yeah.. I was making up the figure on the 830,000 being working age.. but it seems about right given a pop of 1.3 million.
Your right about money being used unwisely. I think it is common that when money can be spent..it will be spent and misused especially when handed over without oversight. Now the govt of Haiti wants to be in charge of something.. not the rescue efforts..but the rebuilding and "distribution" of the money/aid they will receive over the next 10 yrs to rebuild their country.. we're fools if we allow this to happen.

zman12:
Pleases read my comment again: Although 20% of Okinawa's main Island is occupied by bases, only 8300 MLC workers (and IHA) are employed on base. Their wages are paid by the GOJ, not the US govt.
Also, with the population of Okinawa at 1.3 million, and 8300 GOJ employees working on the bases. I figure 830,000 are of working age, so this works out to about 1% of the Okinawan adult population being put to work on 20% of Okinawas best land areas! I don't call this good for the Okinawan economy..

The same could be said about China.. they can't invade Japan either.. even if they did have a destroyer and carrier unit and 100,000 man parachute special forces team... they'd be knocked out of the sky before they got past Taiwan..this whole war talk thing is dumb.. It has very little to do with war.

Everyone know that "within crisis is oppertunity"... this is all Rush was saying and when it comes to politics, it is even more apparent. Anyone disagree with the quote? Is Obama different? He knows if he doesn't come to the aid of Haiti on the other hand, the hammer will drop on him also.

tkoind2, yeah I think Japan does a lot in the "region" but very little outside the region, infact they are the biggest aid givers in Asia..maybe a lot of it is the fact that China and Japan don't have the military carriers/destroyers patroling the world and hence don't have the logistical means to provide first responder aid.. I still think the white/chrisitans do more than their fair share and most of them races they help wouldn't return the favor..

How about looking at facts.. such as "who" is in Haiti now and a dozen other times in the last 100 yrs to save that race that lives there. Who (race) is always going to the aid of other races.. there are many races of man, and they all have stengths and weaknesses.. don't lump them into one sized fits all.... Doctors use to do that..

This is not a racist theme..it is historical and present day fact. it is the white race that responds with medicine after natural disasters, rebuilds cities after wars etc etc.. no other race does this and if the white race was in trouble, they'd be on their own and infact might be attacked, killing off the men and raping the white women..

I read in an anthropology book that Japanese men have the lowest testosterone levels of any group of people, the sex characteristics therefore are less pronounced.. ie.. smaller penis, smaller ass in male and female and smaller breasts, lower sex drives, all functions of sex hormones..

How is that a racist theme.. read the history of American aid to Haiti.. and watch waht will happen after this earthquake.. the fact is, whites are almost always the race that "comes to the rescue" to non whites..

Yeah it is a double standard but the conservatives/republicans have their selves to blame. At my work I know 15 people, one voted Obama and of the other 14 I was the only other to vote.. for McCain, all the others didn't vote although they were rooting for McCain.. I would have prefered Romney or Huckabee but I still voted for McCain, at least I voted..

"trash article 9...."
I don't think so. Trashing Article 9 would be like trashing the US Bill of Rights - both are integral parts and it is up to the people to decide, not outsiders. First thing the SDF needs is to secure the borders of Japan, the US personnel should be shipped out to any missions.
Haha! apec states that it is up to the Japanese to decide, then goes on to say what the Japanese should do first.. ha ha ha! aw

China is no threat... their military is defensive in nature.. China would have a hard time attacking Taiwan, they couldn't do much when they invaded North Vietnam and when the US was kicked out of the PI, the Chinese never attacked them and that was over 20 yrs ago.. aw

The US military or US Govt are not paying Okinawans anything for the land use on Okinawa as Yuritani stated.. the money is coming from the Omoiyari yosan budget. Any payments to Okinawans prior to 1978 was irregular or non existent.. aw

I think this applies to those who buy into the idea that they are safer with the US stationed in Okinawa.. just like the ones who thought they were safer when the Japanese who were stationed in Okinawa prior to the Battle for Okinawa that resulted in the US bombing Okinawa fro 82 days killing 1/3rd of the civilian population... It also applies to those who are being paid for (prostitutes) whom work MLC jobs on them bases.. aw
