Yesssssss, as an Asia Specialist, the Pentagon Papers was one of the most significant pieces to come out in the latter half of the 20th Century. It is the classic "tatemae vs. honne", the "overt vs. covert" aspect of US Foreign Policy in Asia. Bay of Tonkin and Col. Applegate was significant after reading it for at least 5 times. The modus operandi, the logic embedded were invaluable to my studies. Nothing makes sense w/out highest quality info.

I have been told this flat out in the States, but things get weird as it approaches Tokyo.

If Japan is that important as an ally, kill the 2006 US Bases Agreement, and renegotiate. It won't happen because a major reason Japan is important to the US is because of the bases. Whatever agreement that can be engendered after the bases is secondary.

    To Tkoind2,

I don't know how much you have studied this, but whatever "threat" the PRC poses, the Clinton Administation's policies were instrumental in causing the present day results - economic and political. I also know why, but that is another story.

Whatever threat the PRC poses, they are the creation of the Clinton Administration in the 1990's. Many of the modern weaponry they have developed have been augmented by the technology provided to the PRC by the Clinton Administration and allies.

Pretty easy to resolve. Immigration officials should give her a temporary visa w/ strong restrictions. She can only conduct her business as scheduled, then leave. After she has no legal clouds such as a legal probation, the regular visa can be reinstated.

    She is one wild female.

    To Aisan,

Interesting analysis of the region. I can add that the winds in the air is very similar to the Fall of 1995. No one knows the future, but I believe the next 12-15 months could be very exciting.

What a person sees in that picture is the culmination of over 50 years of effort in the industrial sector, starting w/ the transistor manufactured and made famous by Sony. Japan has come a loooooong way since those days.

At least for the next 15 months, great caution needs to be applied when international relations are concerned. Example: a closet fascist Japanese could hire a Japanese fishing crew whose Capt. is heavily in gambling debt to go to the coast of the PRC, and intentionally ram ships to cause an international incident. The PRC Govt. would have to prosecute, the Japanese Govt. would have to defend the fishing crew. The fascist cashes in on stock/currency volatility, the Capt. has his gambling debt forgiven and given some cash. For very little money, international incidents can be implemented. Third party manipulations is more common than suspected.

I don't know about this rumor of the Kano Sisters being guys. When Mika Kano was younger, she was noticed outside Japan. This link may explain some of the problems they have:

"Kyoko: If you're asking about plastic surgery: Our feeling is that it's not a bad thing if it makes you feel better about yourself. But in Japan, there is still a strong stigma against it. So we don't want to say whether we have or haven't had any, although I realize that will make you think we have."

As far as having male roots, it is very hard to get on the following list if one is a guy:

    "Playboy-Japan's 100 Sexiest Asian Women [April 2006] Sexiest --> Playboy Missing: * #2 Hitomi Kuroki * #4 Sugimoto Aya * #5 Lin Chiling * #6 Misaki Ito * #7 Ryoko Yonekura * #8 Jeon Do-yeon * #9 Park Sol-mi * #10 Mika Kano *"

I did not know that to have a voluptuous body is not considered appropriate in conservative female circles in Japan, but found out from info received from FujiSankei News - I was surprised.

I am a believer of SMAP's popularity. Ask around females ages 25-40 (approx.). I was talking to a Japanese salesperson, and SMAP came up - her face lit up like a supernova - definitely a fan.

I remember I saw by chance a studio clip of Mika Kano when she was in her twenties. She is possibly the only one from Japan who could do the Nissan GTR commercial internationally - she had the "muscle car" race queen look. One of the clips was her at a train station in white hot pants strolling, she looked fast.

The timing of this is beautiful..... a couple days before the DPJ election. The big question is, who is the mastermind behind this scheme, and did the Capt. of the fishing boat get something for his "adventure"??

    To Richard_III,

I read the Asahi interview - very possible only because I know what it takes to be Sec Gen of the LDP somewhat. What former Sec Gen Ozawa is advocating reminds me of former Pres. Reagan - decentralization and the line item veto. In this situation, he is going to give regions a lump sum w/out strings (the ultimate line item veto in a convoluted way). It is plausible to find the additional revenues IF implemented w/ forethought and decisiveness. I do understand him at the macro level.

What seems odd is the 4 investigations into former Sec Gen Ozawa's scandal, but no conclusion. The prosecutors did not indict, and now, a layperson group will investigate - it is odd, but I am not too familiar w/ the case.

The irony, at least from what I know prior to the 1960's, is that it was this form of influence peddling that was used to get Japan's economy to be 2nd in the world. The "money talks, bs walks" was prevalent since the end of the SCAP Occupation. It did work, but may be unseemly to an affluent society.

    To Klein2,

" "full sovereignty for Japan" You're slipping Apec. Your facade is cracking."

Please elaborate.... I'm talking about foreign policy, not necessarily about domestic issues per se. When I say ""full sovereignty", I am discussing the need for former Sec Gen Ozawa to implement policies w/out external obstacles. He does see a need to maintain an alliance w/ the US, but not to the degree which would hamper policies. Is that what you are referring to?

The guy is advocating full sovereignty for Japan - I would imagine the US will react one way or another. A clue - former PM Hashimoto and his incredible problems.

I don't want to hog this thread, but I can give some insight into Japanese politics. Around the time former PM Hatoyama took office,, someone in Japan came to the US West Coast, and had to give me info on former FM Kawaguchi, who was pivotal in the Koizumi Cabinet in negotiating the 2006 US Base Agreement. Futenma is like, the Twilight Zone.
