Quote me from May 27th on this site

Scenario one : He'll get a suspended sentence and be booted out of the country. Scenario two : He'll get a nominal jail sentence ......

    Scenario 1

and me from June 7th on this site

I think he has to decide whether he wants to try and reduce his sentence or stand up for what he believes in. If he folds they might be lenient, but if he toughs it out he'll do time, but earn respect in Japan, which will do more for his cause in the long run than any antics at sea.

He folded, from the article above

In his tearful closing statement June 10, Bethune apologized for the trouble but said he never intended to hurt anyone. He also told the court that he will likely no longer continue his anti-whaling protests.

I wonder if I was right about earning respect.

I think the law of the sea is the larger vessel yields right of way to the smaller vessel. However common sense dictates a smaller boat is better able to change course quickly. Ships don't have brakes. If you want to play rough, don't cry when you get a bloody nose, or in this case rammed and hosed.

Maybe they should take Norman Tebbit's advice and get on their bikes and look for work, or like many of us did, get on a plane.

He is limiting his intake of food to make it easier to resist the interrogation, they use the physical discomfort of denying the opportunity to take care of certain bodily functions to break people down. I bet he is limiting his liquid intake to a minimum too. He's trying to outlast the cops. Passing out from hunger is better than confessing.

Japan is prone to earthquakes, big and small, obviously they need to check the tracks frequently.

Mandelson and honesty are two words you don't often see in the same sentence.

Because the reject anything they do not understand. Generally Japanese people who see themselves as having authority use the law when it suits them, and ignore it when it doesn't, if they cannot ignore it they deride it. They know they can do this domestically, but not internationally.

You don't have to look much further than the video Nessie posted to see why they lost, Ishihara's attitude to foreigners is so out of date. By behind the scenes he may well be alluding to people telling the IOC about his plans to pour concrete over mountains.

I wonder why people get tattoos. If it is to make a statement I guess you can't object when people don't agree with your statement. If it is for your own satisfaction you can't really complain when people judge you as self indulgent. It is not really a mark of individuality because they are so common that in some countries it is has become a mark of conformity, oh you have a tattoo, yawn.

Apparently tattoo removal is becoming more popular in the USA now the economy has got tougher.

This is why foreign owned companies have been cutting back on ex-pats for some time now, first it was a preference for people without families, now they are even replacing them with, shock horror, local hire gaijin and bilingual Japanese. I've even heard murmurs of ex-pats considering a local hire contract to keep their job. In this global downturn options are limited and market forces are coming into play.

I've worked with many, their main role appears to be holding the hands of expats client side. Personally I think they should all have a 2 year induction course of living in a six mat room and studying Japanese before they are let loose in meetings.

So Japan is turning into a nation of jobsworths, scroungers, and feeloaders. Companies don't expect you to work long hours anymore, the Labour Ministry has been pushing for work life balance for years now, it's the workers that would rather sit in the office than go home and look after the kids that cling on to the corporate warrior ethos.

In my experience in the Japanese corporate world (15 years) the first thing any Japanese person does when faced with real work is try to find someone else to do it.
