Does one play mahjong on a board? Shogi, yes. Chess, yes. Go, yes. Checkers, yes, Monopoly, yes - they're all played on boards, but I thought mahjong simply needed a table. Opinions?

    One more thing:

Students, who skip class, could still fake attendance by giving their iPhone to a friend who goes to class. But youngsters aren’t likely to lend their mobile phones, which are packed with personal information and email, according to the university.

The common practice of owning two phones may be being overlooked here, methinks - the one they had when they entered the uni, plus the one being 'offered' to them at the 'prestigious' universities.

Pardon me, but I like to pick up on this comment:

Other universities, including Stanford University and Duke University in the U.S., use the iPhone in their programs.

Do these universities use it in the same way as the 'prestigious' universities are planning to use it:

in part to use its Global Positioning System to nab students that skip class

Or do Stanford University and Duke University use the phones simply

to relay course materials, lecture videos and tests.

Or do they also track absentees with these devices as well? I'd say if they do, that's an invasion-of-privacy matter that US lawyers would be onto quick-smart (unless students waive their rights to privacy by accepting the devices, I guess).

Could we have some clarification on this matter?

Ishikawa, who told police he was unemployed and homeless, admitted to the charges, and was quoted as saying: “I got on the train with the intention of flashing someone.”

Homeless, jobless, and apparently penniless, at least he can't blame it on being drunk or 'stress'. Kudos Ishikawa-san for your honestly and (ahem) 'frankness'! :)

The model said she’s really encouraged by the “electrifying shotgun marriage” between Downtown’s Hitoshi Matsumoto and Rin Ihara.

Possibly a poor translation? If someone falling pregnant and therefore bringing about a marriage is 'encouraging' to another, then that someone needs to do some substantial reconsideration of their priorities, morals, logic, or (d), all of the above!

A flamethrower works wonders. Clears the air and the pathways in front of you. The gas tanks weigh a bit though. Just have to consider it a workout.

He has the 'curtain' hairstyle which I abhor, and, herefornow, if he is rapidly thinning he should be a man and shave it off. I have no respect for anyone who chooses the combover/barcode look. As soon as I see it, I have severe doubts about the person's integrity. That goes for toupees as well. "What do you have to hide???"

As for his wife (AKA 'The Joker', AKA 'The Incubator'), with her perma-grin, the less said the better.

Reporters, however, weren’t interested in asking Fujikawa about the plot.

Because these events have little to do with the product or service, and more with the human prop that fronts the show.

And - let me guess - she has no idea or interest in the movie, and was just told to turn up to face the journos.

    Am I right?

    Hmmm...yes?

    @WilliB

Isn´t there one single Japanese journalist who is embarrassed about the idiotic behaviour of his collegues?

Perhaps, but they probably have editors demanding they ask daft questions in order to get the 'scoops' and soundbites publishers think the public wants.

And, as you know, the local public here can't get enough talento gossip, y'know! ;)

“There needs to be more programming for mature audiences. A friend at a production company told me the level is around that of a 3rd to 5th grade level. Light-hearted programs are OK, but not all the time,” he says.

So why do I see him on these sorts of shows all the time?

How about putting your paycheck where your mouth is?

Just a tad hypocritical, ne? ;)

In terms of getting what it has to get done, it (and its staff) does a good job. I've never had to wait terribly long for check-in/Immigration/Customs, even after the introduction of the fingerprinting system. I am often astounded how quickly the bags arrive on the carousel after a flight. However, it does feel a bit soulless when you exit the aircraft, and after Immigration/Customs, exit into the reception hall (or whatever the post-Customs space is called). I'd like to have the option of buying some duty-free goods when I exit the flight like you can in cities like Melbourne, Sydney, Singapore's Changi etc - does anyone know why they don't have this feature?

The shopping/eating is probably good for Japanese, but falls far short of places like Changi, for example. As for reading matter, finding something written in any other language than English is both difficult and pricey.

The other up point for me is the inexpensive shower rooms in (I think) Terminal 2 (the one that has had the latest update in its duty-free shopping area). After a long, post-work trip out to the airport, I've often taken a shower, changed clothes and used their private lounge. Inexpensive (Y500 for 30 minutes shower room time, then unlimited private lounge use) and a pleasant way to start a trip. They have small sleeping rooms as well, but I've never availed myself of those. BTW, I've used the Terminal 1 shower rooms and, although they were newer, they were VERY cramped. Terminal 2's shower rooms are almost like a business hotel style bathroom.
