As much as each generation would like to claim that the younger generation has or lacks ambition, what this article is giving as 'proof' is anecdotal. I'd like to see more evidence that a) the younger generation is ambitious and b) they are being thwarted by the current economic situation.

Also, the older (30s? 40s?) generation's idea that success was measured by the amount of stuff they could buy is sad. They should measure it in terms of how happy they and their families are because they can spend time together. (But maybe their families - including the younger generation - are happiest when the breadwinner brings home a new toy (stereo, car, house).

Interesting article, just needs more facts or something.

we sure as hell don’t want a desecrating mosque built near the site where your Muslim brothers slaughtered 3000 Americans...

But a strip joint is okay? (The strip joint is closer to Ground Zero than this mosque will be.) How about a monument to Robert E. Lee at Gettsyburg - where his Southern brethren slaughtered tens of 1000s of patriotic Americans?

A sensible discussion and more at http://www.uscatholic.org/blog/2010/08/productive-dialogue-possible-around-ground-zero

but she is easy on the eyes.

I beg to differ. Her blank-stare eyes really creep me out. And when she attempts a smile: can you spell fake? Yet people pay her 100,000s of dollars to attend their parties/events.

Word of warning to all JT posters: if you're ever in a car or on a boat with Paris Hilton, expect to be blamed for carrying the drugs. Daddy will compensate later, of course.

At least Tokoro has learned how to put his glasses over his eyes rather than on his forehead. Must be part of the retro look.

One can both read books (that will be around in 100 years, maybe) or ebooks. It isn't an either/or situation. Personally, I'd rather have all my textbooks on an iPad and all my pleasure reading in 'real' books.

Long ago I saw a strawberry and two slices of tangerine wrapped in a slice of fatty ham with whipped cream surrounding the whole thing on a hot dog bun with that red sliced pickle stuff sprinkled on top. Went well with green tea.

I think there should be a driving test for people who wear make-up and/or own a cell phone. The driving test for people with cell phones should take at least one hour. Just drive for an hour and if the person touches the cell phone: Fail! For make-up wearers, the test should be in two parts: standing outside regardless of the weather for 10 minutes, then driving for 50. One glance at their eyelashes: Fail!

The last major passenger jet crash in China was in November 2004

I guess their economy is going down, too, then because they've only had one major air crash in 6 years? Bummmer.

One thing that will cause Mr. Fujii plenty of jail time is that Masaya Sato was:

    •Keio University professor emeritus,

    •the president of Seisa University,

•and son of novelist Haruo Sato.

If Mr. Sato was Average Mr. Sato, retired salariman, Fujii would probably get a suspended sentence with a few "I'm sorries," an envelope of money, a few tears, and a low bow. Now, however, he's up sh$t creek without a paddle.

Taiji residents also carry their history in their last names,

Many residents all over the world carry their history in their last names. But I don't think Margaret Thatcher ever climbed up on a roof. I often find this kind of statement in student debates and I always have to ask what is the relevance.

We have a strong sense of pride about this

This is what the argument is all about. They're proud of their dolphin slaughter.

While dolphins can be playmates, they are primarily seen as big game animals, a perception many foreigners find difficult to stomach.

To lump everyone who was not born in Japan as of one mind does a disservice to everyone; I'm sure some people in other countries enjoy eating dolphin and some Japanese may be turned off by the idea.

the American electorate needs to be better informed

This blog rant should have stopped here. If you read the comments on sites about US politics, economics, and science you will run across a huge section of US society who can't put together a coherent sentence, who can't spell, who can't find the CAPS key, who confuses innuendo and rumor with fact, who has abandoned logic for emotion, who replaces thought with name-calling, and who equates religion with science.

Plus, as many others have pointed out, his 'facts' are not. For example, if he thinks China has turned away from socialism, wait until Chinese leaders decide 'Western decadence' has gone too far and, bam, the doors to China will snap shut so fast his head will spin.
