The government can use the same standards on Japanese food exports that the government uses on food imports: i.e. Find one bad piece of beef? Ban all beef imports from that country. Find rat droppings in one bag of rice? Ban all rice imports from that country.

Find one batch of radioactive spinach? Ban all exports of spinach.

    Easy.

    sf2k,

What on earth are they afraid of now?

Supposedly an increase in the noise levels around Haneda.

But I think your comment "There's a power struggle under way" is correct but the power struggle is between Narita and Haneda. By allowing Haneda to open but not have any flights landing, Narita is given a couple years to boost... ground services?

We Japanese are all pulling together! (Except for people with possible radiation poisoning and/or debilitating diseases.)

    2020hingsight,

I agree. I wonder how much ridicule they got before they had to live in a gym with a couple of hundred other evacuees.

    Tatanka,

In Japan the 'younger' twin is the first born - the 'older' twin has graciously allowed his or her younger sibling to leave the womb first. I don't know if that's what JT is doing, though.

I liked her acting more than her singing but her singing got her into acting so, rest in peace, young lady.

A prime minister's days are numbered from the moment he takes office - there's a maximum of four years he can serve but he needs to be re-elected after two so there's an automatic renewal notice at two years. It would be nice if in this decade Japan manages to hold on to at least one prime minister for longer than a year.

I've said before, what difference does it make what lifetime Diet member is prime minister (except who to pay the kickbacks to)? Elect one for a ten-year term, install him in a nice mansion near Nagatacho and get on with the business of running the government. He can come out for ceremonial purposes, meeting heads of state, and compose poems during cherry blossom time.

Amongst all that rubble he managed to find a complete six-piece sofa set. Miracles do happen, eh?

And based on the cap, herefornow, it looks like he shopped at a cap store. But if he is a rescue worker/supervisor, yes, he deserves a break.

Yamamoto, was working in the electronic equipment industry at the time of the incident.

    Well, that explains everything, then.

    I like his hands.

I wonder how many children he has buried. Not pleasant to outlive your children, I'd think.

But still, he's lived in three centuries.

Like most internet-related applications, how Twitter is used is up to the person doing the tweeting. If it is for ego or vanity, it will be used as such. If it is for conveying vital and timely information, it will be used as such. I use twitter to keep my customers updated on discounts, relevant information or just to keep in touch - a marketing ploy, as it were.

During the March 11th earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent meltdown a lot of information was distributed quickly by both twitter and facebook; more quickly than CNN or NHK. Some information provided links and phone numbers.

On the other hand, who really cares if "I'm going to bed." is posted or not.

Tendo falls in with the wrong crowd,

Like law-abiding, born-again Christian computer geeks?

I mean, if she was born into the Yakuza, how can she fall in with the 'wrong' crowd? What is the 'wrong' crowd for the yakuza? Cops? Priests?

    Moderators,

Amami, in the leading role, plays a cool, canny and self-assured detective named Eriko Osawa, who, together with a team of other talented detectives, assigned to investigate violent crimes.

I believe this sentence needs either the be-verb before 'assigned' or everything from 'who' to 'detectives' needs to be deleted.

The director of this TV show is trying very hard to be 'hip' and 'cutting edge' but ends up, in my opinion, to be merely irritating.

For almost every expository scene the director zooms in and then zooms out. In... out... in...out. Ad nauseum. For some scenes he jump cuts from a medium shot of a character to a slightly less medium shot of the same sentence - often this jump cut comes in the middle of a sentence. Jarring.

The director must think this 'fancy' camera work heightens the tension. It doesn't. It distracts from the story. (Is the director trying to imitate the CSI series in the US?)

The reason we all enjoy the safe environment of Japan is that no drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroin etc are permitted here.

First, I agree that the highly addictive cocaine and heroin should not be legalized - although there is a medical use for heroin. But marijuana is not of the same ilk. It's not as addictive and I've yet to hear of marijuana users turn to violence as much as alcohol users.

An alcoholic friend was told by his doctor that perhaps he should switch to marijuana as it was less physically and mentally debilitating. Unfortunately, he loved the sauce and voila! (Thanks Monkeyz) died an alcoholic.

    Author is wrong here:

The most obvious reason is that cannabis, in all its forms, is illegal in Japan.

Agree with Zenny11 on this as I have a few shirts purchased in Japan that are made of hemp. The author seems to think hemp is hemp when in fact

    • Cannabis sativa L. subsp. is grown for industrial use, while

    • C. sativa subsp. indica is the stuff we smoke and bake into Alice B. Toklas brownies.

I'm not a lawyer but I think industrial hemp is not illegal in Japan, although, as the author states, getting a license to grow the non-brownie version of hemp is difficult to get.

    Frungy,

There's no way to prove that the bag of medical marijuana the person is holding is really medical marijuana or smuggled in

If the police catch someone who claims their marijuana is for medicinal purposes, the police need only ask for their prescription. If they don't have one, viola drug arrest.

I think when all the Christian leaders get together and decide on the details of what makes a Christian, then we can take them seriously. It appears that with this article - one man's 'Christian' is another man's 'heretic.'
