I'd like to see...
• reporting on a successful government program that has found homes for all the evacuees.
• a report on all the nations that have sent help - either material or manpower.

Posted in: Shoppers' appetite for spending is being restrained by a feeling that it is inappropriate when nearly 28,000 are dead or missing and more than 180,000 survivors huddle in shelters. What effect do you think this attitude will have on the economy this year and what is the best way to encourage people to start spending again?

I live far from ground zero and I see shortages of quite a lot of products. I suspect it is because either:
a) trucks can't get here - not true, we have the products, just reduced quantities or
b) they're sending the products to Tohoku for disaster relief or Tokyo for price gouging.
Maybe it's c) the factories that make the products are rationing their limited supplies.

kaptainkichigai,
Yeah, I think they're artists who are staging events in various countries to raise awareness of the tsunami disaster, togetherness, and (maybe) raise money for the evacuees.

The right reverend Jones should go to Kabul and explain why he did what he did. I'm sure all the religious people will understand and come together in spiritual brotherhood.

I agree with Cleo. Before the end of WWII, I doubt if any commoners would even look directly at the Showa emperor let alone sit Indian style in front of him.
I remember the empress going to an evacuation center in Kobe after the Hanshin earthquake and she really encouraged the evacuees just by being there. Maybe the emperor and empress should go to Sendai? Or, to prove how 'right' TEPCO is, Fukushima?

Last time I renewed my license the examiner (?) asked the crowd I was in "Who has the right of way at an intersection with no stop signs or signals?" and the correct answer was, "The car on the right." So, while we drive on the left, we've incorporated rules similar to the US.
On the other hand, even with signals, most drivers here seem to assume they are the only cars on the road and drive accordingly.

kokorocloud,
From the article:
It doesn't look like Japan had anything to do with Germany's decision to get off the nuclear wagon. Especially since Merkel has been chancellor for six years, not a decade or since 1986.
It seems they are breaking away quite nicely. Too bad they live next to and are - generally - downwind from France. Will other countries follow their lead? Should be interesting to watch.

In one TEPCO news conference I saw, the TEPCO people looked very bad: not answering questions, looking at each other, not looking at the reporters, avoiding solid answers.
Reporter: "What's happening?"
TEPCO: "We're very sorry for what's happening." (moshiwakearimasen)
Reporter: "We don't want that. We want to know what's happening."
I think TEPCO got better at answering questions after all the mucked-up hysteria in the foreign news, which was very drama queenish (as lead by head drama queen Anderson Cooper).

And from such technical splits come many a religious war.
The point being, halal and kosher are, while similar, not the same. Much like I can throw a basketball at a hoop just like Micheal Jordan can; except, well, not exactly.

JeffLee,
There are many differences between halal and kosher in just the slaughter of the animal.
• In Islam, if the butcher stops cutting but continues, the meat is still halal. In Judaism, if the butcher stops, the meat is no longer kosher.
• In Islam, any sane man or woman can be a butcher; in Judaism, only a properly trained rabbi (a Sachet) can be a butcher.
• In Islam, the name of God is chanted before each animal is killed; in Judaism, the name of God is chanted only before the first and last animal.
And that's just some of the differences in the slaughter of animals. We won't get into the parts of the animal that are halal or kosher. But basically, Zenny11 is correct: kosher and halal are not the same.
