Nobody kills themselves in seppuku. Look it up. You disembowel yourself, and someone else cuts your head off. This relieves the other person of responsibility, even though he was the one who killed you.

None of the items criticized here are traditional Japanese foods. Ramen, gyudon, and curry were popularized 150 years ago from China, the West, and India respectively. Processed foods far more recently of course.

What does any of this have to do with gastronomic pride? When we're talking about Japanese food being healthy, we're talking real traditional Japanese food like miso, grilled fish, pickles, and so on.

Sushi, while a luxury today, has been enjoyed by coastal Japanese for over a thousand years. Like bouillabaisse, it started out as the lowliest of foods for fishermen.

Toyota's getting a slap on the wrists by Japanese standards. The mass hysteria over Schindler's elevators is at least ten times overboard what Toyota's getting. Hypocrites.

Look at how Japan dealt with Schindler over the one single elevator incident. President had to fly over for a deep bow. Toyota's getting a slap on the wrists. Didn't fly over, didn't make an actual apology bow, didn't face the relatives of the entire family that died, etc.. Pretty deep hypocrisy here.

Not if they're blatantly lying about it. Many articles imply a suspect is not a Japanese national when he in fact is. Others suggest a suspect is a foreigner, when they are Zainichi Korean. And some simply assume that someone from another country is not a Japanese national (i.e. Japanese nationality is not determined by place of birth, but your ancestors).

Every woman needs to get a machete, and people need to gather with other people for mutual protection. They need to form machete militias to guard against roaming bands of criminals. Lastly, the Hatian army needs to set a curfew and shoot roaming bands of armed men on sight for looting.

Good point, the backlash is nowhere near as hysterical as the Japanese reaction over Schindler and countless other events. Pot calling the kettle black here.

And again, I personally think the US government overreacted to some extent. But to say they're targeting Toyota unfairly just ignores the fact that the Japanese government has been investigating Toyota too and the US government had no qualms about forcing Ford to recall in the past.

"ignorant of history" Hahahaha which history are we talking about here? They never taught history in Japan.

When they say Japanese students are getting dumber, what they really mean is they're becoming more like the Americans. And that's okay, not everybody can be good at math or reading. Society can't function when nobody is willing to work in construction and cleaning.

The Japanese government has been investigating Toyota over these same issues. Second, these issues have been around for years and Toyota even knew about two of them, having fixed them in new production cars but not telling anyone about it until now. Lastly, the US forced Ford to do a far more massive recall years back over safety issues.

Personally I think the government is overreacting, but Toyota HQ has on the other hand been resisting acknowledging and fixing these issue for years. But to the extent this is an issue about Japan, that's a small factor compared to the fact that this is about multiple multiple problems that have been purposely ignored and covered up.

Honda is issuing a safety recall, but you don't see the government getting in their face over it. That's because they recalled within a reasonable time frame after they found out about the problem, rather than covered it up.

They need to just meet halfway on this. Before work starts, be explicit on what everyone's responsibilities are and how to do them. If someone has to answer the phone, then yes that someone might have to be you. Making duties clear beforehand would surely smooth things out rather than give the appearance of being bossed around on the spot.

Now if someone is explained this clearly on orientation day and doesn't think it's for them, that's what the door is for. But it's not fair to spring too many random tasks onto someone if it's just the new guy having to do it.

Um, no family was killed over this recall. You're thinking of the other recall.

Fiat and Ford went through similar recall phases, and it took years to recover. That said, Fiat, Ford, and Toyota are far superior to their competitors who cannot fix their cars or address safety even with a recall. Consumers only care about fixable issues, not fundamental safety problems like a D or F crash safety rating you'll find in many cars.

Driving while calling 911 is usually an explicit exemption under the law. It is where I live.

On a side note, we know the driver was not a foreigner because they would have definitely emphasized this if he were.

Actually, we know for a fact the thief was Japanese because the article made no obligatory insinuation that he wasn't.

Exactly, this is about kidnapping and not even child custody. It's ironic that Japan wants our help on the North Korean abduction issue when they're the child kidnap capital of the world.

So no, Japan certainly cannot just brush this off. They're purposely harboring criminals who kidnapped children by every definition of the law where the crime occurred.

It's about time. Anyone having doubts only has to look at the Israeli military which has integrated this fairly well.

As one general put it, the people giving reasons against this have ulterior reasons - they simply hate gays.

I don't know why they do it, but in Japan the quality of printed materials is phenomenal. Must be expensive.

Wow, pretty raw deal. Husband dies in a rock climbing accident leaving her with two kids and an unopened izakaya financed by loans. I'm surprised Maki gets paid $50K a year considering how much revenue MM pulls in, plus having to commute and her mom having to buy tickets herself. Just goes to show you need to pull the strings to make the big money.

Wow, did YuriOtani really just say that?

I agree, and I don't think a lot of Japanese agree with their government's policy either. It's outdated, and is a dilemma for Japanese fathers as well.

The only dilemma Japan has is that if they respect a foreigner's father rights, it'll be ironic if they don't overturn their domestic policy (i.e. how Japanese divorces are handled). And that would be earth shattering for some people, however right and just it would be.
