Do y'all think TEPCO reads JT? Sarcasm at my own expense; sorry for the confusion. Though, it could explain a few things...

"We cannot give you details of his illness because they are private matters,"

Sorry, not anymore. Since he's been working hard at the damaged plant for nearly nine months and everyone in Japan is concerned about radiation to some degree, his illness needs to be public. If it's not related to radiation, tell us. If it is related to radiation, tell us. Also, get well soon from your unspecified disease.

And I know this might be impossible for TEPCO, but Get Your Message Straight! Mixed messages imply you don't know what's going on (worst case scenario) or you're lying jerks (best case scenario). And, yes, I know TEPCO regularly monitors JapanToday for advice. You're welcome, Big T.

The 12% of the women who have a boyfriend are not dating someone in the 'proper' age group. i.e. If she's 34 and her boyfriend is 35, he's not in the 'proper' age group (as defined by the government, of course.) Also, if she's 18 and dating a classmate who happens to be 17, they are not counted.

While this applies to the men, too, obviously they are dating less or not at all; not all of them are gay. What is the percent of gay humans in the world 5%?

I can see getting angry enough to slap or hit a four-year-old child once (I can see it but I would never condone it) but I can't believe anyone short of Stalin, Pol Pot, or that Texas judge would beat a child for eight or nine hours.

And she has a younger child? I hope just this once the court throws her in jail for a decade and sends her younger child to live with a relative. Give her ten years to think about what she did. Not that the Japanese courts will ever do that, of course. Just wishful thinking.

I guess the actual cost of a nuclear power plant is a tad bit higher than previously reported. Especially for farmers who live in the area and can no longer sell their produce.

Also, in the Hokuriku area (home of about 50% of Japan's nuclear arsenal), a mayor was asked what is the city's plan if the nearby nuclear power plant melted down like Fukushima's did and his measured response was, "I don't know."

I suspect rice from this area will show up next to the whale meat in school lunches across this great safety island country of ours. Possibly during the unique four seasons we enjoy.

    globalwatcher,

    Thanks for the specifics.

fire, hire and lead the senior management team and set up corporate culture

Then, shouldn't the Olympus board quit en masse? Or at least, shouldn't the shareholders vote them out and vote in a whole new board, one that can deal with such ethical problems as lying to the shareholders?

About this case, I have a question for you business types out there. In other countries, the US to be specific, what exactly is the board of directors supposed to do? Do they just sit around and nod when the majority stockholder speaks or do they have an oversight responsibility? Are boards of directors made up of major stockholders or friends of the company?

What, in other words, are the responsibilities of boards of directors?

    naruhodo1,

and from what i hear, 20 years ago was much much worse)

So, 20 years ago, was this sort of crime more prevalent or less prevalent? The connection between violent (fill in recreational activity here - comics, video games, movies, music) and violence in real life is rock solid, is it?

    Utrack,

Bars are known to have knives in their 'kitchen'.

I wonder why the old man snapped and why he isn't being named here. I hope 'I was drunk' is not going to be his excuse. Feel sorry for Kinoshita and her family.

As much as I realize the mother is grief-stricken, when will parents learn that there's a reason toddlers should be supervised at all times? I feel sorry for the mother, father, and any siblings this boy may have had but it could have been prevented.

Given all that Shinhiyata has written, this movie is going to have Watanabe jumping from one disaster to the next in filmic rapid progression. Lots of computer face time. Lots of tense staring at big screens waiting for Hayabusa to react. And the chase to find the capsule after it finally crashes down on earth? Classic drama.

Apollo 11 was a disaster, too, but one heck of a movie. However, with human lives at stake. I wonder, will Watanabe cry at the end of the movie?

That's collusion and illegal, even in Japan, isn't it?

Plus, I was all excited to go to London this New Year's until I got to the surcharges. Prices are half of last year, surcharges are double; airlines gouge again. And this is news? I don't think so.

    Virtuoso,

You might be right but I only saw city officials bowing and scraping, not police officers. Maybe later the police apologized but I definitely remember them saying things like "the case is ongoing." I hope they apologized before Mrs. Kono died. Thanks for the update.

where only negative behaviour is recognised verbally

Taught three kids in one family once and they were incredibly obnoxious and unmanageable. Then I saw the interaction between the parents (esp. the father) and the kids. ONLY negative behavior was addressed. Therefore, to get attention All the kids behaved badly. I complimented one kid in class and he was dumbstruck as to how to react; encouragement never happened to him before.

I also think Makoto is putting a lot of blame on her parents and then extrapolating her experience out to the rest of Japan. I've met many parents who are the opposite of hers. What is generally the case? Hard to say, but I feel it's changing toward more displays of affection.

Pretty swift justice, eh? I mean, only 16 years where some of their victims have lived in agony for that long. I remember one poor woman in her 20s whose contact lenses were fused to her eyeballs and the only solution was to remover her eyes. In Japan, what support can she find?

    Also,

Sarin, which Saddam Hussein deployed against the Kurds in northern Iraq, was also used in an attack by the cult on the city of Matsumoto in central Japan the year earlier. Eight people died.

What connection does Hussein have to do with Matsumoto (other than the sarin connection)?

In Matsumoto, Yoshiyuki Kono's survived in a coma for 14 years. Of course, the police accused her husband and never apologized for their fact-free accusation.

Even the fact that the schools need radiation monitors seems to me to be reason enough to move to another prefecture. Preferably one upwind and over mountains.

(On the other hand, my school did have hall monitors.)

I hope he gets well, too. And not that I don't trust the IHA as far as I can throw it, but when Showa Tenno was in the hospital, the IHA kept saying "He's resting well." "He's alert." Almost until the day he died. I hope this isn't the case this time.
