Get Real
In some cases, released prisoners are remorseful and transformed themselves as productive members of socitey. However not all of them will be happily live after. Most of them will be not accepted by society as new, decent and law abiding person. Some are getting more daring for repeating their past. Therefore, it is a vicious cycle for rewarding and pampering criminals in the prisons.
According my research, Singapore Changi prison is the most successful one for transforming criminals. However it is touch, harsh and similar with Japanese miltary style punishment during WWII. Changi by self is Japanese name. It is not a Singapore name.
Society will get some reward from criminals. It is not from staying at the prions and having nice meals. Such as criminals perform community service and cleaning for public. If we Get Real, there is no free lunch except for minors, elderly and disabled. Criminals have to contribute for their meals.
Being in prion is deterrent for commitiing the crime again in the future. Not for pampering and entertaining as rewards.

Being a prisoner means, they do not need to worry about food, clothes and shelter. They even can enjoy the free physical fitness class and equipment. Many homeless prefer to go stay inside prison however they are so relutant to commit the crime.
Society is rewarding criminals instead of punishing. I remember the aritcle about homeless man damanged car for being arrested. Prison is a luxury for them. Some of them have not showered or decent bed for ages. If they see that yummy photo, they will get hungry.

During Regan Era, US deregulate the financial market. Banks are free to borrow without proper risk assessments. The consequence was 2008 financial crisis. Not only US but also EU business have borrowed for properties and infrastructure investments. However there were no decent commercial return from most of the investments. The consequence were banks wrote off many non performing loans. Many banks from EU run out of the cash.
Unlike southern neighbour, Canada did not follow the deregulation of the market. Canada is fairly conservative for monetary policy. It does not share the cruel fate of swimming in the red sea as EU or US.
Labour market deregulation is good for Japan. However other deregulation will be kamikaze pilot mission for Japan. Japan is losing the competitiveness in many sectors. The more Japan open the domestic market, the more people will be unemployed.

I disagree with your logic that cheaper products will make economic miracle. Both Japan and China quadraple their GDP within 3 decades. However it is extremely doubtful that Myanmar will share the same category as high performing economies of Japan and China. Myanmar is still backward like Africa. that nation lack the productive and highly skilled workorce. There are some ethinic unrest for instabilty.
China growth was driven by oversea Chinese disposa investment and marketing prowess. Japan post war growth was driven by privillage access to US technology and market. Unlike them Myanmar has no oversea back up and special trading nation status of US. US consumption is also not strong like post WWII too. Without the huge market and oversea network, it is very hard to Myanmar to achieve the success stories of Asian Tigers.
Germany manufatctured high quality and more expensive products for world wide market. It is still a market leader for car, construction hardware and machine tools. Cheaper does not mean it will conquer the market. High quality engineering, competitivenes and innovation will conquer it.

Japan has written off many bad loans or non performing loans of Myanmar before. Myanmar has no hope for repaying that misused loans either. Most of the development loans and aids have been ended inside the pockets of corrupted officials. Myanmar has never honoured the obligation of debt.
It has been spoiled by West for interest of natural resources and strategic reason. No nation has been spoiled like Myanmar. That corrupted government of Myanmar has entitlement mentality too.
Borrowing money to Greece or Cyprus is safer than Myanmar. At least Japan will get some of their loans. Borrowing more loans to Myanmar likes let the bird fly away from cage. It will never come back.

I guess you have been born at that time. Pls be informative about the definition existed at that time. Both in native Ryukyuan and English.
I did not see any single word about China is legitimately claiming the Ryuku Kingdom in that article. Pls read all my posts, I mentioned as Ryuku was an independent kingdom from 15th to 19th century. Therefore your debate about paying tribute to Edo was not solid debate. Big brother bullied small brother and used to ask ransom.
The subsequent invasion took place in 1609. King Shō Nei was taken as prisoner to the Satsuma domain and later to Edo. However he was released later and Ryukyu Kingdom regained a degree of autonomy. Japan was not unified as today. Again I have to post Ryuku was not a part of Japan in 15th century.
I am not a pro Japan or China debater. None of nations losing territory is not my concern. I will not cry for their respective shrinking map.

You posted as
Ryukyu islands were a vassal state of Satsuma since 1609,
In fact
Vassal state means a state with varying degrees of independence in its internal affairs but dominated by another state in its foreign affairs and potentially wholly subject to the dominating state
Therefore Ryuku was not physically or morally belong to Japan in 1609 as you mentioned. Foreign and defense affair, it was a big brother Japan domination. Not a state affair.
In theory, Okinawa belongs to Japan. Reality is it belongs to US base. Nothing will last forever! Look at Scotland and Ireland republic. How far they have come through struggle? South has to rise again for their pride, dignity and honor.
Individual opinion does not reflect the Government standing. The fact that PRC and ROC ships come and go as they please since 1960s. Abe is the one crying loudly about his touch stand. However he was a PM before and nothing new about his hawkish stand. Life goes on!

