My friend is a vegetarian, and I do not tell a lie, his breath is disgusting! He's not even a Japanese oyaji. But is breath is far worse! That alone puts me off ever becoming vegetarian.

Talk of inefficiencies of producing meat is very... white middle class. Being vegetarian is a choice that many millions of people in the world do not have, lest they become malnourished and starve.

And finally, as long as their is demand for meat in those countries where people are rich enough to have a choice, it will be produced for consumption.

I feel like a double bacon burger with a half pound of beef. Mmm.

I have a big problem with this kind of demonstration. In my opinion, some PETA demonstrators have penchant for self gratifying exhibitionism. They look so smug.

Sure, they get photographed, but do they really think even ONE PERSON is going to become vegetarian after reading those signs? I don't.

In addition to such topics as emotions vs. reason, the “fuzzy” [holistic] thinking of the Japanese vs the linear thinking of other people

This is NOT unique to Japanese people. As far as I'm concerned, people either think logically / linearly, or they don't.

In my personal experience, I have worked with some Japanese people who's thought processes are far from linear. And it did not result in superior outcomes. In fact, in the worst case, they cause gross inefficiency, and create more problems than they solve. But as I said, not unique to Japanese.

One of my teachers said it well:

The only thing unique about Japanese people is that they THINK they are unique!

OK, stop right there at the first paragraph:

covers the elements in Japan’s traditional culture that have made them remarkably successful in virtually all of their endeavors.

I really hope he has something to back that up in his book. I really struggle to see how someone can make that claim. No, I'm not just talking about WW2.

Poor Emiri getting caught up in all this. I still love the costume. I hope the replacement has the same impact, but somehow I think it will be far too conservative and boring, in order to shut up the ultra conservative ossan establishment.

A friend in New Zealand had it done a few years ago. The first operation was unsuccessful, meaning no improvement in vision. The second operation, which cost more money, was also unsuccessful. After that, they couldn't modify the cornea any further. She still wears glasses, has very poor vision, and is about $5000 poorer.

was found sprawled on the ground

To Moderators: I know "sprawled" is correct, but to me, it's just a little bit distasteful to describe the state of the in this way.

And it kinda recognises the contribution being made by the partner providing the 'service', whether it's getting up extra-early to make a bento or cleaning ditches on a Sunday.

I provide a service to my family, 60 hours a week, 50 weeks of the year, and I don't ask for anything specifically in return.

    nandakandamanda:

but the wife says she will wake up and drive the car to come and get me at any hour for 2,000

This is a genuine question - how can you consider it reasonable for your wife to ask to be paid to help you out? Will she not do it for free? I know I would be more than willing to help my wife for free, and would be gobsmacked if she expected me to pay her for anything.

I earn a living to support my family, she has free access to money. Performing monetary transactions for anything seems to devalue and sour the whole concept of marriage, from my point of view.

And to think I was considering proposing to my Japanese GF soon...this is seriously frightening

    Don't do it, man!

Ha ha ha! In my opinion, if a woman, wife or not, expects to be paid for sleeping with her husband, it is tantamount to prostitution. I find being paid for making bentos and haircuts hilarious. If my wife ever suggested that, I'd give her one option - the door.

Teletama?? No fair!! This should be on NHK so I can see it. It would boost the programme schedule quality, too.

The Miss Universe judges will love it. No, I'm not being sarcastic. I believe they will. Now... if only I could bump into her in Azabu.

YGHhome: No, no, no. This fashion is in no way influenced by capitalism or Americanization. Walk down the street in Tokyo, you will see it is influenced by modern Japanese culture.

Yeah! This outfit rocks! You're all a bunch of conservative fuddy-duddies. When I see her walking down the runway on this I'll feel proud of my, er, adopted country.

I think this kimono appears very avant-garde and shocking

Yes!! This alone will get her a place in the finals.

    Mmmm. Pink suspenders and undies...

Disillusioned: Mmmm yes, those word pairs are distinctly different to me. I'm fairly fluent in Japanese. I'm also talking about languages I've never heard before. I'm willing to bet that if a native speaker of any spoke two distinct but similar sounding words, I'd be able to hear the difference. That's why it baffles me that Japanese people just "can't distinguish" between R and L.
