So what's the deal here at Japantoday and Japan in general ? Why the boycott of basketball news ? Aside from this story the news has been absolutely nill ! This in spite of the fact that the basketball tournement has been ranked as one of the top three, actually #2, events of interest by the host nation as well as others. So why is Japan avoiding the news altogether. I haven't seen one highlight on J news nor has NHK or any other terrestrial channel shown a single game. Instead of a highly entertaining basketball tournement we are getting replay after replay of judo, kitajima, and now a third place finish by Japan in the mens relay. Japan's coverage continues to be more about genetic make-up and less about the games themselves. No surprise, we see this every four years. The Japanese lovefest with themselves, what a pity.

"I could say that China has Baised judges, Japan got most of it's medal by pure luck, but I wouldn't"

Ummm, you just did ! Welcome to the hyperbole that is the internet.

"Tell me, how many people on the IOC are Americans and spell colour without the 'u'.... I'm dying to know!"

Good god don't go "dying" on me. might I suggest you find the answer yourself. Just wiki up the IOC members list, very easy. But again, you seem completely lost on my comment. I'd suggest you stop, re-read my post, think a bit... no more than that, and try to comprehend the statement that I would rather believe the IOC's viewpoint on the medal rankings over a JT poster. Slowly now smithinjapan, you are starting to worry me.

And pathat, you are probably right:

"I think the U.S. should be proud of the fact that it will win the overall medal total, and equal/surpass not only its gold total of 2004, but very probably top its best ever Olympics medal total of 108 in Barcelona."

Too bad many a JT poster don't embrace your enthusiasm. I sure do ! Again, this has been one outstanding performance by team America !

"Why is bad to question American standings, but ok to question China's standings?"

Um, because it's the "Chinese" that brought up the issue of underage competitors to begin with.. maybe ? Some of you seem grossly misinformed. Go do a little homework then come back with an educated opinion. Some of us are tiring of your ignorance.

And there you have it ! The 100 medal mark has been busted and it's been done, once again, by team USA ! What an outstanding performance by the Americans. And looking at that cloud hanging over the Chinese womens gymnastics and the American teams poised for more gold medal round games, the US is going to make a serious run at the overall gold medal tally. And won't that be a painful pill to swallow if they do. Again, 100 medals at this here Olympics is way beyond the expectations by the USOC. Congratulations ! USA-USA-USA !

Back off bebert ! You are way out of line here. Cheating is cheating. Whether you are doping or using underage contestants the rules are there to ensure fairness. I can imagine the outroar if this was an American kid under investigation. Maybe you could give a better viewpoint than this,

"Sometimes you've gotta be a man and just let the silly sh*t slide."

Cause as it stands you are about to take the gold for "rubbish post of the year" ! Congratulations (?)

ESPN is reporting that the IOC was not really interested in investigating this story, until ?

    "In light of new information"

This could open a real can of worms. The Chinese could forfeit as many as 6 womens medals here, a bunch of them gold. Those would go to the Americans who finished second in many events. Looks like the medal standings are about to get overhauled.

Kick to the groin ! Japan just got worked. I can't help but wonder which fans are more apt to step in front of a chuo line express, the Americans for seeing their team win the silver, or the Japanese losing to their most hated rival. Gee, thats a tough one ! Congratulations to Korea. Who have now beaten Japan 3 out of 4 games including twice at the WBC. It's safe to say the best ballplayers in Asia are not in Japan. Now lets all sit back and see if the kids representing the USA can provide the shocker of the Olympics and take down Cuba.

Oh and BTW, the US medal count has now stretched to a good 15 more than China. China still has some "judged" events coming up which should help them. But in real "team or individual competitions" well, they simply can't compete.

"Think China who have won more gold medals would have something to say about that."

Yes especially after the results of the IOC's investigation into China's womens gymnastics team comes clear. China had 9 golds in gymnastics ! This should be interesting.

"If you use the total number of medals it means the bronze is worth the same as a gold? That's just strange."

    "Not to Americans!"

