It's not a great form of government, but it's certainly better than the alternatives lol.
Don't conflate words here. There are two meanings to democracy, one meaning is mutually exclusive with a republic and the other is not. The question is clearly referring to the latter.
City states in Greece tried democracy to a large extent, where every law was voted on by everyone rather than representatives. In the same way, the various cantons of Switzerland operate more as a Democracy, whereas the union of all cantons is a Republic. This is also another case where they are not mutually exclusive. A notable example is that Hong Kong is not really Communist, even though it is ruled over by "Communists" (who are anything but).

The age of consent in most of Japan is way higher than most places, including most states in the USA. In most prefectures it is 20 years old. I only mention that since some people seem confused. That's right, sleeping with someone before their 20th birthday is illegal in most of Japan.

It comes down to two things. People are saying what they've been thinking, and the internet attracts people who think and want to say stupid things. This is a cyclical process that produces a new purified form of drivel. Every article about a puppy or the weather on Yahoo is followed by a march of comments blaming Obama or Bush and how every conspiracy theory is involved. lol

Children crying is normal, in fact if a child does not cry it usually means he's mentally retarded for life. What does crying have anything to do with child abuse? Stop trivializing a serious issue.

Correction: The company said the attack began when a user, whom it did not identify, noticed a security hole and repeatedly notified Twitter. Weeks after being ignored he demonstrated the flaw on Twitter itself, which finally forced a fix.

Agreed ben, lots of pipe smoking going on here. What's the deal with ridiculing the intellect of women who literally has two degrees more than you. Some inferiority complex.

The number of pages in your textbook is an excellent indicator of the quality of education. Just like the number of politicians in your legislature dictate the quality of your laws, and how much trash your country produces dictates your prosperity. Great to know how easy it is to solve these pressing issues!

I like how people will say let's not jump to conclusions and then declare the men innocent while making light of rape. Please choose one or the other.

Well as they admit, as long as they aren't turning in innocent people it sounds like they're doing typical bounty hunter work just in Japan. I.e. bringing in people who have outstanding warrants and on the run. It's another thing if they're enforcing the law arbitrarily or going after the wrong guy. I see this turning ugly though if as the article implies they're really just a backdoor for the police to break the law.

"I suppose the more males find communicating with females to be troublesome, the greater demand such items will enjoy" This quote doesn't make any sense at all. What does being unable to communicate have to do with men buying SM tools and vibrators? Sounds like the quote was taken out of context and talking about something entirely different.

smithinjapan do you know anything about Japanese law? Because that's not just common in Japan, it's common in a lot of countries as others have pointed out. Not that it's a good system or right, but don't act like you're surprised or that this is something unusual happening for this case.

calicat, they are behaving like a world power lol. You think the USSR, USA didn't pull stunts like that? They literally make China look like amateurs. China has great respect for the clout their rivals held and are only emulating their predecessors.

I can't wait until we get out of Japan and let them handle their own affairs. It's just a waste of money for nothing in return. They're not dumb, they'll build up their military and take care of themselves if we leave - the only difference is who pays for it and the constant whining.
It's sad, but this is just inevitable. China has the power to do whatever they want even when they're wrong. Kinda like Japan oh snap!

I'm for keeping smoke from non-smokers, but even pachinko parlors and love hotels? Pachinko's always filled with smoke, I'd think anybody already there today is okay with that. And in a hotel room, only you and your partner is there. How do they even enforce this? The hotel should be able to handle this just fine.

Looks like they weren't punished enough the first time around. Strap some fireworks to their balls.
In any case, these kids will probably not graduate anyways nor ever find a real job besides construction. After which they'll wear out and be homeless on the streets, where they can be viciously assaulted by the new generation of teens. Very poetic.
