Sorry, correction, ignore the last bit, you didn't say the current government is a Marxist state. I take that bit back! The rest stands.

So now they get punished because they didn't want the country to turn into a joke of a Marxist state.

No, they get punished because they ran a network of concentration camps and detention centres where they systematically used barbaric torture, rape, before disappearing people, often by throwing them out of aeroplanes. They also stole an unknown number of children and newborn babies, before disappearing the parents. The total number of disappeared is estimated at between 9000 and 30000. These have been judged crimes against humanity, and those responsible are being called to account for what happened. This is not out of vengeance, this is out of the need for justice, and closure for the tens of thousands of victims, including all those children who, as adults have had to deal with finding out what the people they knew of as their natural parents were responsible for.

And as for calling the current Argentine government a Marxist state, now that is truly a joke.

Tessa, that was very brave to put that out. I admire you for it. I think it's also very helpful to share it, and hopefully a lot of well-meaning people who haven't really thought things through enough will examine their motives and their commitment before giving vulnerable people hope and then just dropping them. It makes me think of things a friend of mine told me of her own experiences in care, and I've watched the way she treats other people utterly and totally respectfully, and handles every relationship with the greatest care. She's actually my role model in so many ways, and reading your post made me understand even better why being consistent is so important. In fact, I've tried to learn from her, and whenever I've come across vulnerable children in the school system here, I've tried to give them a spark of self-belief, and a little weekly dose of positiveness.

The concert was wonderful, of the sort you don't expect to just come across in such an attractive venue. That's the first time I've ever felt Christmassy in Japan. Finland is a very musical place and Finnish singing is just wonderful,

Whoops, I meant international laughing stock. Though quite a few Japanese of sound mind are laughing too.

In not much more than a decade, China will itself begin confronting its own aging society and will most likely turn into a net importer at a time when Japan's population will have peaked and begun its return towards a relatively younger economy.

Um, Laguna, I think you're being just a bit over-optimistic on Japan's behalf there. Most projections I've seen show the demographic crisis biting hardest 40 years up the road.If it was just 10 years, everyone here could just batten down the hatches and ride it out, couldn't they?

I thought the article was thought-provoking, though the joke about the finance minister was an easy crack. If only it were that simple. Japan's political system, finance ministers included, has turned the country into a national laughing stock. Don't think the long term repercussions of that are too rosy for Japan. Foreign governments and investors might act for their own quick, short-term advantage (speculation if there are any quick pickings to be had), but being an ungovernable country doesn't generally do wonders for the economy over the long term. Ask Bob Mugabe down in Zimbabwe.

“Those of us who work, who are not involved with the (drug) traffic, we have nothing to fear,” said the man, who didn’t want to be identified for fear of retaliation, because he wasn’t sure law enforcement would be able to hold on. Am I reading that statement right? It does not seem to make sense.

What he's saying is that he doesn't know if the police operation would be successful, so if the gangs win this round and head back, he could be sure of a terrifying, agonizing torture and death. He's therefore afraid of being identified for saying what he thinks.

The way people generally do it in Japan, I haven't a clue why it should even be considered in the category of manners. Is talking on the train bad manners? Totally agree that Japan tops the list for anal attitudes every time, while so many gross and offensive things - pig-like grunt every twenty seconds while aspirating snot, sneezing all over everyone else, jerking epileptically into everyone around while sleeping standing, parking massive bags that spill onto the next person's lap while sitting, falling asleep on strangers' shoulders, standing zombie-like in the middle of the train doorway when everyone's trying to get in and out, junior high students with massive sports bags dumped in the middle of a crowded carriage, men with splayed out legs taking up half the neighbouring seat, ear-splitting announcements every 45 seconds, 1 minute announcements of garbage that the useful bit could be said in 10 seconds ... and yet none of these figure in all those 'mind your manners' announcements which are plastered over every surface of every train.

Seriously good food, I went a couple of years ago. The real deal, they ship in a lot of ingredients, and no, I don't remember if guinea pig was on the menu, but what was there was GOOD! Peruvian food deserves to be up there with the best of them.

One would think that since it is Tokyo Sky Tree there would be a mascot which had something to do with trees. I'd prefer "L'il Treechan" or "Branch-chan". Now those would be superlative monikers.

    How about "Out-of-my-tree-Chan"?

“peace voyages”, what they call a Peace Boat

Talk about biased reporting. What's got the journalist's goat - the fact that lots of young Japanese feel idealistic and sign up to go on the Peace Boat to try and learn and understand more? Or maybe the fact that they listened to Fidel Castro has got him/her worked up.

If people have got their faculties, why shouldn't they go and listen and make up their own minds?

