My understanding is that the Hawkers have publicly stated that they are sickened by the book and do not want the money, but want justice instead. Is that not the case?

The FBI can bring down as many NY crime families as it wants. Unfortunately, new crime families pop up immediately to replace the departed. Organized crime cannot be completely eliminated. Human greed and lust for power will always overcome and endure.

Famous celebrities are such hypocrits. You didn't see Sting advocating debate on anything during the height of his popularity and record sales in Japan. He and nearly every other Hollywood celebrity keep quiet when they want to make money in Japan. It's amazing how they suddenly become so righteous after becoming multi-millionaires.

Why??!! It's absurd to do so at a time when the Japanese govt. is crying poor mouth about not having funds to cover the annual budget and foaming at the mouth to raise various taxes on the public. Unbelievable!!!

Kan has said he hopes the cut will encourage companies to increase investment and create more jobs.

Yeah right, companies are flush with cash right now and they haven't chosen to create more jobs. Even when they've hired, more than 90% are temporary staff. Some companies now run entire offices with temporary staff. The Japanese govt. should put an end to widespread corporate abuse of temporary workers by capping the number that can be use at 15-20% of total staff.

The selection process needs to be changed to remove the subjective human element. A scoring process should be created whereby countries receive points for things that can be verified and documented publicly for everyone to see. At the end, the points and other statisical data for each country would be entered into a software program that automatically selects the winner based on the strength of the bids and luck of the draw in cases where two or more countries have an equal standing.

Probably going to take her earnings and finish her studies at Columbia University. Then take a mundane job. She might go back to music, but that life seems to burn people out faster than other jobs.

Fadamor: Like I said, returning to Columbia Univ. is not an option.

Japanese people follow rules when they want to follow them. When they don't want to follow certain rules, they simply ignore them and do whatever they want. In my long time living here, I've reached the conclusion that Japanese are not as rule abiding as I previously thought.

Most Japanese are totally neutral due to a lack of historical amd cultural exposure, rather than "anti-jewish".

Totally disagree with this utterly ridiculous statement. Nice little rant on history but you're mistaken about the here and now. Anti-semitism is alive and well in modern Japan. Take off your rose-colored glasses Charisma man and you will see.

Of course some of my relatives fought and lived or died in WW2

Did your relatives die fighting the Nazis or were they exterminated at Nazi concentration camps? If not, then we are talking about two very different things. The Simon Wiesenthal Center is trying to protect the feelings of those who lost relatives and friends to the Nazis. Wearing a Nazi era uniform in public is extremely insulting and hurtful to those who lost loved ones.

Who cares. A Nazi uniform could be seen as a fun costume. Its not like people are buying them and wearing them in anti Semite rallies across Japan. Lighten up already. People dress up as all kinds of things at costume parties. If I saw a guy dressed as an SS Nazi or Hitler at a costume party, I would take the joke instead of feeling all offended.

bobbafett: You might feel different if your parents, brothers / sisters or grandparents were tortured and gassed in Nazi concentration camps. In such a case, I don't think you would find the costume so amusing, even at a costume party.

I'm also surprised that Don Quijote Co. publicly acknowledged the letter and agreed to stop selling the outfits. Japanese tend to be fairly anti-jewish. A recent example of this were remarks made a previous health and welfare minister in response to allowing US and other foreign health insurance companies enter the Japanese market. During a speech he said that Japan should not allow "the greedy Jews" take over and control our health care. Those were his exact words. I could cite numerous other examples of anti-jewish remarks and behavior in Japan. Trust me, complaint made to the Simon Wiesenthal Center is not an isolated incident. The institute monitors Japan very closely because of the anti-jewish sentiment.

She got into Columbia straight out of high school so obviously she has the brain to do other things. I wish her the best.

My cousin works in the admissions office at Columbia. She said that Utada got into the school because of her and her father's money. She didn't even finish her degree and Columbia told her not to bother returning.

I am all for the "Ganbare Nippon" movement and all, but I would like to see a wider range of people involved. People in their 20s would be nice. Some younger people I know actually said they feel like nothing will change anyway, so why bother voting?

Younger people, WOMEN (herbivore men do not count) and MINORITIES that have Japanese citizenship would be nice. But you know what, it will never happen because the old grumpy men do not welcome in those groups.

ultradodgy: That sounds dodgy as I've never heard of it. The Japanese govt. is not insuring all residential property owned by individuals.

Besides the tax credit on interest that you pay, how does capital gain tax apply in Japan?

The capital gains tax is 39% if the property is held for 5 years or less, 20% if held for more than 5 years. There are also many kinds of special deductions, for example a JPY 30 million deduction (maximum) from the sale of an individual's main residence. Further, if an individual disposes of land acquired in 2009 or 2010 which it has held for at least five years as of 1 January of the year of disposal, it can take a deduction from the gain equal to the lower of either the gain itself or JPY 10 million.
