I think that is a cool pic.

Oh come on. This photo could have been taken in ANY combini in ANY part of Japan. I cannot think of one occasion when I've walked into one of these stores where there wasn't at least one person standing and reading. At least in this pic no one was caught with their hand down their pants having 'a quick one' before going back home or catching the next train.

As for the Borders comparison, well, they DO provide seats and coffee shops. When shopping there I always avoid the too-well-thumbed-and-dirtied books and magazines.

Nifty gadget, but I prefer to read a book onpaper - environmental heathen that I am.

Yes, but I agree with GW - the taxi drivers want this golden time (and money) to themselves. Not to mention the capsule hotels, saunas, 24 food joints and other "waiting for the first train" hangouts. I also agree a reduced timetable would be good to start off with, and then it be regulated over time, depending on demand. I seriously don't want to be sardined-in on a wee-small-hours train with reeking salarimen and other returning nomikai-ers.

I think you guys basically covered all the bases - props for the 'No transacting with Don Johnson lookalikes' bit! I also liked the "No 3 Card Monty" line. :)

As others have said, there are gems among the dross. Kurosawa and Ozu (anyone ever seen the heartbreaking Tokyo Story?). There are also some modern stunners like "Dare mo shiranai" ("Nobody Knows") (2004).

Still, as for what you can rent here, one great pity with the advent of the DVD was that few if any domestic Japanese movies have been produced without any other language but Japanese. This has made their linguistic accessibility limited for those living here. Yes, I know we should all be fluent, JLPT1+++ speakers/listeners/readers/writers if we live here (!), but those who aren't that skilled would enjoy the opportunity to watch what's available comfortably in another language.

That dude must be very wealthy to be hanging out with a hot babe like that.

I believe wealth has little to do with it. He's either been paid to attend and promote himself and his brand, or he's just another talento who's snagged an invite because he's famous for being famous and wants to keep that image going (A "He'll turn up for the opening of an envelope" type).

And undoubtedly some photographer has put the two of them together for a snap because (whether true or not) he has a rep as being an oily lounge lizard after who likes chasing and snaring tasty young things.

As for Ms J, I liked her best in her shorts and boots in "Ghost World". Yum.

It's back with the '-ist' awards...I thought they might have been a passing trend, once-too-many-times mocked by the JT community. But they survive!

Mariah Carey /Celine Dion / Michael Bolton - people with good voices who choose to indulge in vocal histrionics.

Great that you've got a good voice, but jeez, just sing the song. Don't need to prove it every time.

I think we should start a pool on how many appearances Aya can make on JT in the span of one week (photo-of-the-day, entertainment, etc). I think last week was around 3 or 4. At least.

When these people become popular here, their managers squeeze the dear life out of them. I wonder when they have time to sleep. As I continue to say, there is no such word as 'overexposure' in the world of Japanese celebrity-dom.

I'd much rather hear "No...don't stop!!!"

I think it would be better if the original question asked 'continue to date, settle down with and/or marry.' Neither gender does not have to be selective for that first 'trial' (AKA 'make-or-break') date. I've been on both the giving and receiving end of those.
