I don't know about the language on the GE reactor, but I have received equipment written in non-English, and I changed all labels to English - ease of use.

    To YongYang,

The other is from Toshiba. Anyway, are you saying that the GE reactor has everything in English, even when ONLY Japanese will be working w/ it predominantly? That would seem odd.

Correct me if wrong, but I believe all instrumentations and manuals are in Japanese. Some manuals may have multilingual translations, but the reactors are Japanese specific in modifications. I would think a foreign team coming in to the situation would have to learn Japanese very quickly, and re-label all the instruments. That would probably take weeks?

    To Thepro,

"thepro at 11:57 AM JST - 27th March

TEPCO may be sitting on a "radioactive gold mine"

Why do you keep saying these things? You're so odd"

This type of thinking is obsolete in the US. This is a thinking from another era, specifically GHQ. If you are in a crummy situation, can people rig something up to emulate something. The old timers in Japan probably can see the past in my posts.

Government spokesman Yukio Edano may be missing the silver lining to this disaster. TEPCO may be sitting on a "radioactive gold mine". W/ the data and analysis of structural and process impairment from a 9.0 Mag and Tsunami, they would have the invaluable info to make better nuclear reactors - strong containment is important, but more important, how and where to make the containment stronger. This situation is good since they have two different reactors to compare - Toshiba and GE. Comparisons would be incredible. Obviously, Toshiba has the most to gain since they would be able to make a stronger, safer reactor. A reactor that can resist a 9.0 Mag and tall Tsunami would be very attractive to say, island countries like Indonesia? Billions, trillions of Yen always attract my interests.

I am not downplaying the effects and deaths involved w/ the disaster, but TEPCO could? put the exclusive info to good use in protecting future projects.

Has ANY country experienced a 9.0 Mag earthquake and the ensuing high tsunami damage to their nuclear reactors? If not, the data and procedures TEPCO is collecting and analyzing is exclusive to them - that info would be invaluable if NO ONE has it. Interesting.

Could've, should've, would've - it's just impossible to anticipate an unprecedented disaster. If one looks at the sitution, the area was hit w/ TWO Unprecedented Disasters - a 9.0Mag earthquake and a 14-23 meter Tsunami. I believe TEPCO was prepared for a 8.0 Mag earthquake w/ a lower Tsunami. If not for the Tsunami, the problems and deaths would have been much, much lower. A 9.0 Mag earthquake, if located correctly, would probably crack the containment wall in any country, more so than TEPCO reactors. It is these kinds of disasters that have lead to better safeguards in the past, and this disaster will be studied by nuclear reactor experts for years in the future. Trial and error is the history of technology.

"...or in the false belief that table salt protects against radiation illness."

Perhaps they bought salt because many retail salts contain "iodide" which treats the thyroid gland.

If one looks at history, India can win if they can have a strong defense, but ride up the economic elevator w/ the PRC. An adversarial relationship would only weaken both parties. U.S. politician Sarah Palin is advocating US Foreign Policy, as she should.

Some people may be underestimating the reconstruction phase of the area. Aside from the nuclear reactor area, Japan can move much more quickly than conventional wisdom. The PRC is constructing whole modern cities w/in a decade - if the motivation exists, mountains can be moved. Actually, given the degree of destruction, it would be possibly better to have a master plan for a completely new "megapolis" region. The advantage of the situation is that, the area is like a clean slate, where any new technologies can be deployed. It is a chance for Japan to showcase how to build a new region from scratch. Is the glass half full or half empty?

"....Japan is the ONLY nation that have this system rigged through out the nation in such a very tight web."

The technological upgrade to the monitoring system is a lasting legacy of PM Koizumi and his Cabinet.

The Japanese Govt. and all businesses and services should ALL start using copy proof numbered identifier, so that all these lines can be eliminated. Everyone would be given a number to identify their place in line, then they can do other important things while waiting for the number to be called. Those that miss their place in line should be given priority the next day. This is a cheap, efficient way to handle this horrible situation.

Snow can go either way. If the person is not seriously injured, but trapped, melted snow would allow drinkable water, thus prolonging survivablity. The negative is hampered search, and the cold temperature, especially if injured. Drinkable water is a plus.

"Not to mention that experience is zero while the United States has used stealth fighters in actual combat since 1989.

The F15, as in this encounter, has shown that it can in the near term handle incursions into Japanese airspace. The US stealth fighters history is weak, and that is why I advise the JASDF to procure a minimum number of F35, supplement the F15 w/ the silent Eagle and the Typhoon Eurofighter.

    To Toguro,

    "EP-3E ARIES

The land-based EP-3E ARIES [Airborne Reconnaissance Integrated Electronics System] Aircraft provides the capability to detect and exploit tactically significant electronic signals and communication Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) information to the appropriate Battle Group Commanders. The EP-3E ARIES II provides near real-time tactical electronic reconnaissance capability for Battle Group indications and warnings, targeting, suppression of enemy air defenses, and strike sorties. The small force of EP-3E electronic warfare and reconnaissance aircraft is in constant demand by fleet and theater commanders worldwide. Forward deployed to meet critical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance collection requirements, EP-3Es detect, interpret and report tactically significant communication and radar signals. With sensitive receivers and high-gain dish antennas, the EP-3E can exploit a wide range of electronic emissions from deep within enemy territory. (source: global security.org)"

Are we talking about this plane? Believe me, they needed this technology for their "spy planes". I know them, and they WILL incorporate the technology.

This situation is insane..... those 2 spy planes have probably incorporated the technology acquired from that downed US spy plane where a PRC pilot went down crashing into it. JSDF will increasingly face US military technology as the PRC becomes more assertive.

I've studied this, and the PRC equated Taiwan/ROC as the exact equivalent to Cuba (see Cuban Missile Crisis).
