JustTheFacts, I'm afraid those statistics will be ignored. The point here is to vent your anger at the world on Japan - and this board, being anonymous, is supposed to give a chance to do just that. And if that is against the facts? "Don't confuse me with facts, I've made up my mind." A kid committed suicide - Japan must be a terrible place to live, regardless of the reasons, circumstances etc.

Cleo, have you seen a picture of SS recently? They are flying Jolly Roger. If they show themselves as pirates, they should be treated as such. Ramming other ships is an act of endangering human lives, so they also act like pirates. They condemn themselves.

The only problem at hand is that the SS folks are suspected of having endangered HUMAN lives, and there was no need for that. Now the law will deal with them. If their own footage doesn't show anything criminal then they will be let go. What's the need for this discussion?

whyamiinjapan, and what would give you the right to tell everybody what they should eat or not? Unless this is human meat, which happens to be illegal AFAIK, people have the right to choose their own food, thank you very much.

smithinjapan, "Why not just let the videos air as they are and let the people decide?" It's the SS folks who have been hiding the tapes so far, so you should be grateful to the Australian Police for giving the world the chance to see them. After seeing them you will have a chance to evaluate them by yourself.

Starviking, yes, there is a resemblance there, but I'm afraid it was the other way around - such a "custom" of enslaving women existed way before the game, so I'm afraid it just tried to imitate the reality.

hoserfella, are you trying to say that TPOJ has ran away from America because he is interested in "rape porn?" And would you happen to know him? Especially after NOT reading, as you said, of what he wrote on the difference between a real rape and a video game rape? He is making a distinction about virtual life and reality, but you are making personal offensive remarks? That would make whatever you have said pretty irrelevant to the discussion.
Moderator: Readers, please focus your comments on the story, not at or about each other.

aintgottimetobl, I'm afraid it's you who is comparing wrong things. This is a game for adults, I understand. Here the problem is what effect video games have on adults, not on children. I'm against giving violent games, either killing or raping, to children. Also, children live in a world shaped by adults, so if we allow them to watch movies with shooting, they may react them in their games. The same thing may go with rape - if we allow them to see it, they may play it, but as it is now, the game is for adults, so I don't see any more harm done than from other games. As in many other countries, in Japan as well the children and adult world should be separate.

People, grow up. So, it's OK to sell games that stimulate killing people but not the ones that stimulate rape? Hasn't it been argued here that violent games don't necessarily make people violent? On what bases would you say that killing people ON SCREEN in a violent way, say Postal or other games, isn't as bad as raping people ON SCREEN? Oh, by the way, I don't have the game or plan to buy it, but those double standards really bother me.

I wonder why anybody who is "unmarried, between jobs, new to xxx-country" should get a credit card. That's begging for a jump. If you show that you are stable and responsible, then there may be a chance. Otherwise, as it was pointed out, the company is asking for trouble. A card is not your right - it's a social form of acknowledgement that the person is trustworthy, even if that doesn't always work that way. So, earn some kind of trust from somebody, like a person you can marry, a company that you have stayed with for some time, or a person who feels you're stable enough that they could vouch for you, and you just may get the card, regardless of the nationality. Oh, btw, I got mine after a few years of working and showing I pay the income tax.

Having such speeds is like trying to drive a Ferrari in a countryside; you can boast of theoretical speeds, but as it was shown in a discussion a few days ago, once you connect to "real" internet, especially using foreign lines, you get back to being stuck in the narrow lines or in the internet traffic. But hey, you get your bragging rights!

Like with any other language, in order to be able to use it fluently you need to be able to use both the spoken and the written language. I find the spoken language relatively easy, but the written part is not so. If you don't read, however, you can't really master the language.

gogogo, there is no such a thing as "Japanese internet outside of Japan." Once you want to connect to a site OUTSIDE of Japan you can' obviously use the Japanese lines, you have to rely on the "foreign" lines. And that's why you'll be getting lower speeds on non-Japanese lines, because they are foreign, which in this case means "inferior."

borscht, SPEED is a group of four girls from Okinawa, they had pieces like "My Graduation", "White Love" etc. The leader, Hiroko, was IMHO one of the cutest AND most talented singers on the Japanese scene.
"Speed is officially the best selling female group in Japan when it comes to combined album and single's numbers. They also have the highest selling album (Moment) and single (White Love) and consecutive number one Oricon Weekly chart debuts in the respective categories. Prior to their disbandment, none of their singles released ever sold below the 550,000 mark - a feat. yet to be matched by any other jpop artist or band. "

ExPrinceska, you summarized it very neatly, that as very amusing. However, blame it on the Amnesty International: the numbers are not final. Where you see a "+" (plus) sign next to the number it means that this is the highest verified number, and it is estimated to be higher, but the exact number is not known. For example, it is said that the number of people executed in China goes in thousands, close to 5000 or so, but that cannot be independently verified. As our friends at Wikipedia say,
"Six countries (China, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq, Sudan and the United States) account for 91 percent of the reported world total number of executions. Of 1,591 confirmed executions in 25 countries worldwide, at least 1,010 people were executed in China during 2007. The sheer size of the Chinese population is such that when a comparison of the percentage of population executed is made the situation in China appears to be disproportionately large. Iran (0.25 per 100,000) executes more prisoners per capita. The exact numbers of people executed in China is classified as a state secret."
That is why where you see the "+" (plus) sign it is estimated to be much higher. The real numbers may shuffle the order a bit, so that the "neighbors" of the US and Japan will not be the countries you see in this list. But what the real order and numbers are we wouldn't know for sure.

ExPrinceska, Google is your friend. You're not exactly right, Japan is not even in the same league with Iran. Take a look at the numbers taken from the Amnesty International:

larguero, each country cheers their own. If the first 11 don't get that much cheerleading, maybe it's the problem in their countries. Besides, are you trying to say that number 12 in the world is a failure? Maybe 12 in the world, but number one in Japan, besides, she is a recognizable figure in China, so that's why she is the one chosen to carry the flag.
