Until they start selling cheaper OTC drugs (that actually work) I'm going to continue going to the doctor when I have a cold, since I can get cheaper, more effective drugs to help alleviate my symptoms. That said, I haven't caught a cold in the last 3 years so it's certainly not me clogging up the hospitals.

Yes mods, I do realize that. I should have written that it was built more for trucks or with trucks in mind, rather than passenger cars. It is so trucks can avoid congestion, leaving more space for regular cars on other roads / bridges. I also wrote that it is a "kokudou" which means all cars can use it for free.

I believe the news on Japanese TV stated that the daughter was physically handicapped and had some learning disabilities as well. They also mentioned that the mother was worried about the future of her daughter. Perhaps the mother couldn't take it any more? Of course I don't condone her actions. Sad it had to turn out this way.

Makoto, ever heard of "hiropon?" I think that gave the kamikaze pilots more courage than the concept of loyalty. Also, you mention that loyalty is a very difficult concept for people to understand, but not for you?

It really depends on the place and depends if the waiter / waitress is a professional or just a part-time worker. One fancy izakaya in Ebisu I went to had a young waiter (probably university student) who actually reached across the table to grab an empty glass. He could have walked 3 steps to the other side, but didn't know any better. On the other hand, I've been to some cheap izakayas where the young staff were super cheerful and friendly, even. Good, efficient service too. Generally, the 50-something-year-old obasans are the best. Very polite, good manners, correct keigo. I went to Imahan in Asakusa and the service there was excellent. Anyway, I've learned that a higher price doesn't always mean a higher level of service, but the older the establishment and the older the staff, the better the service.

I agree that AKB 48 lacks talent, but according to an interview with their producer (Akimoto) that's exactly what they're going for. They are not "complete" idols but have many imperfections. This makes them seem more real to their fans. Another factor is that they will get better at dancing and singing (hopefully) and prettier (with plastic surgery) and fans will be able to see their transformation as they get closer to being true idols. I'm not making this stuff up, nor am I in any way a fan of AKB. Just sayin. Anyway, Akimoto sure knows how to make the big bucks.

How about the hammer throw or javelin? In sports it is common knowledge that exhaling forcefully helps one exert more power. I find Sharapova's grunting to be annoying, but if it helps her game then I see no problem with it.

My only complaint is towards Izakayas who hire only Chinese or Korean students who can't speak or understand Japanese very well. I've had to ask them to repeat what they said and I've been charged for things I didn't order. The store manager apparently didn't teach them how to smile either. Other than that, service is generally quite good. Can't argue against the "by the manual" bit though.

crustpunker, I have to agree. I used to get sick at least once a year, but I haven't gotten sick at all over the past few. I have to go to many companies and meet clients for my job. Lots of them were sick but still working, because you can only stay home from work if you have a fever in this country. Anyway, I think being exposed to so many sick people has actually made my immune system stronger. Sure, I wash my hands but when you're sitting across the table from a guy who's coughing his lungs out, there's not much you can do in terms of prevention.

Very efficient pitcher with good control. He often gets to the 7th inning in under 100 pitches. Should rack up the wins in NY with run support.

JT - gorimaccho means a very buff or muscular guy, not gorilla macho. It's another one of those new words, like hosomaccho, which means a skinny guy with some muscle. Still, I'm sure they'll find out they aren't very "macho" at all if they end up in prison.

Neither Brady nor Manning did much to win these games. They were handed the wins by mistakes made by the other teams. How do you miss a 32 yard field goal? How do you turn the ball over twice on punt returns? The Ravens and 49ers played outstanding defense. Too bad special teams had to ruin it for them.
