    Addendum:

To understand what is occurring, one would have to know the real US Foreign Policy, which I do not believe PM Kan knows.

The article is flawed. They are the Self Defense Forces. They are not a "military", the US wants the JSDF to become a "military", pushing for collective defense as a first step. This is a politicized article.

Culture and history are sooooo different between the US and Japan. However, analyst can try to find equivalents. The only comparisons that can be ventured w/ the Japanese Royal Family would be groups like the: American Daughters of the Revolution; descendants of the signers of the US Constitution, Declaration of Independence; descendants of Puritans and Pilgrims. Not an exact comparison.

The Control Rooms have power and partial functionality. The situation is a heck of lot better than several days ago.

Japan has high technology, and they WILL bring this to bear on the problems.

Just the use of industrial filtering pumps of high radioactive water of non-soluble particles will not only greatly reduce the radiation in the water, but the particles filtered would not even contaminate the sea floor. Things can be done.

I have been reading news sources, and some well established sources are degrading their "credibility" w/ emotion ladened articles based on fear. Strange.....

Relax, Japan is probably the most sensitive to environmental degradation than most. However, the reactor crisis is calling all the shots, and TEPCO is reacting to problems as they occur.

Gov. Ishihara is going to get re-elected - he is keeping Tokyo stable and provides business a good situation to conduct business.

A last stop gap action would be to use the "mud" they use for oil rigs which solidifies in saltwater. It would slow the leak, but may not stop it.

As far as the protection from radioactive water, they need to get a supplier of fishermen s' gear to get hip boots and rubber overcoats. Logistics must be a nightmare.

Too many problems may be aggravating the situation at this point.

Those that are critical of the TEPCO President most likely will see what they wish. He will most likely have to resign, but not for incompetence, not for taking sick, not for solving the horrible problems. He may resign for a different reason.

    To Bogart,

Let's just say that if he is as good a President of TEPCO, even if he is not at the nuclear plants, the personnel will methodically knock out the problems one by one until only the damage that cannot be addressed remains. He is not the "head" of the company, but something else.

    To Taj,

"@Beer99, Please look up the meaning of amakudari. Masataka Shimizu joined Tepco in 1968, right out of university."

Japanese Corporations are different from, say, US Corporations. There isn't the polarity between management and workers as you clearly showed. The more traditional Corporations do hire graduates, and many still stay until retirement - the famous seniority based lifelong employment in Japan, salient feature of "Japan, Inc.". It is a common feature of US observers of Japan to overlay the US model of polarity between management and workers, commonly refered to the management/union polarity.

The head of TEPCO may not be a saint, but his function and responsibilities are different than his US counterpart. I feel Masataka Shimizu, president of Tokyo Electric Power Co., should be allowed to take time off while those w/ the expertise to address the pressing problems at the nuclear plant. The quake and tsunami were unprecedented, and should be seen from that perspective.

I've read just about every significant book on how Japanese Corporations are run, and TEPCO is probably a model example. Once they set up in the Control Room, they will methodically start knocking out the problem one by one in a relentless manner - they are amazing w/ machines.

This talk of international experts coming in seems impractical - they would need to take a crash course in Japanese to make heads or tails of the instrumentation and manuals. Also, w/ the hydrogen pressure explosions may have rendered some of the instrumentation sensors inaccurate. They just got into the Control Rooms w/ power, so the situation is still disorganized. Some of those technicians are probably crapping in their pants looking at the conditions they are working in.

In the tradition of APEC, power use coordination should be non-binding and consensus oriented because some people CANNOT do it due to specfic job requirements. If the vast majority cooperates, it is a "go".

Although I don't know how the power grid is setup, cooperation from the populace and coordination among industries would ease power consumption. Industries can front load all administrative work as usual, while moving power intensive operations between midnight to 7am. Industries that need to operate during the day should coordinate hours determined by power consumption - one company that uses alot of power would work one part of the day, another would agree to use a different period. The populace would agree to shut off heavy electrical use after a certain hour - say after midnight. Cooperation and coordination is the hallmark of efficient use of resources.

Did someone bring up bio floating platforms? Massive, absolutely massive floating platforms w/ wind turbines and solar panels, etc., all producing veggies.

    To YongYang,

After all the commotions ebbs down, perhaps you could visit a nuclear reactor to see if the instrumentation is in only Japanese. Or, perhaps someone else can, like a reporter. I seriously doubt that the instrumentations is not almost all in Japanese.
