Great, sounds like the Olympics is just making it worse by giving everyone a monetary reason to collect turf before cashing in during the games.

I've seen the same thing about dentists, they're decades behind and not very good. This is based on lots of doctors and people who've gone to both Japanese and the US. On the other hand, I've heard good things about other doctors.

7 years of dithering by Cheney and Bush on Afghanistan, what a joke. The depths of self-ignorance never fail to impress.

Good points actually, thieves are always looking for unattended locations. Broken Window phenomenon has nothing to do with social psychology, even though people sell it as such. In reality, crooks are thinking rationally about where to break in for the very reason that they're looking for a place that nobody is guarding or taking care of. The last thing they want is to be seen. This was true long before it was popularized in culture and given gimmicky names like Broken Window and touted by fake psychologists.

Wow, if those two quotes are accurate, Michelin is way more pompous than I thought. Very French attitude of "You cannot be a restaurant unless you bow down to us and play our game." Make no mistake, Michelin is the one making all these advances and threats. Like a stalker.

This has nothing to do with being judged by real customers. This has to do with the French mafia coming in under the guise of giving ratings but in reality telling them to play by their rules or get out of town.

Depends on the year, but this year's been good. Just saw K-20 and it's a lot of fun, and interestingly very well technically executed. They've really caught up in a lot of ways since the days of cheesy HK style production.

Almost anything by Kurosawa though is in a different league than your usual Western flick.

Ropes? They need to investigate this guy. Going at 2am alone is also pretty hard to believe. Sounds like he was off duty and corrupt.

Klein, you don't do this through a database. Even in the US it's always standard procedure when finding a body - especially in the case of foul play - and going through a list of people known to have locally gone missing in that time frame. There's a lot of ways they can go about it, but since in this case the body couldn't be ID's, DNA evidence was the only thing they could go on so they went to it first.

They don't use a comprehensive database, they simply go to the missing person's section and look through each file for a best guess match. That's why it came back so fast. Most of the time though, they try to ID the person which takes much longer. This is why a DNA match ironically happens much sooner when the body is totally decomposed. And they don't do a full DNA match, they do a quick DNA test of a small group of genes because they just need to narrow it down. If it goes to trial, then they'll do the full DNA match to prove it's 100.0% match.

This has nothing to do with Sakai. It's about police corruption, illegally leaking personal info to the press, and gross preferential treatment. Shame on you.

Exactly, Seoul-Kimpo is a huge difference over Narita-Incheon, 2 hours less is about right. From where I am, it's 15 minutes to Haneda, 1 hour 45 minutes to Narita. But that's from Kanagawa. From Shinagawa it's about 30 minutes difference. Narita's not a terrible choice, I just don't see why politicians are trying to stop Haneda's international expansion so that people will have no choice but to choose Narita.

Yeah, this is pretty messed up for the girl. First getting flashed, then getting 25 panties stolen by the officer she called. Now she can't trust anyone.

BTW read the article, it says his excuse for going to the bedroom was to make a private call to headquarters. If he had just taken 1 or 2, this would never have happened. Heck, he could have worn them the whole time and nobody would think of searching him out of sheer embarrassment.

Obviously the law isn't there trying to stop abuse by husbands. That's because the law applies to all husbands. If the mother is abusive, she will still get custody the vast majority of the time. And it's moot anyways considering we're talking about visitation rights, not abuse.

What's sad is most of this is really about beaurocracy because most Japanese feel this is a problem too.

The title "Narita vs Haneda" is really symbolic of how the issue is being played. But really, there's no reason both airports can't be fully utilized. The people really against Haneda are local officials with money lining their pockets. Their claims all boil down to "competition is bad" and tacit acknowledgement that Haneda is a way better location for an airport than Narita ever was. Narita's own history itself is lined with corruption and backroom deals.

I don't have a problem with Narita itself, I just don't see why we can't let Haneda prosper considering it's a way better location. It's already handling international flights, and given a fair choice almost everybody would use it. The practical reality however is Haneda doesn't have the capacity yet of Narita, and there isn't enough infrastructure to support that kind of traffic to and from the airpot. For that reason, Haneda is very high in demand with its limited slots, and people gladly pay double to fly from Haneda for flights like Korea. That's right, it costs double to fly to Korea from Haneda and people still pay it.

Where you are born has absolutely nothing to do with Japanese citizenship. It does play a part in determining US citizenship, but is irrelevant for Japan and dozens of other countries.

One of the children is a dual US-Japanese citizen, whether they like it or not. Japan recognizes dual citizenship for children under 20 - they simply require you to give one up after reaching adulthood. The more you know..

Finally, the irony is since Christopher and Noriko are still married under Japanese law he hasn't kidnapped his own children which would be the case in a divorce. People have successfully reverse-kidnapped their own children away from Japan, but it's pretty rare because you need the other passport.

To illustrate, I have a different date of registration for my marriage in the US and Japan. While Japan would recognize my US marriage for ordinary situations, it would not recognize my US marriage alone for the purpose of child custody, tax purposes, and other koseki-related issues. It is actually possible to exploit this loophole!

They still have homosexuality in Kabuki, in addition to new forms of theater today. People still look at shunga, though not universally as this article flippantly implies. By this logic, every Greek and Roman in classical times was a pedophile because some were. But the issue of harassment and sexual attitudes in Japan is a very important topic to bring up and explore in future articles.
