Hard to say how many hereditary politicians there are in the UK's House of Commons, but not so hard to spot them in the House of Lords, or indeed Mr Brown's new cabinet, or the Mandy Fan Club as it is now known.
I agree with the gist of this article, it's about time those of us who chose to live and work in Japan started supporting our hosts. Japan isn't perfect, but it isn't bad, and in some ways may be ahead of the western economic model. The 90s in Japan weren't too bad if you were prepared to be flexible and work for a living.
It isn't so long since the foreign share holder activists where ranting about how Japanese companies should be run according to western rules. The Japanese reply was that if things got tough the foreign money would leave. The world economy went belly up, and most of the foreigners got scared and ran, as predicted.

@spammy420 the situation has got out of hand, the massage girls are irritating but the touts are right up the street, so getting to a bar to meet your friends starts to be a chore, it's probably killing off business overall

Anybody who thinks all Hamas has to do is recognise Israel's "right" to exist to achieve peace is living in cloud cuckoo land. Do you really think this would be followed by any meaningful concessions from Israel ? Like giving up the water used to irrigate the Negev desert so the Palestinians can have a regular water supply, or allowing the Palestinians equal rights to build on and develop land ?
Israel is intended to be a "Jewish" state, with the Jews in a majority no matter what. Do people really accept this as a valid premise for a country in this day and age ?

Hamas tried keeping to ceasefires, didn't work. From 2006 http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/06/09/mideast/index.html?section=cnn_latest
According to the IDF one of their missiles went astray that day but this wasn't it.
So who supports the idea of dividing up a country according to notions of race and religion?

How long before Hezbollah steps in from the north and the West Bank goes up ? Win or lose this round Israel is sowing the seeds of its own destruction, probably in a way they do not foresee. The moderate Israelis need the Palestinians, without an external enemy the extremists within Israel will begin to target those who do not conform, the justification of the use of violence to suppress dissent will be used in ways they do not expect, by people they do not suspect.

I also agree with smartacus, at least he is making the effort. He is also putting his money where his mouth is, or rather the tax payers' money, larger tax rebates for people with home loans, one off pay outs, cutting expressway tolls spring ot mind. It's easy to be cynical, but maybe the powers that aren't have realised putting the squeeze on the little guy for so long has hindered the economy and hasn't helped the decreasing birth rate. We should wait a while and see how his policies play out before we criticize. He might have also seen how effective mobilizing the younger voter was in the USA & wants to get in there first.

Errr, the companies just went bust, so they weren't so smart after all were they ? Masters of window dressing and creative accounting more like, but sooner or later the truth will out, in this case they appear to have suffered a severe short circuit.
The markets are "unregulated" to allow market forces to work, over regulation is seen to stifle innovation. Sadly the people working in this industry appear to lack any moral fibre, self respect or common sense. They should be made personally liable for all losses, since one of the basic rules of capitalism is the relationship between risk and return. This is the only regulation needed.

I think it stems from a vague but deeply implanted victim mentality, particularly prevalent in the run up to the anniversary of Japan losing the war. Over the years the facts have become vague, but the emotions are pervasive.

Will the surcharges come down when the price of fuel comes down ?
The travel agents tell us the surcharge may go up between booking the ticket and setting off, basically shifting the risk onto the customer. This is getting into a grey area since you are charged if you cancel your flight, but you have no idea what your journey will cost you if you book ahead. Basically airlines are adopting banker's logic, the risk is on the customer's side, the profit on theirs.
Blaming the rise in fuel prices on India and China, or trouble in Nigeria, is not actually accurate. The situation in these countries has not suddenly changed, but prices have surged this year. The increase in prices is due to an influx of speculators in oil futures.
I've also considered the alternative, the Trans Siberian Express is starting to look like an option for Europeans.
Posted in: As fuel prices continue to rise, the fuel surcharge on airfares is also increasing. What's your view on the issue?
