How did our grandparents live so long, because they followed the clean decent ways of their grandparents.

@Raja: You're suggesting that previous generations lived longer than current ones, something which is patently false. How do explain the incrementally increasing life expectancy over the generations? Using facts and your logic, it would seem that NOT living like our grandparents did (or having access to better diet, health services, medical technology and therapies) and being naughty, immoral people has had its benefits! Oh, as for affordable health care for all, I'm behind it 100%. A healthy society is...well...a healthy society.

I saw the original as a teen. Knew nothing about it before I entered the cinema. It was one of the greatest rides I ever had with a movie. From that day on I swore that I'd try to know AS LITTLE about any film before seeing it, so everything would be fresh from the word go. I still try and keep that rule.

AS for the new version, I wonder if the anti-Japanese (Asian?) bent of the Matthau character is still intact. In that version, during the emergence of the crisis, a group of Japanese transport officials are visiting the control center. Mattahu, viewing them as an intrusion and a nuisance, insults them, believing they don't speak English. However, when it's time for them to leave, a member of the group thanks him - in perfect English - for the opportunity of seeing the center in action. Leading to much tension-breaking hilarity... ;)

Actress Nagiko Tono, 29, revealed on her blog

prior to her July 15 entry – when she suddenly announced she would be taking a break from her blog – she often gave the impression that things were going well. Tono’s agency did not provide any further details.

I think most of these talento 'blogs' are blags - puff pieces written by some flunky in the celeb's agency purely for image and publicity.

Let me succinct then. Alcohol WAS an drug that was made illegal at one time but eventually was allowed back for public consumption. And when Prohibition was over, the the US did not go to 'hell in a handbasket' as a result. It's the same with similar drugs. ;)

I think the only drugs that should be legal in Japan are the drugs that are perscribed from a license Doctor, and not from a street person. Illegal drugs are bad for peoples health, mind, future, family, and can be used by criminals to control weak minded people.

The last time I commented on this statement it was pulled. Let's see if this fits the bill.

Alcohol is a drug that is legal here, but not legal in other places. Tobacco contains drugs, and there is no discouragement by the Japanese government to stop using it, because sales of this product in Japan's best (fiduciary) interests.

The issue of what is 'legal' and 'illegal' is set by the standards or mores of the society. If a drug is illegal in your country, IT does not mean it IS bad - but the general thinking and belief about it is that it is bad.

If one were to suggest that Japan take a good hard look at the effects of alcohol and tobacco on "peoples health, mind, future, family", then it would be deemed bad and made illegal. During Prohibition in the US when alcohol was illegal it was often controlled by criminals, but were the people who chose to go to Speakeasies and illicit sellers of liquor 'weak minded' just because it was illegal? Do people in Japan who drink and smoke 'weak minded people' who are simply living in a place were the substance they enjoy is legal?

Moderator: Readers, please stay on topic. Alcohol and tobacco are legal. Focus your comments on those drugs that are not legal.

What is the plural of Lego? 'Legos', 'Legoes', or is it 'pieces of Lego'?

In any respect, the the amount of Lego there seems quite high.

He went to, y'know, that farm in the countryside where dogs can run around freely and happily. And no, we can't go and visit him. Don't ask again.

Wow - I guess no more ad sponsorship for her from JT or any of its many subsiduaries.

Nevertheless, I find the whole 'danger of walking with cigarettes' meme here in Japan an elaborate diversionary maneuver. By choosing to show 'care' by focusing on minor 'dangers' (i.e. burning someone with a lit cigarette) or 'manners' (e.g. the need to carry a portable ashtray so you do not sully the area with ash and butts), this deflects from the major issues of cancer, emphysema and all the other SERIOUS ailments that come as a result of smoking.

Why no pics? The Shukan Post, who originally wrote the article either didn't have (or didn't get enough dosh) to pass them on to JT.
