I think Eri might enjoy that scene from the Pink Panther when Inspector Clouseau tries to pronounce "hamburger" with his French accent.

Eri, you can view it here:

I had a similar experience in my own country. I traveled to Kentucky and tried to order a blueberry muffin. The waitress kept saying, "A what?"

police believe several weeks have passed since the death of the victim. The cops here don't like to go out on a limb, do they? (for my idioms lesson)

No fun to watch documentary movies.

What about that fat guy in a baseball cap's anti-American movies? You didn't like "Roger and Me," or "Bowling for Columbine," or "Un-fahrenheit 911"?

The Cove was quite enjoyable. I saw it for free in its entirety on Mega Video about a week ago. It's a can't miss for anyone with any interest in Japanese culture. In the movie you'll see how the Japanese try to buy influence in the International Whaling Commission by bringing in countries that have nothing to do with whales or whaling who will promise to vote for the Japanese side of the story in exchange for monetary compensation.

It was great to hear that that Japanese Fisheries deputy got the ax. He actually claimed that the dolphins died a quick death never realizing that the brutal slaughter was on film. Then they clipped his hair and discovered mercury is in his system. HA!

Hopefully, we all stop paying to see dolphins leap out of the water in captivity. Let them be free and stop going to Disney Sea and all the other places that hold them.

Medical Tourism???who thought that one up.

    I got this from Wikipedia:

Spa towns and sanitariums may be considered an early form of medical tourism. In eighteenth century England, for example, patients visited spas because they were places with supposedly health-giving mineral waters, treating diseases from gout to liver disorders and bronchitis.[3]

The actual term came from travel agencies, but I don't know when. I have a cousin who routinely travels to thailand for treatment and a brother who went to Brazil for medical treatment. So far, I'm satisfied with what I get in Japan.

You would never want 100% of all medical students graduating, would you, from a medical school.

Once you've entered medical school, barring a mental breakdown, you are pretty much guaranteed graduating. Since we pay 9/10 of their education, I'd say, "YES" we want them all to graduate.

Funnily enough, we had a Nova assistant trainer who dropped out of medical school after three years.

    Work is for suckers.

Find ways to make money without working like renting out a room in your house as a bed and breakfast or owning a parking lot or laundromat.

Japanese have no more money to waist on fake teachers. Get real.

Speaking of fake teachers ... Ah, I don't want to waste my time.

I agree hiring teachers with degrees weeds out the trash, but please do not start on about how eikaiwa teachers in Japan are intellectual upper-class professionals. Those are at the university.

I had a friend who had worked at Nova and then got a masters degree in English or whatever and became a university teacher. He said that he was shocked at how far superior the Nova teachers were in comparison to the university teachers. I thought about it and realized that at Nova, there were tons of fascinating teachers despite the few bad apples. Management pushed them to generate role play ideas and they produced great stuff most of the time. My image of a university teacher is someone who works in isolation. He may read a lot, but he doesn't often get to hear the laughter coming from another classroom which pushed so many at Nova to get better.

This debate reminds of a little of the rivalry between the allegedly skilled Salieri and the raw and "unskilled" Mozart.

Don't overestimate university teachers and don't underestimate eikaiwa teachers.

Ummm....exactly half are above average and exactly half are below.

No. You are talking about the "median" which is used to offset outliers. It gives us a better idea of central tendency than does "average" or "mean".

Does anyone remember a show called "Oregon Kara Ai" ("オレゴンから愛") that aired on Fuji TV in the 1980's?

Never saw it, but there is a coffee shop nearby named "Oregon" and I've been informed that it is named for the tv show.

Newhart and Twin Peaks are my favorites.

Way to go Jon Heese! Being a canuck, I'm proud of you!

Hey, me too. I am proud of people born within 2,000 km or so of me and who went to similar schools and like ice hockey and also moved to Japan.

His website's name is hilarious: aishiterutsukuba

I want my kids to be able to get dual citizenship as I anticipate some advantage when choosing a university and I would encourage them to work a little before going to school so I think they'll be starting university around 20 or 21. This is when, under the current system, they would have to choose one country or another and I don't like that. Also, when they graduate, I would hope there would be no barriers when they choose which country they want to work in.
