I think someone from the Meteorological Center should go to the Diet and demonstrate the strength of the earthquake. Bring in a cardtable, and let someone hit it as hard as possible w/ a hammer - this would represent a 7.0 Mag earthquake. Next, get a 20 pound sledgehammer, and slam that same table w/ it. The difference is the difference between the 2 earthquakes.

Addendum:
I should add that a 9.0 Mag earthquake is possibly 100TIMES more powerful than a 7.0 Mag earthquake. A 9.0 Mag earthquake is at least several times stronger than a 8.0 Mag earthquake. Not just a notch stronger.

Who knows what will happen legally, but if you ask around, very few coastal reactors in the world could survive after a 9.0 quake, significant tsunami. This crisis is "unprecedented", and the Japanese legal system will probably take that into consideration.

The situation is horrible, but the out of control reactors are being cooled for shutdown. A complete meltdown is very unlikely now.

I don't want to brag, but I called it. I knew that TEPCO would bring under control the reactors, after power was restored to the Control Rooms, and reasonable control was still operational. He comes from the "old school - Japan, Inc. If he did his job correctly before the disaster, his personnel he worked w/ would "get the job done", even if he is not able. After TEPCO went into the Control Rooms, the critical situation systematically was downgraded hour by hour. The present non-critical problems can be attributed to TEPCO’s president, Masataka Shimizu. His team is getting the job done - bravo.

The IHA should advise to have these situations not photographed publicly. Protocols should be adhered to since this photo can be interpreted as a political act. This opens up the Empress to greet other female foreign ministers in this way or it may be interpreted as a diplomatic slight. This is an error on the part of the IHA to have the photo publicly shown - in fact, should not be photographed.

I did extensive, exhaustive research on earthquakes during the Koizumi Period, and fundamentally, the series from Klein2 is incisive reporting. Klein2 clearly understands the workings of the physical world in contrast to the "service industry". It is the scale of the damage that results in someone having to take blame - TEPCO Pres. is facing the same situation the Director of FEMA faced during the Katrina Disaster around New Orleans. Both were unprecedented disasters, but someone usually takes the fall.
For readers of JT, those who need to understand the disaster better, Klein2 has laid out a vital aspect of the situation.

The pump that would significantly reduce the contamination volume of the water is the one that filters radioactive non-soluble particles. That pump has yet to be reported - would it be reported in the news?

Tokyo governor Ishihara was greatly helped by the Quake - in a crisis, people want stability. Anyone new would be stumbling around for a few months getting settled. Also, Tokyo governor Ishihara has political "pull" being active sooooo long. Many owes him favors, he can call construction firms to help out in the disaster area, he can readily handle logistics and supplies if TEPCO needs things. He's lucky, and fate gave him another term to allow him to help out.

To actually experience the 7.4 Mag would be different than my perspective. I have pored over numerous plate maps and calculated probable flash points at points of pressure, but there are tooooo many variables to predict earthquakes. I can only post those changes occurring at the macro level. Great pressure has been relieved, but how that affects other plates, and how the plates drift is unknown. Only those lucky enough to have a unique dog that can sense an earthquake can be safer.
Those that survived the Tsunami b/c they had a 10 minute warning can attribute their lives to the work PM Koizumi and Cabinet undertook - it paid off.
