Spending continues it's free fall and Japan has no-one to blame but themselves. The first thing this petty country needs to do is start buying more American made products. Start with agriculture ! I see no reason for Japan to be buying so much from China. That countries products have proven to be low quality nd full of chemicals and poisons. So why does Japan insist on jeopardizing the publics safety with such crap ? Japan does the same thing with meat products. Banning scientifically safe American beef for example. Japan instead will import pork from Canada. Beef from New zealand. What the hell for ? Just how much impact do these puny nations have on Japans export oriented economy. Wouldn't it be better in the long run for Japan to help the US economy, and in return their own, by doing more balanced business with the Americans ? I'll say the same thing for all those other nations out there that are whining about the American economy. "Hey" you don't like it ? Stop bitchin' and start buyin ! I guarantee Mcdonalds, coca cola, nike, microsoft, and levis aren't the only popular products available from the US of A !

"America hasnt been a financial leader for a long time"
Depends on how you define "financial leader". In terms of "we buy your junk"... yes, the USA is number one. And really now isn't that the root of all these flames being tossed around by the Europeans. The fact that they will no longer be able to sell their junk to Americans. And the possibility that the US may just now have good reason to insist on managed trade rather than open trade ? Here's an idea Medvedev, try buying "made in the USA" for a few years. Do your own country some good.

In general I like this overall ad campaign. Manners throughout Japan have steadily gone downhill since the economic bubble burst back in the 90's. Not sure if they are directly related but I have noticed the diff. Now if we can only get the platform staff to do more than just shove people onto the trains the whole riding experience may be more tolerable. Id also like to see JR staff do "walk throughs" during the off peak times to remind people to "hold" their bags in front of them or put them on the overhead racks. Reminders to shut off cell phones, sit closer, and turn down music would also be greatly appreciated... fat chance though eh !

"Police quoted the mother as saying she killed her son because she was stressed out."
"Stressed out" ? Anyone else wanna bet that this becomes the tag line of the year here in Japan ! Sad sad sad state of affairs. Japan has really hit rock bottom. The daily news consists of political gaffes, food scandals, and parents killing their infant children. Shameful !

"The Japanese economy is very sensitive to anything so the downfall in the USA is having an effect to a certain degree."
Yes ! And Japan has been warned for years to not put all its eggs into one basket. They should have diversified and, like so many other countries, stop counting on the American public to run their economies. Funny how nobody stops to consider how the trade imbalance the US has with every country hasnt effected the job markets in the states. When American companies move overseas or when businesses in the US buy foreign parts, it puts more Americans out of work. All that subprime nonsense is a indirect result of thousands of blue collar workers losing their jobs. Fact is you cannot get a bank loan without a job. The banks check your background very carefully. However, once you get your loan, and you lose your job, well there you go ! I see the same thing happening here in Japan. All these companys closing will send millions to the poor house ! Japan is in deep trouble and the worst is yet to come. The US will survive through mergers and acquasitions. Japan won't !

"We are talking about more than BSE here; we basically are talking about the spread of pathogens such as E.Coli, Salmonella, and even Anthrax (in which at least five people were exposed and confirmed having in the summer of 2000)!"
Chicken little has spoken ! Now my turn. Do any of you out there realise just how many tons of American beef are consumed every year ? The fact that Americans alone consume ton after ton and have been doing so for more than 200 years, yet not one "American" has contracted any of this BSE crap, and neither has anyone else around the world for that matter. Comments like, "five people were exposed and confirmed", is just laughable ! You are thousands of times more likely to be struck by lightning (7,000 a year) than you are to fall ill to bse, anthrax, or whatever. You chicken littles of the world, puleeze give it a rest !

Sorry, this story hasn't just "popped out of nowhere" ! In fact I recall a lot of posters criticising Ichiro way on back. Comments about his arrogance and uppity attitude were common place. Mods here at Japantoday chastised them for making light of the situation and revealing what a hard head Ichiro really is. Well, it seems "they" were right ! Too bad the vast majority of those handles are gone. Discussions here about baseball are virtually nonexistent.

Nothing "wal-mart" about Seiyu, which is the problem. If these guys want to save this chain my advice is to dump all the Japanese junk and start importing exclusively from the USA. Health and beauty, sports, music, and all the boxed and canned foods that wal-mart is known to sell. Turn the place into a down-scaled "Sony Plaza" and just sit back and reap the rewards. This really isn't difficult to understand, Japanese consumers have been hit with a poor economy, stagnant wages, and little hope for the future. Give em a break from all those high priced European labels that are just flooding into Japan. Take a hint from H and M !

"They're admitting nothing of the sort. They're stating that they're satisfied the safety measures put in place to ensure the nasty bits don't get through are adequate at last."
So what happened to Japan's policy of "all out banishment of US beef over any violation" ? Enjoy that crow pie Nippon, you've earned it.

How embarrasing has this whole American beef fiasco turned out for "market protecting" Japan ? One could argue that Japan had spent so much time harrassing the US over beef that the Chinese slipped in their poisonous products while no-one was looking ! Now Japan has to eat some major crow by admitting that US beef is completely safe and the products they havent been paying attention to out of China are toxic ! The consumer must be about to blow a gasket !

Japan best be careful about rooting for Obama, the guy is a staunch protectionist with eyes on securing American jobs over imports... bad news for Japan !

Once again the American's demonstrate the depth of their wallets. No other nation could handle this kind of banking crisis. Just look at how Japan muddled around for 15 years after their housing bubble burst. The Americans are about to turn this around in a week ! Amazing !

Japan's 40% self sufficiancy in food is it's achilles heel. While other nations produce what they want in their own backyard Japan must import. Subsequently Japanese consumers are stiffed out of their hard earned yen, which could be going toward other endeavors to alleviate the downward spiral in domestic spending. Viscious cycle, plain and simple !
