European diesel engines they can match if not better the hybrid models for mileage.

The problem is, California calls the shots on Green Technology in the USA and California has an irrational hatred of diesel engines.

This has "Teachers' Union" written all over it. Other state and municipal offices are shifting to a 4-day work week and there is no doubt the teachers and school administrators want the same benefit. But this hurts students with after school activities, like sports, and older students who may have part-time jobs. It denies kids 5 days of instruction. If the schools want to realize cost savings, they should switch their defined benefit pensions over to a 401k system like everyone in the private sector gets stuck with.

this whole thing does rather shout to the world "look how shallow our culture is".

I guess it depends upon what the message is. Some Japanese fashion is unique and bizarre, if not cute, like the Lolita look. It could be a stab at saying that Japanese kids are not all conformist, suicidal, studying robots (as portrayed in the West).

It could also be an attempt at projecting soft power with a non-threatening image. I suppose they could send out Samurai and soldiers dressed in 1930's uniforms, but that probably project a negative image, as would Geisha's.

I don't care who she is. I don't care how rich she is. I don't care how goreous she is.

    Dressed up cat = Dealbreaker.

For me, it's the tattoo that's a deal breaker (indicates an impulsive girl who doesn't think long term). A girl who dresses up her cat, well that's just fine. And that she has a cat instead of some big slobbering woof-woof dog, even better.

The research wasn't "banned", it just wasn't funded by the federal government. I love how the media spins this. Private funding by venture capitalists wasn't illegal, but like most science in that damn country, there is always someone (like corporations) looking for a free ride on the taxpayers' back.

Now Obama has opened another spigot to piss away money America doesn't have and will have to borrow from China and Japan. And in the middle of a global economic meltdown. Yes, President Obama is quite a leader.

It is nice to see Honda getting back into the "full" hybrid market again with a product that can rival Toyota's Prius.

even better if he hadn't had to pretend japanese fans are some kind of special favourite

He may genuinely like the Japanese and appreciate them as a people. Some people do.

The atrocities committed in Afganistan under the Taliban, Gaza under Hamas, the Sudan under the state-sponsored Janjaweed, etc., are far worse than Saudi Arabia.

Right on the Taliban, wrong on Hamas, only partially right on Sudan. I'm sure if you are not part of the non-Arab separatists who are at war with the government, life is probably pretty good in Sudan, relative to Saudi Arabia.

I doubt Japanese Electronics and Cars will or can be competitvely priced.

They don't have to be. People buy Japanese cars because their last American car blew its transmission at just 50,000 miles (and that was after a half dozen other "things gone wrong" such as window regulators burning out and dome lights falling out of the headliner).

Sony, on the other hand, might as well shut down and sell all its assets to the Chinese. What the hell happened to those guys?

I agree it's not simple. Pakistan has a BIG internal problem and their survival is more important than Afghanistan. But can you run the risk of allowing the Taliban to return to a supposedly democratic country where they may possible take over the country through the ballot box?

And what is a moderate Taliban anyway? One that doesn't want to bomb America but still wants to make certain that girls aren't allowed to be educated or hold a job? One that doesn't believe in democracy but will use the system until he attains control of the country?

This war in Afghanistan, against an ideological enemy, can only be won by crushing the group that harbors and promotes the ideology.

Improvements in forensic science mean there is very little chance for the execution of the innocent. As for the expense, legal loopholes could be trimmed and executions could be raffled off on E-Bay for a profit. The United States doesn't execute nearly enough of the losers who have preyed upon society. Considering the density of the prison population and the high murder and rape rates, the U.S. should have an execution rate at least as high as China's. It wouldn't be a bad idea to expand the death penalty to economic mega criminals like Bernie Madoff either. As a deterrent, of course.

Wait, so the British were cooperating? We already know the Canadians as well. Gosh....it's like....I dunno.....it's like other governments criticize Gitmo on the one hand to keep their people happy, then go along with it secretly on the other.

If your nation had an out of control Arab/Muslim population that riots on a dime, you would want your government to behave the same way. The only reason the United States is allowed to imprison and torture Arab Muslims the straight forward way they do is that the American Arab Muslim population is small and relatively well integrated into their society. They don't riot. The American government certainly wouldn't dare treat Africans or Mexicans the way they treat the Arabs.

Don't worry, Obama is creating new agencies and government spending that will create hundreds of thousands of government jobs. Follow this to its logical end, eventually every American will be working for the government, just like those other economic miracles: North Korea and Cuba.

How can there be a restart of USA-Russian relations if the USA continues to push for the Ukraine, Georgia and other former Soviet territories be absorbed into NATO? It looks like the US position hasn't changed. Not surprising, since Clinton's husband started the assault on Russia during his presidency in the 1990's.
