I don't know of an Israeli connection to this, but there are Israeli diesel subs in Vietnam as we speak. Those subs are state of the art.

    To OssanAmerica:

This is pretty basic stuff - ROK Po Hang class ship went down, no early warning and probably little or no transmission records. Speed of sinking connotes point blank firing, no warning again. No prior sonar detection. ROK High Command stunned, no clear explanation for months, no knowledge or evidence of the DPRK capable of pulling this stunt. The delayed verdict points to complete surprise. The previous engagements were predictable and understandable. I am pointing out that this is an unusual incident, and finding torpedo debris is not "conclusive" evidence. Sec. Clinton, being an established corporate attorney, knows the evidence is circumstantial. I would imagine the US is highly motivated to get DPRK at this point, so any evidence is acceptable.

The answers you seek is somewhat available on military forums (some are personally experienced on the sonar), and speculation is rife - no obvious conclusion.

The US must present clear and conclusive evidence that the DPRK has a sub capable of bypassing PHS-32 sonar technically, not the lucky shot from several thousand yards. I am getting the impression that if it was a torpedo, it was shot at point blank range - this still has to be confirmed.

If they are going to take it to the UN, a better argument would be that the DPRK have weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

From what I read, the ROK would not touch the countries that have subs that can bypass the PHS-32 sonar.

However, there are wild theories - there are subs in the region that CAN attack undetected, but they are all not of DPRK origin.

As far as evidence, it is circumstantial - subs were seen in the area, DPRK does have torpedoes. However, the sunk ship never knew the sub was attacking - that is some feat for a developing country.

    My 2cents:

If ROK has only torpedo debris from the sinking, they better research this more. If you believe that a sub got past an anti-sub equipped corvette, Po Hang class w/ PHS-32 sonar, you better go to military forums to see what the experienced guys say - highly improbable, questionable that the sub got a point blank shot on the ship. There isn't conclusive evidence, but the US is highly motivated to take it to the UN.

You see, PM Hatoyama could not deliver on his promise, so he may be very inclined to make a fighter purchase so that Okinawans would have a chance to better their economic situation by procuring YuriOtani's Typhoon EuroFighter.

I don't see this episode about Futenma as being a "waste". The negotiations was an incredible peek into US/Japan relations, and the DPJ is now up to speed on the base issue - 2006 Agreement is very important to the US Govt. DPJ did not know how important these bases are to the US, but do now.

For the Okinawans, this is a good time to take stock of the situation, and move aggressively on securing an industry that provides jobs. Futenma may be relocated, but the economy must be developed/modernized. The goal is to somehow meet the standards on the main islands even w/ the presence of noisy bases - manufacturing? Typhoon EuroFighter - it may be a refreshing change to deal w/ European industries for a change. A refreshing change is needed.

Please re-read your post - you are referring to "unconventional ASW" - operative term: "Chinese sub". There is a sophisticated "mindgame" being implemented in this corner of the world. If you have the clearance, research the major, MAJOR military technology transfers certain parties gave the PRC during the Clinton Administration in the mid-1990's. For your eyes only, what subs in the world could get past PHS-32-sonar-Netherlands? There is more to this than military hardware - politics and economics is also involved.

    To MartinLee:

You brought up that issue about the "timing" of this incident - the sinking occurred on the heels of Ms. Kim Yu Na winning the Olympic Gold Medal in figure skating, and ROK w/ about to go into national celebration. The sinking killed the celebrations, and there are groups, including in DPRK, who would do anything to deprive the ROK any joy. I found the timing odd. Then, the long delayed verdict of the sinking, where one can infer that the sinking conveyed no early warning or records - thus, the need to search for the torpedo debris. There is a smell to the incident, not b/c of skulduggery, but that this was not conventional underwater warfare, but something else. I could get more if allowed to go over the investigation, but I am somewhat "pinned down" here on the US West Coast. Very likely my interventions in the late 1990's in Asia.

If one reads past declassified transcripts of military action, accurate analysis questioning the conclusions are many times overridden for political expediency - many times the analysis eventually was proven correct.

    To OssanAmerica:

Please read my post for the last couple days, and look at details of links. The analysis depends on what you have been trained for - an attorney can find an argument for either case, whereas analysis of this kind requires regional expertise.

    To Sfjp330:

"They weren't caught on the spot, but with all evidence in hand, it shows this is quite close to an iron-clad case."

That statement is a problem in the analysis - "They weren't caught on the spot...."

Why were they not caught on the spot?, this was an anti-submarine equipped corvette. That fact alone has not been answered, as well as other issues.

"The investigation was done not just by SKorea but by the US and others, and the evidence is pretty clear cut."

The problem is, the investigation is not "clear cut", but contradictory. As you know, there are analysts, as well as analysts' analysts, then guys like Adm. Blair - it is levels of brainpower. Watch the movie,"Tomorrow Never Dies", where the British PM decided to commit ships for political reasons. No one says it is a conspiracy, but rather, the evidence does not support the conclusions of the "investigation".
