On big issue recently has been the 'random' stops and checks of foreigners by police at Narita airport. These are people who have just left immigration & customs and have been thoroughly Yokoso'd by the local police who have asked them questions that should have been dealt with by the Immigration people. A point in case is which a friend's experience flying out of Narita in mid-December. While sitting in Narita's check-in area, he was approached by a police officer who asked for his passport, gaijin card AND keitai phone number (he was texting when the officer approached him). When my friend asked the officer (in Japanese) whether he'd be conducting the same check of the Japanese couple sitting next to my friend, the officer shrugged and said something to the effect that he was only doing his job. Not unexpectedly, when the officer was done with my friend, he by-passed the Japanese couple and approached the foreign woman sitting next along the same row of seats, and conducted the same line of questioning. My friend was also later singled out and given a thorough going over at the security screening prior to entering immigration AND by the woman taking his boarding card during the boarding process. And remember that this was all before the Dec 25 Detroit incident.

perspective: Exactly. Noise is natural in Japan, and especially on TV. kjkjkj:Yes, other countries have crap TV - and the TV would be on far less if I was back in my home country. But many homes in Japan believe that the TV must be on at all times. Such is my situation.

All I'll say is that Japanese TV talento-driven (that the mrs likes) and the people who inhabit it area world unto themselves. The endless 'discussion' and 'interview' programs (usually involving lots of standing up, pointing and yelling in mock outrage and/or excitement) where they themselves are ultimately the focus of interest. Points in case - the 'impersonation' programs/segments where talentos dress up and often perform as other talentos (who are often in the audience themselves, or who magically appear appear after the impersonation performance has begun to the SHOCK and AMAZEMENT of all concerned). Another case in point - this morning I awake to my wife watching a show where the talentos are being interviewed at Narita and/or in Hawaii on their year-end mini-breaks. Like I said, this element of Japanese TV - this talento world - bugs the hell out of me. And suggestions to turn it off...well, I can forget about that happening as this is the height of entertainment to the mrs.

For the person who suggested 'Star Trek' technology, one of the episodes of 'Enterprise' (post 9/11) featured a group that simply injected themselves with a substance that activated a chemical within their bodies that exploded. Given the recent approaches (mixing liquids/substances while on board), the fantasy-world of Star Trek is not beyond possibility. If you're willing to become a martyr, you'd probably be willing to have a device planted within your body that would avoid detection.

If a group or individual is willing to carry out an operation, a security work-around will always be found.

I'm going to get a job thinking up these useless talento&product-promo 'awards' - I've got a million of them.

'Best Toiletist' is one. Guess what that one's for?

OK - First, good question. Not recycled grudge-bait.

It depends on the person. Each has their own particular interest.

    • Traditional cultural spots for those interested in old Japan (e.g. Nikko)
    • The electronic, manga'd, fashion-oriented world for the young (e.g. Shibuya, Akiba, Harajuku)
    • Sporting events for those who love sports (Baseball, soccer, perhaps even sumo)
    • Food for the foodies (sushi, gyutan)
    • For shoppers, the feel of 'customer is king/queen' in department stores.
    • For drinkers - nomihodais, beer garden bashes, nihonshu tours
    • For pretty much everyone who doesn't mind getting publicly naked - onsens

    And I could go on...

Congratulations on displaying how my love, training, advice, and benevolence have permitted you to engineer this victory over the capitalist running dogs of Japan!

I don't why Gillette are passing up this opportunity to get Tige's endorsement:

[Cut to shot of TW rubbing his cleanly shaven face, then saying:] "Gillette: Just the shave you need to please the women in your life." [TW then winks salaciiusly - but in TW cute way - at the camera]

What a money shot! Roll on Superbowl 30 second commercials, and associated advertising revenues!!!
