Maybe the silly boys are recognizing that it's silly to pay to chat. Now if you were a foreign "host," I mean private English teacher, the young ladies pay you, and chat. Even old guys like me!

There are some very positive sides to the J-environment. Visiting western Canada & USA recently, I was struck by the contrast with Japan - there are almost no commuters there on public transportation, not to mention walking or biking over there. The Japanese must have a lower carbon footprint in this regards. I personally never set foot in a car all week long, and usually bike on the weekends too. And I see numerous people doing the same. It's very rare to find adults like us in USA/Canada. Europe is also on our page.

Way to go Jon Heese! Being a canuck, I'm proud of you! About this posted comment: "from complaining about bureaucrats to being a bureaucrat himself is a big step." If you haven't yet understood the difference between the Bureaucrats & Elected Officials, it's time you hit the road. This is one of the first things you should learn about Japan. I don't know how people living in Japan can even make such uninformed comments. You have obviously learned nothing in your stay here.
Anyway, it's a great article about a cool dude. Way to go, Jon!

Having a 16-year-old boy going through this hell called J-high school, I can understand how this can happen. It's a terrible way to raise kids.

Homeland used to have such a warm, cozy feeling. Now it's suddenly transformed in a nasty word.

I love Japan, and a lot of prices are cheaper than Europe/USA/Canada. Of course some are more, especially transportation costs. But my family, who have traveled in countless countries, said nothing compares to the difficulty of traveling on Japanese trains, buses, and staying in Jp hotels. They needed so much help from us, their hosts. Japan is just not set up for foreign tourists. Can't do it easily without a guide.
But I suppose the Jp figure, "We need a guide in every country, why don't tourists get a guide here."
