Sen Webb was the lone voice of the liberal Democrats.. he actually came out and stated that the Democrats should cool it.. and not try to jam health care down the thoats of the people until (R) Scott Brown got sworn in.. so hopefully he is not up to crap.. and really trying to come up with a solution.. like accept a move to Tinian or Shimoji. As I said before, if Okinawa was sinking, would that leave Japan vulnerable without anything to do? Nope, the bases would move to the nearby Islands or back to the US or Guam and Tinian... there are options.

Everything that needs said is said.. it seems the US accepts democracy when it speaks in their direction, but when it doesn't, then they talk like they "want to hear direct from the people" as if now they want to blow off the votes and elections and talk to someone (who they can bribe) and then speak like THIS, is the voice of the REAL people. It's stupid and a ploy to ignore the DPJ getting democratically elected in large part on the platform of decreasing the US military presence on Okinawa and also the democratically elected mayor of Nago who also wants the "schwab agreement" nixed..
This going to Okinawa to "listen to the people" is BS and a way to say that he "got down in the trenches" and heard from the real people. He will stop listening when he finds one voice that says they should keep the original plan.. because they want to make some money selling bento meals to some GI's that might drive by his store..

If they keep "listening" to people they will eventually talk to an idiot or drunk politician or someone who will take a bribe.. and "hear" what they want and publicise it enough to drown out the election of the DPJ, and the election of the new mayor of Nago and the consensus of the Okinawan people.. who all want the base moved to another place in Japan, out of Okinawa or the country all together.. Just keep "listening" and eventually you'll "hear" some nobody say something you can "run with"..

It's not guys like these that get laid though, not like the old movies when women had virtue. She'll date some guy with an earring, ponytail, works behind a bar or in a band more than likely. Someone who won't do anything for her except give her a small cheap trinket..

He's already heard the opinions of Okinawans and Japanese.. through the election of the DPJ and the election of the new Nago Mayor... they don't want the Futenma AB on Okinawa..

65 yrs ago, we killed 30% of the civilian population by bombarding the Island for 82 days.. more civilians that were killed in Hiroshima or Nagasaki. We spent the next 27 yrs blaming the Japanese for not surrendering sooner and giving starving women and children food to "win them over" while taking what land we wanted to take for use as military bases. We are as quilty as the Japanese.. for the Okinawan are the step child of Japan, who they prostituted out to the American.. each blame each other with the Okinawan inbetween. Now the LDP was kicked out of control and it is interesting to watch the DPJ stonewall this "schwab bases agreement".. it is looking like Tinan (90miles north of Guam) might be the solution for getting Futenma MCAS off Okinawa... that would be another 2000+ marines off the Island.

But back to that place.. it is a very nice peaceful area next to the ocean on the southern coast near Chinen.. not a lot to do around that area but that is a good tourist spot... you might want to visit Gyokusendo cave and the peace memorial also, they are within 30 min drive.

Marion, actually there wouldn't appear to be so many buildings on Okinawa except for 19% of the Island is occupied by US military bases, making what buildable land there is left (the northern half of the Island is mountainous or taken by the kadena ab, munitions area) very crowded. Even the roads wind around the bases..

We need the fence, not just a virtual fence but a physical fence over all of the likely places for crossing, and a virtual fence over the other parts.. We have app 12,000,000 illegal aliens in the USA, they need deported and they can come every year on workers permits to work, then to return. Mexicans are some of the hardest workers and best workers, honest nice people... we just need to keep control of the border.

I got a feeling that if he thinks he can't win reelection, he won't run. He got really lucky to win, I don't even think he expected to win. He's got real think skin and very little experience and I think as the most junior senator, he as president is uncomfortable with speaking to all the older men in congress like he is lecturing them.
If he doesn't run again, he will try to come across as a guy who never planned to run again. Like he was wanting to go in, do the job and get back into the private sector and then maybe come up with an idea that presidents should just have one term so they wouldn't be running for reelection during the first term. He could make himself look enlightened and above it all. In reality the decision would be that he didn't think he could win or he is just too wore out and stressed over the job.

I looked this up a long time ago.. I seem to remember that Patriotism is backing up your country, loving it blah blah and Nationalism is the same thing but a willingness to allow the government have much more power over the people for the "good" of the country.. and to do it without question.

memyselfI...maybe Hatoyama is looking at that issue. Although 20% of Okinawa's main Island is occupied by bases, only 8300 MLC workers (and IHA) are employed on base. Their wages are paid by the GOJ, not the US govt.
Also, with the population of Okinawa at 1.3 million, and 8300 GOJ employees working on the bases. I figure 830,000 are of working age, so this works out to about 1% of the Okinawan adult population being put to work on 20% of Okinawas best land areas! I don't call this good for the Okinawan economy..
