  I do like the 'curry-and-rice restaurant operator' part. Why not 'restaurant operator'? 'Curry-and-rice' suggests the place was not really a 'restaurant', or at least one which is not to be taken seriously. Shall we call izakayas 'beer-and-snacks places'?
