billion strong and growing.

whiskeysour, yea but we control them. If China wants them they will have to go to war with Japan and the United States. "do you feel lucky today?" The biggest problem China has is if they would do a military action and lose.

sfip330, Japan does not need Russia. Becoming dependent on Russian oil is dangerous, just ask the Ukraine. As for morals... Ask the German 6th army about the high morals of the Russians. More than 100k are captures, less than 4k made it back to Germany. How about the ethic cleansing of our northern territories another war crime. How about the killing of tens or perhaps 100's of thousands of Japanese POW's. I do think Minister Gemba will be forced to resign if he tries to do a peace treaty without returning our our northern territories. Russia does not have the high moral position. Again becoming dependent on Russia for energy is a sin that will generate its own punishment.
Oh Russia should be careful of the Peoples Republic of China. The Siberia resources must look very nice to them and I am sure it belonged to China first.

andrewfx51, so if Japan fights Russia and wins.... It would be a "just" war from our perspective. Then Japan can claim all of the land it can capture, perhaps with Chinese help. We get the islands, they get the mainland.

andrewfx51, put blame where blame is due the Russians. They shot down an airliner over these islands. The perp was never punished, if Russia has any decency they would return these islands. Letting Russia keep these islands is rewarding them for naked aggression.

I think he has hit the nail on the head. Nobody wants to make decisions in Japan, nobody wants to take responsibility. It shows in the actions or inactions after Kobe and 3/11. It shows in foreign policy and the wishy washy way of doing foreign policy. I was wrong about this guy.

smithinjapan, why should Japan give away the northern territories to appease the Russian thugs? There are still residents from there still alive and giving up legitimize Russian aggression. What will the Russians ask for next? I do not trust them, any agreement with them is worthless.

The issue of the northern territories will keep coming up. The ideal Japan should sign a peace treaty and get NOTHING is unacceptable. Worse is investing in what Russia stole from Japan. Really all talks should stop until the northern territories are returned.

Well a moon colony would make jobs. It would bring about new technology. The US has spent over a trillion dollars in Afghanistan and Iraq and has nothing to show for it. The bailout money saved the very rich and perhaps 100,000 union members. Why not aspire for better?

People will die from the pollution, the people are scared STUPID about radiation. However the coal and oil burning plants foul the air and kill people. In 1954 in London England, 4000 people died from pollution in a single night. How many people die in Japan from respiratory illness, heart disease and cancer from pollution? There are no easy answers, nuclear power will have to carry a lot of the load until something else is found. Otherwise deaths will go up, costs will go up and jobs and even population will go down.

Not sure how living in America is that different from Okinawa. I miss things like taxi cabs and buses. Only the really big cities have both. Our culture in America, well it is a mixture of a lot of things, Okinawa, Japan and different European. We teach the kids all things, limiting them to one or the other is very limiting. I handle the household with input from my husband. We do not worry if something is too Japanese or American. He teaches the English, while I teach the Hogan and Japanese. We live mostly like the other people in our community.

AmericanForeigner, second try at posting. I am wondering why did you married a Japanese women? You have no interest in the culture. Not sure why you are in Japan. Again culture is not in the genes but what is taught. A kid with western genes can be raised to be fully "Japanese". I do not understand your fears. Western culture has its share of problems as well. The best thing we can do is to teach our children to be tolerant of others. Examine our prejudices and not pass them on. About your fear of hentai comics, well there is a lot of printed porn in the USA. There is no escape from it. So how do you keep Japanese from your home while living in Japan?

Gingrich is a liar and was a critic of Ronald Regan. You should read some of his stuff from the 80's. Second his campaign has admitted to Gingrich saying a lie at the debates. There is nobody that will come forward to call his second wife a liar. He will pull his "pin" soon and be out of the election. The only question is if this will be in the primaries or general election. Clearly he is the most dangerous person to the American Republican party. He asked the question once "why people take an instant dislike to him", Senator Dole replied "it saves time".
