Believe his apology is only half-done. He has never been shy about his supportive position on corporal punishment. As I pointed out earlier don't think the influence of his views as city mayor towards the mindset of the teachers in Osaka should be overlooked here and thus believe his apology would need to be more about himself than that on behalf of the local administrators he supervises. The media should get more into accusing him to also be the one at fault.

It appears that Hashimoto upon meeting with the boy's family offered his apologies both personal and on behalf of Osaka city and stated that he regrets having been supportive of corporal punishment prior to this incident and that he will correct his position.

Would imagine these guys to already have internally discussed and agreed on what to and what not to explain to the police. Would be interesting to see how strong the cohesiveness of this group actually is upon each individual undergoing interrogations. Certain yakuzas should also be paying attention.

Good on Kuwata knowing how difficult it is going to be to change the way young athletes are trained here. The biggest challenge would be to change the mindset of many here who truly believe in the benefits of corporate punishment to make the athletes mentally tougher.

Wonder if Abe's message is aimed at the US more so than China to make sure he has their attention amid schedule conflicts disabling him to meet Obama any time soon.

warispeace: Believe they are quite different, key difference being Reagan sought to tackle inflation through strengthening the supply side whereas Abe is trying to create inflation through strengthening the demand side. Similarity may be in corporate tax cuts, which Abe is yet to address in specific detail.

Risky option? Yes. Avoidable option? Probably not. Key is to make sure this breeds enough optimism in investor and consumer sentiment and gets the positive spiral rolling otherwise the risks may prevail. As with everything else in life positive thinking to bring courage and drive actions is a critical starting point for anything to become successful.

Would not be so quick to praise Hashimoto for his remarks on this one, as he had clearly been in support of corporal punishment as a necessary educational measure until this incident took place. He should rather offer a sincere apology for the influence his remarks as city mayor may have had on the mindset of the teachers in Osaka.

Interpretations may change over time with new findings or new perspectives through looking back at history in a longer term decades if not centuries down the road, but there are certain facts that will never change such as what the museum displays.

Have a feeling this guy is never going to be caught unless he becomes unable to maintain his control and restraint as well as he has done so far. This guy is clearly full of pride and confidence and the police should thus consider deliberately issuing overtly provocative statements of personal affront to make him upset thereby begin to overdo whatever he is doing. Police actions particularly after their grave error in arresting the wrong people appear to have been meekly submissive if not spiritless which I feel is keeping this individual calm and careful.

Wonder if Hosono the former Minister of Environment as well as Minister of nuclear crisis management at DPJ has anything to say about this. As with everything else any moral issues to come up at the lowest level of an organization has much to do with the quality of top management leadership.

I'm no Ishihara but if Mt Fuji really erupts at this timing after what happened in 2011 I will have to believe in the will of a greater presence. Would however much prefer a different kind of divine incident such as, say, miraculously striking huge amounts of oil in the Tohoku region.

Agree with the passage. Note that Abe has been fairly careful with his statements separating those indicatives he "will" work on those he "may" work on. This issue clearly belongs to the latter and was referred to only to keep certain supporters happy while not committing to do anything. Abe is not stupid.

Being verbally abused and slapped by the bully coach was clearly a part of everyday life for the basketball team. Can easily imagine the boy to have taken the hardest beating having been the captain of the team. Putting fundamental issues relating to the traditional sports and training culture aside, this could nonetheless have been avoided had the school not denied existence of corporal punishment when this issue was brought up in the first place when the boy was still alive. Cannot imagine how painful it must have been for the boy to witness how the school handled the matter.

Truly heartbreaking. So unfortunate that the nation needs to wait for extreme incidents of this nature to occur in order for people including bully coaches still in existence throughout Japan to finally open their eyes and the wholly systematic school operating business model dependent on excelling in sports competitions which in part encourages these coaches to do what they do to start changing. RIP.

There is no way this rat race can remain financially justifiable and sustainable for both ends in this day and age. Continued funding of billions of taxpayers money for the so-called research initiative is certainly not LDPs top priority and thus hope they can put an end to this as part of all other necessities to cut down on wasteful spending.
