They have been slipping since the 80's.

No. You are quite wrong. U.S. automakers were very, very profitable during the 1990's. They were just very foolish with their money. Every M&A deal the Wall Street boys flashed before them, they bought. They could be on very sound footing, just like Toyota, except the Big 3 were run by a bunch of corrupt Freemasons who pissed everything away rather than investing in the long term health of the company.

$6 million dollars? A token PC gesture with money that could be better spent staffing prisons.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Supreme Court has given the Navy the green light to blast the hell out of the whales with active sonar. What will the green warriors do now? Harass a Japanese fishing fleet that kills clean or wave some signs at the dock before the submarines depart to scramble whale brains with massive bursts of torturous sonar. Green = gutless.

Nice job suppressing this apparent crime wave, media. Still, giving them pepper spray is only a half measure as it is not effective on people who are really drunk or screwed up on drugs. Better to also arm them with an electric stun gun. Or better yet, a real pistol. Considering Japan's gun laws, this would give the poor women a substantial advantage over the would be rapist.

A White House alternative would let the car companies take $25 billion in loans previously approved to develop fuel-efficient vehicles and use the money for more immediate needs. Congressional Democrats oppose the White House plan as shortsighted.

The $25 billion already approved by Congress was given as compensation to help meet higher fuel economy laws passed by the government. The vehicles that will be built with this money - compacts, subcompacts, hybrid, fuel cell and electric vehicles, make little or no profit for the Big 3 (as opposed to SUV's with a 25 - 35% profit margin). It makes no sense to force the companies to use this money as Congress initially intended when Ford and GM are probably heading into bankruptcy protection. One way or the other, they'll need to meet the new fuel economy laws anyway, the worst way would be to not be building cars in 2012.

The irony is that the President-elect of the United States has chosen as his chief of staff, a man who's father was a member of the murderous, terrorist Irgun. I can't imagine a U.S. President selecting a man for the same position who's father had been a Nazi. How this ties to Palestine is clear. The Palestinians can expect no help from Obama, World messiah, so they have no choice but to continue struggling -like Jews trapped in the Warsaw ghetto- until real help arrives. That help will certainly never come from the United States - not without a military coup anyway. So the rockets will continue to fire out of Gaza for the foreseeable future.

Everyone is missing the point, which is that the insurgents are willing to use abominable measures to terrify the Afghan population into submission. The worse the war goes, the less willing the locals will be to stick their necks out to support the fickle Western forces that are trying -weakly- to rebuild the country in a modern, Western mold.

More boots on the ground is not going to accomplish much more than they did in Vietnam. What is needed is a massive intelligence push which will allow the Western forces to act more effectively and decisively. For example, identifying Taliban-friendly Pakistani intelligence agents and politicians so that their families can be abducted and/or assassinated. Unfortunately, no Western intelligence has the resources -especially the language skills- to support such counter-terrorism in the region.

Anything that doesn't involve a pool, track or a boat is fine by me. I don't see why they have to limit the event to 28 sports. Let rich sports like golf and baseball buy an additional slot with outside media coverage and bump the number of sports up to 30. That way golf fanatics can watch the whole thing on a golf-only channel instead of getting to see only 20 minutes of from the official broadcaster.

Personally, I'd like to see softball come back. Let the tom boys have their chance to shine.

Just wish it had been a bit louder. No ear ringing sound this morning.

Perhaps that's because Townsend has lost most of his hearing due to overexposure to noise. He's trying to help out his fans by not wrecking their hearing too.

Obama's plan is some sort of forced national service for young people 16-25 years old. He'll probably sneak it in as a requirement for high school graduation and student loans. Obama will get his free labor to work on social programs like picking up garbage in the inner city and cleaning out old people's diapers at public nursing homes, but at the cost of turning a generation of young people against the government (even more effectively than drug laws have). So it will be a net gain for those who hate Socialism and social engineers like Obama.

Two pretty weak changes. No mention of reversing all of those infringements on the Constitution that the lefties were (rightly) screaming bloody murder about. Why not eliminate the executive order all together, seeing as it's not in the Constitution? How about repealing the War Powers Act? Change. Here is the change you'll see - more encroachment by the state.

Much ado about nothing. A victim-less crime. The U.S. had citizens shipping .50 caliber sniper rifles to Kosovar terrorists in violation of the Neutrality Act - a real crime - and none of those men were prosecuted.

"Liberal" democracy is a fraud and synonymous with corruption, mob rule, foreign meddling in internal affairs and zero accountability.

Yeltsin or Putin? 90% of Russians would still vote for Putin and for good reason - he looked out for the national interest rather than a personal or internationalist interest.

I guess I'm the first one to point this out, but Obama has just selected Rahm Emanuel as his chief of staff. Emanuel is, among other things, a Jewish Zionist and a former volunteer for the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces). Chances are Obama will pick similar characters for Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense. This means a repeat of the Clinton administration's Middle East policy, which was not friendly to Arabs.

The Arabs saw hope in Bush (after Clinton) and they were proven wrong. Now they have hope for Obama (after Bush) and they are about to be proven wrong again.

At the end of the day, Obama is just going to be another face on a recruiting poster for Hamas, Al Quaeda, the Muslim Brotherhood, etc.

Whatever comedy is centered around Obama will be focused in two areas.

First, harmless personal flaws such as his poor bowling skills. Sort of like when they would joke about Clinton's womanizing problem and his fast food addiction.

Second, the reaction of all of those white people in Washington to a black U.S. President, how he rules and how his family lives.

You won't see anything regarding Obama's wife hitting him with a rolling pin and spewing the racist invective of black liberation theology or anything else that has any criticism or mockery in it.

The big difference between the humor of the last 8 years and the next 4 to 8 will be the lack of malice in the humor toward Obama.

The thing is Toyota is still profitable, is still hiring and is still building new plants. And they don't require a multi-billion dollar bailout. Unfortunately the same can't be said of the American auto manufacturers who have been suffering massive losses and declining market share for the last 5 to 10 years.

The Palestinians made the mistake 8 years ago of thinking Bush would be more neutral than the Clinton Administration. He ended up being even worse for them -with the exception of his team's incompetence and unquestioning belief that democracy solves all problems (which boosted Hamas). I don't believe the Palestinians will make the same mistake with Obama. They'll wait for Obama to walk the talk this time around.
