Wow... opening a serious can of worms here. Why stop with just the Aso family ??? Toyota, Mitsubishi, etc rose to prominence and power also on the back of POW slave labor. I don't see any of those companies stepping forward to join the discussion do you ?

Spudman puleeze stop the silliness... "All" major auto manufacturers buidl both right nad left hand drives ... have for years. Best post in months, this one found right here at Japantoday

"Are you freakin serious ???" More evidence that Japan's markets remain closed to any sort of fair competition. For fiscal 2006 VW's North American sales for the year were 235,140 vehicles !!! Here in Japan a pathetic 1,872 cars in January ! That amounts to 20,000 a year... VW in the states does that in a month !!!Uhh, lemme guess, no right side drive ? Poor quality image ? Too big ? Wrong-wrong-wrong !!! The most succesful foreign auto makers to Japan were merely tossed a bone... this while Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi continue to flood other countries markets with their products. Is there no shame ??? It's this one way trade philosophy that has helped lead to the current global economic crisis. Japan continues to put other nation's people out of work with their selfish protected domestic markets. Wake the he77 up world... stop the Japanese from destroying your economy and way of life. Sorry, but I'm sure the Germans, French and Americans don't want to work for free like the Japanese will. Arghh !

    Excellent and straight on !

    VOR, you are precisely right...

"Many factors contributed to this supposed economic meltdown, the price for oil is one of them"

So was inflated housing in England, India's collapsing IT industry, and Chinas defective exports... they were all "symptoms"... as was the US housing market... OPEC released the virus though, make no mistake... again just look at the time lines, its very clear. Japan needs to stop saying the current economic situation is because of American housing or banking policies... it aint !

dontpanic, once again you avoid some obvious points... Korea is just across the sea, why isn't Japan flooded with Kias and Hyundais like in, which is a much further trip to sell mind you, the USA ???

As for Americans not understanding the market ??? Whats to understand ? Given a fair playing field Americans do quite nicely... Nike, McDonalds, Costco, Coach Bags etc !

Sorry, the only part of your posts making sense are the fact that Americans don't invest in Japan... and thats because market access is constantly being infringed upon ! This is not rue in the USA for Japanese cars... Obama will put a stop to this I believe... He's a midwest guy backed with millions of Detroit money. Japan is in for a seriously rude awakening... Yes, welcome "Change" !

Cripes you still don't get it...

"It may have started out with the Sub-prime loans"

Noooo ! It didn't start with sub prime loans, don't you get it ? Is the world still so lazy that it can't check two simple charts ? The first, oil prices for the past 2 years and second the stock market ! The data is clear, obvious, and irefutable ! The current economic crisis has nothing to do with bank loans ! Its about oil prices ! And as soon as you admit this, the quicker the road to recovery. The fact is, with oil currently at about $38 a barrel the global economic crisis should be short lived with little need to implement "long term" recovery packages. If major institutions would simply nut up and take the short term losses we could be back to business as usual within months... but then again this is capitalism we're talkin about, and theres money to be made at the expense of the US tax payer.

Yabits... don't be scared, enjoy the irony along with me if you will. I for one can afford my home mortgage. The state that I live in has seen no dramatic change in its housing industry... the dow jones though, hope you got out early and are ready to jump back in. Cause with oil and gas prices back to normal... well the US economy is about to take off, provided the Dems don't screw up the stimulus package. In short, stock prices are dirt cheap, as is gas... I see no reason the US can't bounce back with a vengence these next two years. The problem is gonna be the Japanese. The worlds second largest econmy is gonna be paralyzed because of its export oriented strategy. Face it, cars and electronics aint goin no-where ! Infrastructure is where the big moola will be. Bring it on Prez Obama !

Grafton, your post reeks of a driveby flame.

"I have a better solution, America should get it’s sticky fingers out of everybody else’s countries & go for the isolationist thing again. And wouldn’t that make the world a safer place to live."

Let me refresh yer memory... the last time the US entered into an "isolationist" stage it got dragged into WWII with the bombing of Pearl Harbor ! Now, for the other part of yer post...

"America should get it’s sticky fingers out of everybody else’s countries"

You might be interested to know that the vast number of "Fortune 500" companies are American. 8 of the worlds top 10 most recognizable brands
are American. And Americans contribute more than 60% of "all" the worlds charitable donations around the world... the world has spoken, they love the USA !

    "Who disagrees with this?"

"The fact that there was a total meltdown, starting with subprime loans"

Me maybe! Do some simple research and you will see I'm right. Bush visited Saudie Arabia in January of '08, his concern was skyrocketing oil prices, then at just over $90 a barrel. The Saudies gave Bush some lip service, sent him on his way, then made a token effort to lower prices... realised in February at 86$ a barrel... then something happened. Seems the OPEC nations got together and, well, err, umm... decided to screw the world !

Over the next few weeks and months oil prices slowly crept up... hovering around the magic $100 a barrel zone... which was achieved by mid March. Prices bounced around this level for a few weeks then bang... $100 plus was the norm as market forces failed to correct the problem. And in April both the Dow Jones Industrial and OPEC generated oil prices converged on two fronts. A consistent price of oil over $100 a barrel and the final peak of the Dow Jones at just over 13,000 ! The rest is history. The Dow Jones plummets as oil prices hit $137 a barrel, with talk of $160... and this is still in the late spring and early summer months. By July the Dow has lost 2,000 points and Americans are staying home for the summer... the damage is done ! It's a free fall from there as speculators can't sell fast enough, realising the summer is lost... this in turn affects the housing industry as summer is the peak season for home building. The Dow continues to fall and from September 8th to October 11 loses almost 3,000 points... it's at this time that the term "sub prime loan" is introduced to the world ! Those are the facts, the world economic crisis was triggered by high oil prices and OPEC's decision to manipulate supplies. Sorry of they don't mesh with many of you out there who simply want to blame the USA for everything. The charts and dates are all out there for those of you who wish to know the truth.

Nothing more than America bashing here. First, the Americans were hardly embarrased... they beat Japan didn't they ? The only thing affecting team USA then will be the same thing affecting them in the next tournement... Pro contracts ! The Americans will once again be saddled by the "don't you dare get hurt" bug hanging over their shoulders at every game. Other nations like Japan, Korea, Cuba will once again send players trying to secure MLB contracts... those teams are obviously the favorites ! Sorry, this is old news and everyone knows it... 'cept maybe the Japanese.

Good Idea Sarge, unfortunately GM already rules the roost there... having by-passed Japan years ago to set up factories and dealerships. GM commands a hefty 30% of the market share and led all foreign auto makers with 1.09 million cars sold last year. Toyota will have an uphill battle in the last remaining viable market for cars... something about left-over bitterness of WWII and Japans snobby arrogance evr since. I for one don't agree with that viewpoint... but then again, I'm not Chinese !

"The sub prime disaster was wholly a US problem. It spread world wide because capital markets cross borders. The US gets a lot of blame, but in this case it's justified."

I totally support this provision. There is way too much competition in the US today. Trade wars start when there is limited competition with countries trying to get in... that is not the situation in the US, which consistently ranks among the top 3 on the "Worlds most open markets" lists ! Nations like Japan (rank 22) have seriously damaged the US work force and economy by focusing too much attention on the US. They have basically over fished the waters and now can't understand why they are no longer welcome... get real ! As for the EU... reality check, this stimulus package is for American workers and the US economy... not for foreign nations to try and dig themselves out of their own selfmade economic problems. Obama said it clearly... stop blaming the US for all your troubles. Welcome to the world of "change ... hey you asked for it !