Personally I wouldn't go on the Peace Boat, but for many Japanese with limited experience of travel, it seems so much more valuable than many dumb things that so many spend their money on. Seems to me that the main opportunity is to get to meet so many people and hear so many points of view.

Still I'm not surprised that there are still so many Cold War fossils out there in media land.

As other posters have pointed out, cases like this are frequently reported on this site. Personally, sounds like many have said, this schoolgirl has most likely led a pretty abandoned childhood so far, and has little or no understanding of what she's doing or the consequences. While putting a newborn baby that has died in the garbage sounds horrible to me, too, it sounds to me more like a sign of a neglected mother who doesn't know any better and doesn't know where to turn to for support. Giving birth alone at home in your toilet while your family are out, waiting several hours and when the baby doesn't move, putting the body out with the rest of the domestic garbage, just sounds truly sad.

She's still getting special treatment. She gets to stay in a hotel, while anybody else would have to remain in a holding room, until a decision is reached.

No, common-and-garden undesirables get held at the privately run Narita detention centre, not a hotel, and have to pay 4 star hotel rates for the privelege. Happened to a friend of mine. After 2 days' detention he was relieved of $500 for the privelege and stuck, penniless on a plane to Seoul, where he was promptly detained.

I wish they would just stick her on a plane to Kuala Lumpur.

Just visited the website and it sucks. Aren't there any web professionals in this country? As for the 'corner' (what does a corner look like on a website) for 'foreigners', they must have it pretty well hidden. Come back again when you have something ready to show the public.

I wonder what sort of 'cutting-edge' 'eco-products' they are flogging? Be green, consume! If there's no info in this whole article on what the actual thing on offer is, don't think they're going to attract a whole lotta 'foreigners'. By the way, don't they realise that the web is a global thing. Talking in terms of foreigners on the web don't make sense to me.

One reason the media makes a big deal out of this is the belief that our failure to embrace The Next Big (Material) Thing drags down the whole economy. If we don’t buy, they say, the older generation will not follow suit, and there will be no trends. If there are no trends, companies will not make money. And if companies don’t make any money, budgets will be slashed, employees laid off, and the country will go bankrupt.

Those are really the "values" of the oyaji Japanese generation? "If we don't buy, there will be no trends"... Huh? If that is really the case, what a sad, shallow, airheaded bunch of losers! Vapid beyond my wildest imagination! The planet will be a whole lot better once they're out to grass. I don't think I wouldn't even waste my breath trying to argue those kind of arguments if I were a young Japanese.

Steal the car, take it apart, ship, reassemble. All the hands and money that requires sounds more expensive than just buying the car used. I don't think I trust this piece.

Me neither - it's the latest dangerous foreigner scare. I've seen shock horror reports on TV to that effect. I'm sure some theft is going on, and I would be mightily upset if it was my car, but I don't believe the scale of it is anything like they're painting it. Coming from London, vehicle theft was a monthly fact of life, but since I've been here, so far, I've never met anyone who's told me of having their car stolen. Added to that, anything that makes good money has to give its cut to the Yakuza, Second, knowing how #nal officials are are with any foreigner with any kind of documentation, if this is indeed happening, noone can convince me that it isn't happening with high-up payoffs to look the other way It's irritating to see this blown up into the latest in a line of devious foreigners doing dirty deeds. If I'm not mistaken, there were a load of raids on scrapyards around the country, about a month ago, and according to the official version, of all the raids carried out, a pretty small number of suspected thefts got caught in the net. There were some other, unrelated things they got a few people on, such as visa violations, or not having the correct permits, but basically, very little turned up. Meanwhile, the Yaks operate untouched out of offices for years, and not a thing happens.

The crime here isn't stolen cars, the crime here is the wasteful attitude most Japanese people have towards their cars.

Seconded! The exporters are following the ecological mantra - reduce (to parts), re-use (for many years) and re-cycle (break into parts and then make up into a "new" product). If Japanese would use their vehicles for another 100,000 kms, there wouldn't be such a need for the rest of the world to clean up after them. The stolen cars are an issue, but a much bigger crime is the wanton waste of precious resources on perfectly usable goods.

As for the criminal aspect of this, if this racket isn't giving it's cut to organised crime, it's not happening in Japan. They always get the furriners with their clean-ups, never go for those who allow it to happen in exchange for a cut.

I suggest the Chinese government "call on" the Japanese government to adopt more transparent labour laws.

It also seems the Japanese companies are miffed because the Chinese workers were allowed to strike. Apparently they believe the purpose of a repressive state apparatus is to repress, specially when it comes to the right of collective bargaining. Colonialist thinking, anyway. There's no reason why the Chinese government should do what Japanese companies tell them to, any more than the Japanese government should do what Chinese companies tell them to. And workers in both countries should be able to strike if they have a grievance