What history are you talking about?
In 1477 The third king, Shō Shin, ascends to the throne. It was called as Golden age of the kingdom of Ryuku. In 1609 (April 5) daimyo (Lord) of Satsuma in southern Kyūshū conquers the kingdom. King of Ryukyu becomes a Japanese vassal state. It was not the beginning of colonization as you mentioned. The real occupation of Ryuku was implemented by expansionist emperor Meiji. Before Meiji restoration, Ryuku was free as bird.
Real colonization was started from 1429. In 1429, Chūzan occupies Shimajiri Osato gusuku, capital of Nanzan, unifying Okinawa Island. Shō Hashi establishes the Kingdom of Ryukyu, ruling as king with his capital at Shuri (now part of modern-day Naha).
Senkaku was never part of Ryuku as pro Japan die hard posters debated. Smaller Islands of Ryuku was started annexed since 1872. Largest Island of Ryuku was annexed in 1879. Senkaku became part of Ryuku since 1895. If Senkaku was part of Ryuku chain, Why was many years gap between 1879 to 1895? The answer can be found on
http://www.tokyoweekender.com/2012/09/senkaku-island-dispute/
Scotland will make referendum in 2014 for their destiny. It is enviable for Ryuku native too. The course of Okinawa belong to residents of Okinawa. Not a J government or US government or foreign expats.

Since 1895. In theory, Japan is a landlord of Okinawa.
Because they want to show that territory issue can not settle with backroom deal. Abe used to talk touch and intimidation. However he did not use force so far. He understand that if he use force, he has to win absolutely. If he lose, he will lose more Islands.
So am Japan. Japan is frustrated landlord who is impotent to make commercial gain from Senkaku.

I guess you got paid for potraying Mongul invasion of Burma as Ancient China invasion to Burma. It has nothing to do with ancient China. It was byself colonised and conquered by Monguls.
In fact Burma was very aggressive for invading and bullying of Siam. Ayodaya has still have Buddha statue heads cut by Burmese soliders. Burma tried to conquer Siam many times. Like mongul they suffered cruel fate and withdrew with massive loss.
History has showed Burma is fair weather friend who has never honour the debt obligation. Currently Burma is sweet to Japan because outstanding loans have been written off. However Japan can not bail out Burma unperfoming loans all the time. Besides that China helped to build Burma infrastruture projects and gave many development aids during western sanctions. It has never appreciated the help from both Japan and China.
No wonder Burma is still backward and corrupted like Africa.

Japan was already told by Economists in 1990. Within a few yrs, it will be told again. One factor is demographic. Working population is shrinking. Due to touch time, even some part of working age population are underemployed and unemployed.
One factor is Japanese economy has matured. Getting decent growth is not easy. For reviving good old days, need new and fresh idea and attractive products. So far many J famous brands are swimmng in the red sea known as losing market share and over manufaturing of inventories.
One factor is government spent too much on defense and infrastuture. Defense is unprofitable. Infrastruture is profitable however it will take many years to recover the capital. It will not make decent return overnight.
Another silly mistake is Japan wrote off many bad loans of developing nations such as Myanmar. Those loans are not charities. However Japan wasted a lot of development loans for diplomatic and strategic interest. Japan did not gain any cent from infrastructure projects of those corrupted nations. It has no concern about commerical return and bank liquidity.
Almost empty banks can not write off bad loans for a long term. J households can not bail out government waste and misadventure. Japan have to concern more about own finance is in order instead of others.

People in festive mood means, consumers are over confident about the economic growth will last forever. They will take more risks and more debt. Government spending will pump the jobs and business oppourtinies. However pumping growth will make more and more debt. Government can not print or pump the money forever. When the growth is peaked, there will be another bubble of 1990.
The logic is real growth come from competitiveness and innovation. Another word is high quality is export. The root cause of pro long J recession were bubble of real estate and stock market. That two sectors made speculation and short term boom. However they were the wreckers of economy and fortune.

How long and how much resources required for preparation? Back in 1980s, Soviet Union got broke due to unlimited spending for preparation. It needs to beg for charity for surviving. It has been disintegrated. Although US is not bad like Soviet now, debt ceiling has to raise for every year. Will Japan foot the bill for necessay preparation?
Congress is getting sick of ever rising debt. Many unemployed Americans are depening on food vouchers. Homelessness and hunger is part of daily lives. Uncomfortable truth is US is too broke for preparing another war. Irag war alone has costed more than a billion per week. Mr Dempsey logic is out of touch with the reality.
Avoid war by cutting more and more of defense budget. Mr Demsey paycheck should be smaller too.

You might come from another planet. In the perfect world everything is sustainable because of limited whaling or scientific research. However many species of marine are more at risk than before due to the environmental damage. Another factor is rising temperature of sea and unlimited consumption.
I do not blame Aussie for their grave concern. They have natural wonder of Great Barrier Reef. Even it is questionable for how long it can survive from cruel reality.