Or the Japanese media for that matter. They have consistently offered more coverage of Bronze medal finishes over Gold. Just look at the story here at Japantoday about the womens soccer results. All about Japan losing the Bronze and the very last sentence mentions that, BTW, the USA beat Brazil for the gold ! Obviously finishing in the top three means something, not to roomtemperature though, who btw is an avid supporter of, which nation was it again ? LOL

Looks like more foolishness here. so lets be clear about a variety of things. First, this has been an excellent showing by the US womens softball team. Gold is great, but I'll bet you a million none of these girls will be throwing their medal on the floor at the awards ceremony like that European did last week. Nope, the Americans are damn proud of any medal they win whether it be gold, silver, or bronze. We Americans learn early that "you can't win em all!" For those of you trying to suggest otherwise, give it a rest. It took Japan 3 trys to beat the Americans. The Americans simply ran out of luck and the Japanese won. I've been voicing my displeasure about these round-robin tournements from years on back. I say when you lose to a team thats it, you don't get another shot. And to have 3 ? Well, the system is flawed. Maybe they can fix it after the London Olympics, which should be interesting. I can't wait for all them skinheads, lager louts, and "good donkeys" to come out of the woodwork in fine representation of their country. Now its back to more important endeavors, like watching the USA grab that elusive 100th medal ! It's safe to say no other nation at these here Olympics have been as succesful as the US. The medal count indicates the third place team is at about half of what the US has hauled in ! How in gods name could anyone out there criticise such a marvelous achievement ? The US medaled in 18 different sports ! The European nations ? About half that ! What a great nation the US is ! As for Japan, a little disappointing. With half the population of the USA you'd think they would garner about 1/2 as many medals as the US. Not so ! And not even close. Too bad.

    And here come the bashers,

=Great to see such a cocky team

    =with all their swagger

    =fist-pumping

Really ? You saw all that ? All I saw was class and respect for the opponent. Too bad those American traits have failed to rub off on many of the "bitter whingers" we see here. Excellent work team USA, now it's on to the 100 medal threshold and a victory atop the medals table. USA-USA-USA !

"The americans were thought unbeatable but Japan out played them."

Who thought the USA was unbeatable ? This sounds like typical rhetoric "after" the game. I for one think the US womens team has been the pillar of class and respect. They go out every game, play hard, have fun, and are succesful. One loss will never change that. Overall these Olympics have simply been another showcase of Americas might and talent. They are once again on track to haul in more than 100 medals from a variety of sports. No other nation has shown the versatility and skill the US has. Damn great show USA. From the pool to the diamond, damn good show !

"Simply put: The Japan Softball team outplayed the US Team."

Yes, but it took them three chances to finally do it. Flawed system in my opinion. Also, what was with the wide strike zone against the Americans throughout that final game ? No sour grapes, but what's fair is fair and what I saw was a bit dubious.

"why were the officials of FINA the biggest cheerleaders of Phelps? They are supposed to be the neutral governing body in this sport."

Because they obviously understood the "magnitutde" of the event and wanted to be apart of Olympic history, much like everyone (well almost everyone) else.

"Phelps won by 100th of second. So how is it that the official timekeeper of the event is the same company that sponsors Phelps since 2004?"

Weak attempt here. You'd be better off arguing about the suits and pool conditions that have allowed for so many world records in the swimming events. But when all is said and done you simply come off sounding like a whiner, a disgruntled non-American that can't accept the results. Sorry, but the rest of us can ! What a performance ! One for the ages, and once again it's the Americans stealing the show. U-S-A !

    northlondon,

"Japan are the current World Baseball Classic Champions. Like it or not, that makes them default world champions until this Olympics is through"

Wrong ! The WBC winner does not lay claim to the "world champion" title. Organizers of the event were very clear that the WBC was nothing more than a world-wide baseball tournement. Personally I would give more credence to the World Baseball Championships played in Taiwan and won by the USA. That tournement had teams that were actually "trying" to win, and not just "avoid" injury. The WBC was a nice exhibition, but the timing and format was all experimental. Too bad the Japanese, and some of it's misguided fans, still haven't realised this. Maybe thats what Irabu was going off about, maybe he finally got it as he watched Japans current group of Olympians fall on their collective faces.

Phelps is simply "the" story of these Olympics. Too bad the Japanese media missed the boat with extremely poor coverage of this monumental event. Congratulations to Phelps and the USA for it's unique culture that encourages top rate performances from it's people. Well done !
