this does not just happen in Japan, that's true..... but Kanji is definitely a way to have more illiterate so the power can still be held in certain people's hands (which usually are the same since ..ever!)

If cheaper and "natural" taste better why not. And it is not depending on the economy languishing ... it is just a matter of not wasting money! Anyway,I've never found tomatos/carrots/eggplants that taste like they are supposed to taste, even when expensive ones. @stevecpfc let me know when, I'll be your first customer!
