@Jeff Ryan: In this case the inadequate rescue services of Japan were only able to lift the children by helicopter to the hospital.

Japan is far from perfect, but certain people on this website really do need to take a stress pill.

    @Godan: Seriously?

I am sure there were some people at Sony in the beginning who were unhappy about Stringer's appointment. But do you really think Taro working down in Tech Design really cares about whether the head of the company is foreign or Japanese?

It seems as if you are just making excuses for Stringer. It is not all his fault, but things have not improved under his leadership.

Not much will change, Hirai was head of Sony Entertainment in America. Sony need to get back to doing what they did best.

shirokuma2011 - You are way too smart for this website.

In marketing AKB they now try and cover all bases, so there is a bit of sex appeal, but mostly cutesie fun; they have janken competitions for crying out loud. Also many of the members are well over the age of 18, so the whole "sexualising children/teenagers/little lolitas" argument is a bit redundant. If you look at what they wear is it really that different to your average high school girl?

Posted in: Do you think all-girl groups like AKB48 are being marketed as sexualized little Lolitas or is it just harmless fun?

I wonder if the author of this article would spend so much time discussing the beauty of the artist if the artist were male.

Her artwork sounds interesting, though given the imagery I doubt I would take a date to one of her exhibitions

To be honest "bicultural" if you take out the second step, I would say that most companies the wold over deal with their scandals this way. I suppose if I were to take it further, in the U.S. the finance geniuses who oversaw the GFC are now advising the president on finance.

I am a huge Sono fan and I am yet to see a bad movie from him, but - and I do not want to pre-judge before watching the movie - this strikes me as quite cynical.

beowulf did you watch the race? She made the other women look fat.

Seriously, she made the Bronze medalist, Linet Chepkwemoi Masai look fat?

I am not saying Kinukawa is not thin, she is, but that is her body shape when she is running and training. I also wrote that I thought she looked ill and should not have run, but...

Then what was she doing on the team? If she had that many strikes against her they should have chosen a lesser known but better prepared and fit runner to represent the country.

Two months ago she ran an "A qualifier" for both the 5000 metres and 10000 metres respectively and excluding one other Japanese runner (Fukushi, who is not competing because she is focusing on the marathon) she is the fastest Japanese female runner over both distances this year. I am not sure what else she could have done to qualify.

As far as I know her preparation was fine for this competition and she was fit, so what happened yesterday is anybody's guess. But looking at her before the race she looked visibly pale, so I would say she was sick.

If she was not sick then it would have been wiser not to run.

Kinukawa is not under nourished, she is an elite distance runner who had a very bad day. For those of you who know nothing about distance running, elite runners have low total body weights, being small in stature and lightly muscled, particularly in the upper body. These physical traits are important given they have to carry their body weight over many kilometres. Distance runners also typically carry very low body-fat levels.

Kinukawa looked ill last night and really should have not ran or pulled out once she felt discomfort. It is a shame because she has been through an awful lot over the last four years with illness and injury and has only just returned to world class form.

JT, sorry to be a stickler, but she has been an actor for a lot longer than she has been a singer; I also tend to believe that she act a lot better than she sings.

I think comedy shows are an ideal thing to do with somebody on a date. People laugh, feel better and afterwards you can both talk about the show.

Museums and galleries are also cool. It gives you a chance to talk without having to force a conversation like at a restaurant.

I think they all look fantastic. There is an array of looks and styles going on here and that is what I come to expect from Harajuku fashion.

It does seem strange that they disembarked seperately, but I can think of a few reasons.

    1. Do not want the media to get a photo of them together because they have already signed a deal with a magazine for an exclusive couple shoot.

    2. They just do not want the media to cash in.

    3. They are protective of their privacy. They did have a no media allowed wedding, which makes a nice change from the normal talento wedding here in Japan. Hitherto I am yet to see a photo of these two together in the media. I am sure there are photos, but that just tells me they are not complete media whores.

I could be wrong of course, I am just speculating on a hypothesis.

I did not need to google anything, because I have actually watched his films, unlike you. I am also not a Japanophile, I am a cinephile and as a cinephile I can tell pretty quickly when somebody has no idea about cinema.

Kitano directing "Brother" (I am almost certain that is the movie you are referring to, though I am sure you do not know it), certainly tips its gangster hat to Tarantino. But that is expected, because it is set in LA and it is also a nice way to return the favour to somebody who references Asian cinema in his (Tarantino) films.

Brother, Reservoir Dogs and City on Fire are all pretty good movies in my opinion, but what so I know I actually watch the movies I talk about.

No one has profited more from clueless Japanophiles than this guy. As far as I can tell he's made the same rip-off of "Resevoir Dogs" (with him blasting away with his shiney Colt.45 in a bloody black suit and sunglasses) for the past 10 years

I would rather be a clueless Japanophile than clueless like you. In the last ten years Kitano has made six movies. Of those six only "Brother" and "Zatoichi" could be called genre movies and "Brother" is the only gangster film. The other four movies are pretty bad (Dolls is okay), but they are certainly not genre movies.

If you had written that all he can make is genre movies then you might have been onto something, but you did not, because you are ignorant.

I am wondering if anybody criticising Kitano has actually watched any of his films, particularly the ones from the 90's? Because they are quite extraordinary. I sincerely hope that Outrage is a return to his films of the 90's.

Oh yeah Reservoir Dogs is a film that ripped off its entire ending from a Hong Kong movie called "City on Fire", but I am sure horsefella knew that too.

Actually this woman can act! Check out Tokyo Shonen or Koi Suru Nichiyoubi - Watashi Koi Shita, two completely different performances, but brilliantly played by Horikita.

She, Hanae Kan and Aoi Miyazaki are the best young actresses working in Japan today.
