    Cool.

I go there once a year to meet my folks who spend 2 months there every winter. Hate having to transfer in bangkok.

IMO, their service can't be worse than UA, etc.

Actually according to my wife Japan tried DST once but it was rejected as everyone ended up working an extra hour.

Might have been the wrong timing and I think it could work now with the new focus on work/life balance.

    kikichan.

If you watched the news reports in Japan there were PLENTY of facilities for people to work outside their rooms. Heck if their underlings could do it(interviewed on TV while working) why couldn't they do it?

And it was NOT just the african delegations that had Tatami rooms as many try to imply. It hit across all nations and nobody else complained.

On average a Hotel will have one or two suite rooms at the most even in the west.

From your own post to me: "That’s because of the dearth of suite room facilities in Sapporo hotels,” explains a local hotelier.'"

No call me nuts but there is difference between a suite-room and a western style hotel room. Heck, I wish we had access to a suite room when we travel overseas on business, nah we just get the average Joe Brown hotel room in a business hotel. Asian travel to Hong Kong, etc you often have to walk sideways past the bed as there is not enough room.

And I find japanese tatami rooms more spacious/luxurious than most business hotels I stayed at.

As for sleeping in a futon on Tatami done it for a few years and no problems.

    Just me.

    helloklitty.

Will you apply the same standards to your countries companies?

Hold Boeing, IBM, Microsoft, etc responsible for contractors working their people to death? How about the help-desks in India, etc?

I like DST, grew up with it.

Yeah the sun can come up early but who will benefit from it?

OTOH, loved the extra hour of sunlight at night in europe, more people were out and about, like shopping, hanging out, etc. Also the extra hour allowed us to hit the local river/danube-channel after hours for a bit of a swim, etc.

Not sure about the energy savings now as we rely too much on computers, etc who are a major drain on the grid.

Wish they had it in Japan, I got a lovely roof-terrace and would love to have supper with the family on it while watching the sun set, etc.

I am all for it not so much for energy savings but because I think it will benefit family, etc interactions.

I agree you can only judge the situation when you are in it and give an appropriate response.

What I was talking about is what you can do legally. Do many people think I get attacked and I can go medieval on their asses, etc and I am justified in doing so. Also remember dead people can't give statements pro or con.

In reality it don't work that way. That's why 97% of the so-called self-defense claims are thrown out in court upon closer examination of the facts. And many "Victims" are charged with assault, etc to their surprise.

This, is what the MAJORITY of Self Defense classes DON'T cover, oh they will hype you up and teach you ILLEGAL responses, etc. Never mind sell you a bunch of useless goods like "force-enhancers", etc.

    That was my point.

Like I said she judged the situation and the persons intend and acted correctly.

Also agree with Mikihouse, too many people bask in the "security" of their homes and assume that anyone in the building must be entitled to be there and thus safe.

You would be surprised on how easy it is for someone to find out if the apartment is occupied, it can be done from the outside entrance door without knocking, touching it, etc.

Try the instant ramen in japan, NOT even talking Nissin, etc but the stuff that goes for 300Yen plus.

Yeah, they are instant ramen but take a lot to prepare, stuff you need to add before hot water and after and stuff that needs to be heated during, etc.

Lots of famous restaurants assist in making them.

    Triumvere.

I didn't miss the "Horn" case was heavily debated on the Self Defense forum I frequent and 90%(americans) agreed he should do time.

Everybody agreed his story was fishy and shooting 2 guys "IN THE BACK" with a shotgun don't sound like self defense, etc.

Yes, we know about the plain-clothes cop that sat in his car witnessing it all but doing NOTHING and heard the 911 recordings. Remember US news are NOT confined to the US only, the rest of the world read/hear them too.

We also know about the guy micro-waving his own baby in a hotel-room, etc.

    So what is your point?

    Nessie.

    Legally justified WHERE?

Ever heard the rule of excessive force? If a guy "attacks" you with a knife or bare-hands and you shoot him that is excessive force in most countries as your response(gun) was beyond the thread-level. Same way with superior weapons.

Might be legal in the states(even than some rules will apply).

Remember dead people can't speak so it is only your word vs NOTHING.

Of course the US is looking after their own side and if they make a few bobs in the process it is a bonus.

Said that I foresee another Cold-war coming up and with the current US troops in Iraq/Afghanistan/possible Iran I don't think that they can afford to play games with the russians.

Why because the europeans/asian partners won't back them.

Wonder how many monies/trade deals the proposed to the czech goverment in return for this.

Not like the US don't attach trade deals to get their way in order to get sanctions/bans lifted(cough S.Korea cough).

And if you think that the big guys do the work at the meetings you are way mistaken.

They are there to pass around the cucumber sandwiches and pose for photos, planting trees, etc while the real work been done prior to the event and by their underlings.

Reread the article. It sez there were not enough western accommodations for all the people (some 3000+). Nobody said or hinted that the accommodation was assigned by nationality or other criteria.

And I think I am safe in saying that the higher up you are up the totem pole the better your rooms will be.

Yet, besides JT I have seen no reports about people complaining about rooms, other gripes yes.

    Counter argument.

You walk down a dark alley, guy approaches you brandishing a knife(ignore his buddies in the shadows and behind you).

He wants your money are you justified to gun him down (provided you can)? Correct answer is NO. Just hand him your wallet and get he hell out when you can.

Forget the "Death Wish"/"Dirty harry"/Jet Li/etc movies real life don't work that way. The crims know the law better than you and got better lawyers on standby.

    Coligny.

Laws vary between countries. IME, most countries consider both parties as equally involved in a fight.

Yes, I agree the guy was in her house and she de-escalated the situation to the best of her ability. Want to count on what would have happened if she fought the guy, most likely she and her child would be harmed. I can't neither can anyone else.

She did what she felt right and it worked out.

IMO & IME, thinking just because a guy got a knife he is out to hurt/kill you is dead-wrong.

This is NOT Texas where a guy can call 911, talk about people breaking into the house next door and get off for shooting them in the back because he felt threatened.

And don't try german on me, I got you beat on that one. ;)

What I am saying is what is a legal response varies widely from what the average guy/gal things he can do.

From what I seen on japanese telly, etc.

Major complaint so far has been that the reporters couldn't do things as they liked. No flap about accomodation as they got access to the Net, etc on a free basis. Yep, they were whining about the "Press gifts" they got.

Just another "no news" from a source like they used for "WaiWai".

    hellokitty.

No, it would not have been, you would have been up for assault.

Here is the legal talk. If you get into a confrontation, if you call the guy names, etc YOU are taking the game to the next level. Don't matter who hits the 1st punch, a fight starts way before than. In legal terms it is a fight agreed upon by both parties NOT self-defense, etc. Hence why 97% of fights in pubs, etc are not declared as self-defense and the crims know it and play you for it.

If you walk past him and he jumps you than you got a self-defense claim. Back where I come from there is the 3-second rule, if you get hit and counter within 3 seconds it is considered an automatic reflex. Take longer and you are assaulting him.

Same way with if you can walk/run away from the situation it is over. Drop him and put a boot in it is an assault.

Basically if you can extract yourself it is OVER, anything after works against YOU.

This is where self-defense vs fighting comes in.

Hmmm, I take anything published in the "Spiegel" with a large grain of salt. They can be very biased.
