Actually, it was twice. And let's try to shed too many tears for a team that had won 22 games straight in the Olympics before Japan but them down.

considering McCain's hellbent drive to squander untold billions more of hard-working Americans' money and lives into the failed Iraq war
I think McCain is moving beyond Iraq. He wants to squander more blood and treasure messing with Iran and Russia. The guy is a total psycho, bought and paid for by the neo-cons. If the neo-cons couldn't get their first pick, Guilliani, they'd settle for McCain. So here we are.

Not just clean, but also "well spoken" and it's true, I've never heard Obama end a sentence with "Ya know wha I'm sayin?"
Oh, the wonders of the covert, subliminal racism of white "progressives."

Kind of a boring choice. Maybe Team Obama is trying to pick someone who fits the Lydon Johnson mold (senior senator), so they can keep trying to regurgitate images of Camelot and portray Obama as the rebirth of Kennedy - the same way Bush and the Neo-cons copied World War II rhetoric to try to sell the Iraq war to the American people.
Is this the best the Ivy league educated dolts can do? Sequels? Nothing original? Nothing outside the box?
This choice will do nothing for Obama. The only positive of this whole thing is the slight to the Clinton's. There's a rivalry brewing within the Democratic party that will have to come to a head one of these days.

I've read that there is a lot of effort going into trying to popularize the sport internationally, including funding to start programs in places you wouldn't expect like some nations in the Middle East.
I wonder how much Title 9 has to due with the American women's dominance of the sport. Title 9, basically requires American college athletics to split funding equally between male and female sports. I would imagine the big winners of this legislation have been women's basketball and softball. They probably see much more money than fencing or field hockey. So that begs the question: are the college softball teams in Japan, Australia, Taiwan, etc. funded as well as the Americans? If it is a funding problem, then you can probably expect the Chinese to be the most improved team in 2016, if the sport returns to the games.
Hopefully Ueno's performance will draw more girls into the sport the way Arikawa, Miki and Asada have drawn more girls into figure skating. That way, in 2016, Japan will have more than one ace pitcher and won't have to play the same one for three games in 35 hours.
I imagine Team Japan is having one hell of a good time right now.

It's time for the Americans to let go and move on. Their blowhard Romanian coach never had a problem with the judging or the age of the Chinese when his two princesses did well, but when they didn't get gold in an event, every judge and competitor at the event was declared suspect. Maybe its an Eastern European thing, but it really looks like poor sportsmanship in American eyes. Shawn Johnson and Nastia Luikin did quite well, but I guess they were expected to sweep the event and that's where the sour grapes come in. If they truly were the greatest gymnists in the world, then the age of their competitors shouldn't matter. What is the objective here, to strip some of the Chinese athletes, like Kexin HE of their gold medals and re-award them to the Americans? Bad move.

Boobug, you must be worldlier than that if you're on this website. I've lived on an international border in the past and had the chance to watch two nations' media coverage of the same international sporting events. Each nation favors its own athletes, no matter how remarkable or pathetic they are. They are playing to their audience. I get frustrated over this, too. Why are they (my media) showing the performance of the 9th place Nation A finisher, when I wanted to see the third place finisher from Japan? What is real bullsh*t is that in this age of the internet, we don't have the option of paying to download the entire event, for example - video of all of the pole vaulters who competed, instead of just the TV footage of #1, #2 and the guy from our home nation.
Regardless, the home country's media always fawns over its own, not just in Japan. I hope Ueno and the rest of the team get plenty of media attention, accolades and rewards from Japan for their hard earned and historic win. They won it.

Danno, this rule is probably put in place to speed up the game. If you'd watched the game against the Australians (the bronze round), you'd have seen Ueno get charged with a "ball" pitch several times for not pitching the ball within 20 seconds of getting the ball back from the catcher. That "stupid rule" was initiated to speed up the game, so you can assume several minutes of throwing 4 balls to get a walk would be eliminated by the IOC in order to speed up the game also. Yes, there is a rare chance of a wild throw that might create an exciting moment, but not frequent enough to warrant keeping the tradition.

First, credit for the win has to go to the pitcher, Ueno, who put in a remarkable performance, pitching 3 full games (2 in extra innings) in 35 hours. She was the team's lynch pin. If she'd folded, the team would have folded.
Second, the rest of the Japanese team, who gave the U.S. team its first real competition in the series.
Third, I agree with what one of the American commentators said - that the U.S. team, used to bulldozing through all of their competition and usually ending their games in 5 innings, may have crumbled a little under pressure when they came up against a pitcher matching their caliber and a team that fought them hard for the full game, two games in a row, instead of folding like most of their other competition.
Good job Japan.

The bronze medal game between the Aussies and Japan just finished, with Japan coming out on top 4-3 after 12 innings, so Japan will get one more crack at the United States in the gold medal game.
Japan's pitcher, Yukiko Ueno, is like an unbreakable machine. She pitched two games in one day, both well into overtime, with no relief pitcher in either game and pitched solid through both games.
It doesn't make sense that they're eliminating baseball and softball, while introducing dirt bikes as an Olympic sport.

I think NATO is going to learn the same lesson the Russians learned. The only way you can "keep" Afghanistan is to stay in Afghanistan and keep the Taliban in the hills. The same goes for most insurgencies.

I like the look. It's charming and refreshing. There is a lot of diversity within the style, so it allows for more individuality than the name would suggest. The clothes are expensive, which is probably why many girls buy parts of their outfits second hand or make them by hand. As long as they are having fun and feel good about themselves, no harm is being done and they're cute to look at.
There is a Lolito(male) culture. The look is dapper and feminine, sort of like a European prince from the 18th Century.

The obese and the drunk prefer the 3-wheel electric scooters you can sit down on. Supposedly, these things are supposed to help the elderly, but if President Bush did a header on a Segeway, I don't see how a geriatric will do much better on one of these. Better to ration 3-wheel scooters to the elderly and ban their use among the obese.

Amusing. Her son is the mayor of Detroit, Michigan. He's wrapped up in a scandal regarding corruption, theft and lying about no less than 3 adulterous affairs. In addition, he is now accused of assaulting a police officer. The FBI is after him. Meanwhile, Ms. Kilpatrick faces the very real chance of losing her congressional seat to another African woman. The whole black (and white) community wants these jerks out of office and out of our lives. So? What to do? Time to play the race card to secure reelection!

I get so tired of watching people and the media wring their hands and fret over poor little Israel. Israel is a nuclear power. She can deliver nukes with her aircraft and her submarines. The Israelis know this. The Iranians know this. Israel can defend herself.
If American politicians want to defend something, they should start with their borders.

Madverts, I certainly don't believe any people should be "crapped on" and the suffering of the people of Zimbabwe is awful. The point I was trying to make was that Rhodesia was a stable, prosperous nation. The West came in and collapsed that stability. They installed a strongman and we've seen what sort of fruit that has borne. I'm not a great admirer of the Anglo-sphere, but where it has rooted around, it seems to have provided the structure of the rule of law. That's not so bad.

Maybe people that were there. For example, read Peter Godwin's book "Mukiwa." He was one of those bleeding heart liberals who welcomed the death of Rhodesia. He was a native of the country. What he noticed, though, was that Mugabe started killing -literally killing- his rivals soon after he took power. Dumping their bodies down mine shafts, etc. That was back in the 1980's. Now people are only catching onto his dark side after inflation runs 1000% and refugees cause trouble for other multi-culti nightmare nations like South Africa. Please. Zimbabwe was a democracy at one time and a safe place to live - when it was Rhodhesia, ever since, it has been sliding toward African anarchy.
