Ian Smith tried to save their country, but the Liberal Democrats of this sh*t world preferred a human experiment that will now cost hundreds of thousands of lives. Good going! Wait for the blowback

Ian Smith, vindicated. Rhodesia, vindicated. The bastards made their bed, so why does anyone really care? Tomorrow it will be Angola or Tanzania or the Congo. The West tried to help (in its own way), the Africans rejected it. Let's just keep the Africa - Western Europe/America relationship on a business level and not meddle in their internal affairs.

God bless the Irish. When the people are allowed to vote, the answer is no. That is why the European elite have tried to skirt democracy and have the so-called "reform" treaty passed by the government bodies alone. This is the same tricky way unpopular international treaties like NAFTA are passed in the Americas. I wouldn't be surprised if the American and European elites weren't exchanging notes on how to best get around the will of their citizen-subjects.

Monarchies can be thought of as an insurance plan. If the democracy collapses, you then have a choice between a military government or a monarchy. Probably not a risk for Japan, but for several "at risk" nations in Europe, it might be a card you want to keep on the table.

Because nothing makes a hike in the mountains more peaceful and relaxing than some jerk listening to a baseball game on a radio set at full volume.

Interesting how the worm turns. America has gotten used to flexing its political and military muscle to gain the advantage in business and politics. Now, its President is going around with a tip-jar begging for aid, while his subjects are losing their homes and spending half a day's pay to fill up their automobiles.
Russia, which was economically raped in the 1990's by a cabal that included the Clinton government and the Oligarchs is now selling oil at $130+ a barrel and raking it in. After all that, it must be nice to be able to say to the world, "Hey, we're not like those exploiters from the U.S., we want to help you."
Damn, what does that remind me of?

Your opinion. Not supported by the many, many people who have read books like "Hiroshima" or "Black Rain," or historical works on the fire bombings and atomic attacks.
Before making such callous statements, think about how you would feel if the same "logic" was used in dismissing Jewish deaths during the so-called holocaust, an act that is a criminal offense in much of Europe.
The number I've seen is that 15% of U.S. POW's died during detainment in Japan during WWII, versus 40% who died in the hands of the Chinese and North Koreans during the Korean War. This figure certainly doesn't support Americans executing P.O.W's on the battlefield. I believe this was also a war crime for which Axis power soldiers were prosecuted after the war, but which American soldiers committed with impunity in both theaters of the war.

Good point M.L., who is the bigger fool? Saddam, thinking he can get V.D. from a clothesline or the American people for thinking Iraq was a threat to them?

At least he died a more dignified death than Ariel Sharon (now a comatose poop machine).
Uh, I don't think so. French and Japanese may be beautiful languages, but Arabic belongs at the bottom along with German and Hebrew.
